View Full Version : Do you think Jack's Bistro should have been eliminated once the Three's a Crowd era

I mean if Jack was around all new characters and none of the TC characters was added to the show like Felipe or Larry, why still have Jack's Bistro on the show. Couldn't they have jack open a new restaurant in the beginning so that it would be no more links to Three's Company??
Heenan Fan 03-18-2019, 12:08 AM Jack's Bistro made both versions of the show look poor. The set was bad and Jack and EZ ran the whole restraunt by themselves. Just beyond stupid.

Definitely not. There were many hilarious scenes in Jack's Bistro. In fact the carryover effect only peaked interest in TC fans because because there's still a connection to the old show.
At least it did for me. But nothing could've saved this show. It was never going to live up to TC. I thought it was fine but John obviously wasn't satisfied. I'm shocked he was offered 13 more episodes but turned it down! omg:

Yes the Angelino restaurant looked a lot better than Jack's bistro lol Even the reagle beagle lol

Didnt he something like......"i;m at the age now where I don;t play this type of games and if you are not offering a full season then I will move on"
Am I correct?

I never heard that quote but maybe he said it?? You should other knowledgeable TC fans.
Why I'm shocked John turned it down is because he was suddenly unemployed. Turning down 13 episodes is flushing $650,000 down the toilet! That's assuming he still made $50,000 an episode but maybe it was even more by now? All the more reason not to quit!
I know John already had millions but the Hollywood/rich/famous lifestyle can be very expensive. He never knew what type of financial problem may come up in the future so TAKE the $650,000 already!!

True, I am thinking I heard him mention that on the THS of TC and may have to watch it again. But maybe he felt like he was well established enough as a actor at that time to not accept a half of season commitment. Like with me, I feel like at this point of my life I don't have to accept a part-time job because of the people who I met and built relationships with over the years and all my experience. So maybe John was like I am going to be fine and preferred a full season or he is moving on. Now of course if you are young and just starting out a 13 episode offer sounds pretty good lol
SitcomsHeydayfan 03-18-2019, 01:17 AM I saw the E! True Hollywood Story of TC but I don't recall him saying that but maybe I missed it.
I saw it like 20 years ago!
Heenan Fan 03-18-2019, 01:24 AM I always heard that the real reason TAC was canceled was because ABC acquired Different Strokes from NBC, so ABC needed to cancel a show and TAC was it. I'm not saying it's true, just what I've always heard. Anybody know for sure?

Just watched it and he said this
"we were on the fence, the show was picked up, then it was not picked up, then I think it was picked up for like 13 shows".
But he didn't say what I thought he said, I think that was another actor lol

Yes that was the reason, just watched it. TAC finished #38 after the 1st season and they decided to have different strokes instead of giving TAC another season so it was cancelled
Heenan Fan 03-18-2019, 02:02 AM The irony was that last season of DS was pretty bad, and was canceled. I love TC and John Ritter, but TAC was garbage, mostly due to bad writing. Like the way Jack reacted to Larry on TAC. They acted like they haven't seen each other in years, despite the fact they lived 2 miles away from each other!! Horrible writing.

Just found that episode and it did air almost 2 years after TC ended. So maybe that's why he was so happy to see him.. Jack just mentioned he had not seen Larry in a year
AMackII 03-18-2019, 04:55 AM I hope not. Jack’s Bistro would get more screen time with a bit improvance just in case.

But that's totally understandable because that's the very first appearance Larry made on this new show. So Jack's reaction was done for US, the audience, since that's the 1st time we saw Larry on TAC.

They actually said TAC was axed due to Different Strokes on the E! True Hollywood Story on TC??
What about the 13 more episodes John was offered?

So why didn't he take those 13 more episodes of TAC?? That's an extra half million plus in ADDITION to the rest of the cast & crew getting paid!

he said that was offered 13 eps but then the show was cancelled. So he was going to do it but ABC decided to added different strokes to the schedule for the 85-86 tv season. So basically he was saying they were on the fence of whether or not the show would be picked up or not after season 1.

Well, then Jack and Larry must not of enjoyed each other's company (no pun intended) because they still lived in the same neighborhood and couldn't be bothered to visit each other for over a year!
TVFactFan 03-18-2019, 07:40 PM When Larry appeared on the Ropers the audience didn't cheer at all LOL
Like they didn't know who he was
Mr. Television 03-18-2019, 08:09 PM Larry should have been a regular. Big mistake there. The problem with the Bistro was it was close to where the apartment was located. If everyone was still in the same town (except Teri) you would think they would visit him.

Janet was out of the area and Larry and Jack was 2 hours away from where larry was living. The episode Larry appeared in he stated that he had to move from Bakersfield, CA due to losing his business. Jack and Vicky was still in Santa Monica

Larry and Felipe both should've been regulars in TAC! It would've greatly improved the show!
JackJanetChrissy 03-20-2019, 09:55 AM Jack's Bistro was a carryover from the original British sitcom Robin's Nest. Robin (British Jack Tripper) got the restaurant in the first episode of his spinoff, so it was totally different from Man About the House.
The American producers talked about spinning John Ritter off into his own show like they did with the British show starting in Season 7 of Three's Company. But TC kept running so they kept Jack's Bistro around and then continued it into TAC.
I think the bistro was the least of TAC's problems.

I have to check but wasn't the upstairs of the Bistro a lot different on TC than it was on TAC? As a matter of fact on TC it was said that there was only a room above the Bistro not an actual apt so that was a huge inconsistency lol

Yeah, I remember Jack telling Janet & Terri that he spent the night in a room above the restaurant. But maybe there was also an apartment that may have been rented out?
That small bedroom certainly didn't take up the entire 2nd floor so it's a possibility that Angelino rented out an apartment on the 2nd floor. Remember Angelino wanted to squeeze every penny he could've out of that building!

That was the episode he was in the back room with the girl who looked like chrissy lol

What's even weirder is that the actress in that episode, Ilene Graff, looked exactly like the original Chrissy in the very first Three's Company pilot, played by Susanne Zenor.
rusty spike 08-25-2020, 04:27 AM I disliked the bistro. I think the writers really blew it on this premise. Here they have Jack Tripper studying to be a chef in a renowned culinary school. They showed him to be passionate about cooking and bringing meals to life and then all of sudden his life-long
dream was to open a restaurant?
To me that's like a person studying medicine to help/cure others and then deciding he/she wants to manage a hospital. Huh?
And I agree that it was never convincing in TC and even less in TAC that Jack could properly run a restaurant with a couple of idiots. They should have returned Jack to his passion for cooking rather than managing a bistro.

Yeah because his original dream was to be a chef not a restaurant owner. And then he was cooking in his own restaurant
biffbronson 08-26-2020, 05:01 AM I guess the thing was, though, that a chef works pretty much in private. Jack having the restaurant opened up more options for the series' writers. And the incompetent workers offered up more jokes. I think you could say that sitcoms don't need to make as much sense as dramas.
Robert Mandan was almost too good as the potential father-in-law. Someone like that would scare me off in a big way... :(
