Olyphant says he was reluctant because he couldn't tell if the Deadwood movie was going to be like a high school reunion, which would be fun, or like repeating your sophomore year. "My mindset was, 'Sh*t. I guess I’m going to have to make some kind of decision here,'" Olyphant tells TVLine of finally agreeing to return for the Deadwood movie. "It was a very curious process. I did not expect to be in the position to actually have to make a decision; I just assumed it would go away. It’s a curious (thing) deciding on whether to do a job when all of your old friends have already committed to it and you kind of think, 'Well, I’ve never been in a position to be such an a**hole.' But it was (ultimately) a really wonderful process with David Milch and (director) Dan Minahan and (HBO)’s Carolyn Strauss. I had a lot of conversations with them. The whole process was quite rewarding."

McShane calls the Atlanta episode showcasing Brian Tyree Henry a "half an hour of pure delight" on the My Favorite Episode with Michael Schneider podcast. “You never know what’s coming next," he says. "It’s a very fabulously entertaining show. I picked that one because he just made me laugh continuously.” McShane also talked about the upcoming Deadwood movie, noting that Al Swearengen is "not exactly what he used to be" in the film, set 10 years after the series finale, due to all the drinking. “It’s a love letter to the old Deadwood,” he says. “I think they found the connecting tissue by making it statehood day. There’s a reason a lot of the characters come back.”

“The show was canceled so abruptly and everybody was so traumatized that nobody bothered to save them,” said Maria Caso, the production designer on the HBO TV series and the film. Caso and her team carefully watched old episodes frame by frame to reproduce the old Deadwood set. “We watched the show over and over to try to remember what we had built,” she said, adding: "The audience, they check on everything. So we did a lot of research before we started drawing or building. We really wanted to recreate as many of the details as we could, just so it’s true to history, and to honor that.”
