Hopefully if the other cable companies join with Direct TV, Viacom will get the message and make their channels more watchable. First step would be totally removing off the clock programming.

I don’t understand this. Is Directv getting rid of the channels?

It looks like one of those payment disputes between carrier and provider (I don't have the ratings, but those channels named look like some of the more popular cable nets).

I had it here recently between Spectrum and Tribune, where the Trib networks were pulled and part of Spectrums argument was no one cared about networks like AntennaTV and WGN America.

Eventually they come to a deal, restore the channels, and the carrier raises your rates

I don’t watch any Viacom channel. And last time I checked, didn’t they have the lowest rated cable/satellite network for a while (MTV Classic)?

Viacom’s off-the-clock programming is so bad. They should do away with that altogether and seriously revamp most or all of their channels. I agree with DirecTV, and the facts show, Viacom’s channels are losing viewers by the month, by the year. Viacom has no one to blame by themselves.

Comcast ditched CMT to a higher priced tier. I wouldn't mind losing all of them if they lowered the prices.

I lost logo 2 weeks when I downgraded my cable. That was the only channel I was watching on sunday night

As of this moroning, I still have Logo so apparently they reached some agreement, which means my bill will probably be higher next month.

May I ask - Why do people here keep DirecTV? How much do you pay per month?

Channels like Logo can be found in less expensive providers like Philo's $20/month package. Then use an antenna for the local channels. Even Dish Network's Dish Plex is pretty good. It doesn't include Logo and Animal Planet though, but still a good value. I have Fios but I know it's limited in availability.

One issue we face is that we double pay for programming. DirecTV is owned by AT&T that owns TBS. It pays for Friends rights - I believe afternoon rights. Paramount and Nick, owned by Viacom, is paying for Friends as well, for the evening rights.

I mean Friends was a great show, but it doesn't warrant so much coverage that we as customers end up paying in a way twice. (and some of us with Netflix indirectly pay another way as Netflix feels it's important to keep it). Meanwhile the six actors of the show reap huge royalties from all these multiple types of coverage, while the typical customer has continued increases in monthly charges.

I live so far in the sticks an antenna wouldn’t pick anything up...I know, I’ve tried twice. I pay a little over $60 a month and I have the lowest package possible. I also don’t have internet in my home; I just use my phone for my internet needs.

I think most cable channels are no longer popular and getting even less popular each day.Even the big networks have become almost (although I don't like the following word): irrelevant now.And in Viacoms case I think channels like Antenna and MeTV are putting Viacom and their commercials out of business.

I don’t have DirecTV, but this utter BS. They’re just looking for something to blame. There’s plenty of channels on their service that are not popular, and they’re singling them out? Gimme a break! I’m sure it has something to do with Viacom wanting to raise their rates and Directv is just being stubborn. Screw them for making decisions for their customers and removing these channels. If I need to pay extra for channels I want to see, them I’ll do it. Don’t try to make excuses that they’re not popular anymore or inject your opinion as the basis for your decision, which aren’t true. Frankly I’m tired of these disputes and ultimatums that cable and satellite services pull. This is why I don’t even have cable or satellite.

^^^I’ve stated many times before, the only current shows I watch are “Days of our Lives”, “Wheel of Fortune”, & “The Cool Kids”. I also watched “The Masked Singer” and will watch season 2 when it starts. Other than that I don’t watch any new shows; I mostly watch Logo for reruns. I also do watch several Judge shows. I could easily adjust to not having Directv. I could just watch “Days” on the NBC app...that’s the only show I REALLY don’t want to miss. I may eliminate Directv next year but I don’t want to do it now because my dad wouldn’t have anything to watch; next year I’m going to have to put him in a nursing home.

Viacom is a corporation that only wants our hard-earned money!

12 years ago, they got on YouTube's case for showing Viacom-owned shows...now we must either pay premium or get AdBlocker...otherwise...you're forced to watch a 5-15 second commercial!

And to watch Viacom and Paramount shows...you need to pay a little more...I'm not against into making money...many stations do that...but when the older shows or the shows that are different are removed...that's where we have a problem!

When Viacom bought MTV, they made it to the point where music videos were gone! I grew-up hearing that MTV had music and TV Shows...it helped MTV, but it wasn't enough for Viacom...they soon removed music videos on MTV!

Viacom must die!

Not talking about Comcast. Was asking about (what people pay for/why keep) DirecTV, which is not cable, but delivered through satellite, which is typically harder to get in an apartment complex. For some people, it's the NFL Sunday Ticket, and others is not using high speed internet for streaming and lack of over the air signal or good cable.

When I look up at DirecTV's prices for new customers, it shows as $81/month for DirecTV Select for months 13-24. To me that is very high and I don't think Logo channel is even in that package.

I pay a little over $60 a month for the “Family Standard” pack with HD access and DVR service. That package isn’t offered to everyone, they only offer it in special circumstances and situations. I’ve been with the company even before they formed. I had Primestar in 1999 and that was bought out by Directv so I’ve basically been with them since their inception...that’s why they offer me what the do. And, yes, Logo is in my package.

When I pick a company, I usually stay with it for life...

Had Primestar/Directv since 1999
Had same gas company since 1991
Had same car insurance company since 1985
Use the same furniture/appliance store since 1991

I was saying that most people are stuck with comcast because they live in a apt building or in a area that only has comcast. I always wanted Directv because of the sunday ticket but had to settle for the Redzone with Comcast:(

Viacom did same thing to Spectrum couple months ago Viacom is wanting more money for their channels and Spectrum move few of their channels to different trier package. those channels may go dark for awhile then once Directv and Viacom reach a deal then the channels be restore and Directv may move couple their channels to a higher price package.

I highly recommend Adblock Plus. Since I installed it last year, 100% of YouTube ads have been blocked. It is a free download for your computer.

TMC

Simply put, Viacom really overvalues their channels. I don't have time to go through all of what I would say are piss-poor decisions on their part, but it's amazing Viacom is constantly in price wars with providers. They want so much money even though their product is more or less, crap.

Take for instance, MTV. They have doubled down on reality TV (which is debatable regarding whether or not they still corner the market in that category), cancelled anything interesting that's scripted, there is nothing to do with music other than Video Music Awards, which are now only for the sake of tradition. And MTV2 is more or less a non-stop loop of Ridiculousness.

I don't know how true this is, but supposedly, if MTV, CMT and VH1 were to go back to playing music videos today then they would have to confront the recording label disputes issues with artists, songwriters and touring staff and getting run over by Youtube, Vevo, spotify, Apple Music, Google Music over their audience size for certain concerts. In fact, it was MTV and CMT that created the first online players for music videos on their sites. That was partly why they stopped playing videos on their channels. This was before YouTube, Vevo, or any of those other services. MTV and CMT created this whole idea of on-demand viewing of music videos. And then other companies came along and beat them at their own game. Also during the time CMT, VH1 and MTV were attempting to make an online player for music videos was this killed off due to Sumner Redstone splitting CBS from Viacom.

Either way, MTV is at this point, living off of the name only. It's a legacy brand even if the brand itself is lost.
