View Full Version : Move over Tootie, there's a new catchphrase in town!
'80sSitcoms 03-15-2019, 10:44 AM From the "Trivia" section on John Lawlor over at IMDB:
In a 1980s TV commercial for Malt-O-Meal hot cereal, he played the dad telling his son's invisible friend that Malt-O-Meal was, "Good stuff, Maynard!" -- a line which became a popular phrase still used today.
 I say we bring this "popular phrase" back, guys!
DJM77 03-15-2019, 11:44 AM Ha! One time last year I heard my 63 year old uncle say that and I had to ask him where it was from.
'80sSitcoms 03-15-2019, 12:09 PM Ha! One time last year I heard my 63 year old uncle say that and I had to ask him where it was from.
Haha, that's awesome.
So it was by someone used once in 2018, let's go for at least twice in 2019!
'80sSitcoms 03-15-2019, 12:14 PM After some searching (there were surprisingly several Malt-O-Meal commercials over the years [I'd never heard of it, that I recall] ), I found it!
From Mr. Bradley to Mr. Malt-O-Meal, lol...1981:

And DJM77, you weren't the only one to witness that from family, lol---these are a couple of comments from a different Malt-O-Meal video  : I am totally gonna start using this!

Cool! I remember rushing to YouTube in search of the commercial probably about 10 minutes after my uncle explained it to me.

Haha, cool.
DJM77 after his uncle said it: "Who's 'Maynard'? "

Right. The only Maynards that I knew about until then were Maynard from Tool and A Perfect Circle and Maynard from The Many Loves Of Dobie Gillis.
'80sSitcoms 03-15-2019, 03:06 PM I was Googling around, and apparently it's allegedly a myth that this catchphrase originated on "Dobie Gills" (I've never seen the show).
The only Maynard I know of is a hillbilly crow puppet on Chicago native Bill Jackson's Chicago kids' puppet show "Gigglesnort Hotel".

I've been watching that show some lately. I'll have to let you know if I ever hear the catchphrase used there.

That sounds like high quality entertainment.

Cool. Someone online insists it's never said there.
That sounds like high quality entertainment.
Haha, it's a hoot! You should check out some clips on YouTube!
Bill runs the Gigglesnort Hotel, and here he is with "Dirty Dragon", the maintenance worker who lives down in the boiler room, lol: (and there's a character called "Blob" who's a male face on a big ol' hunk o' clay, and he can only speak in guffaws and grunts and groans and whimpers, and apparently some kids found him traumatizing, lol)

I wonder who the lucky lady is
RetroGuy2000 03-15-2019, 08:48 PM So that's where that phrase came from! I never knew! And it was originated by Mr. Bradley the whole time!
I wonder who the lucky lady is
I think it was Miss Mahoney. Her rabbits got in trouble, and she quickly had to leave Eastland. Mr. Bradley soon followed. A few years later, they were having problems with their son not eating his Malt-O Meal!

It's the only thing that makes sense. Why else would she just... vanish without a trace? This was during the middle of the school year! You know something serious has happened when a teacher disappears partway through the school year!
'80sSitcoms 03-15-2019, 10:23 PM I believe she still taught at Eastland for years! She just got busier with more and more rabbits!

That's a pretty good alternate theory. But wouldn't we still see her occasionally, running through the halls of Eastland with a harried look?

Haha yeah, she was too busy to make dorm calls after IQ

Nope, not when the main sets are a dorm and a cafeteria. ;)

She probably sticks to her classroom and the teachers lounge.
