View Full Version : "The Facts of Life" cast/crew social media posts

Most of "our girls" from FOL, along with others from the show, are on social media. So I thought it'd be nice to have one collective place to share "Facts"-centric posts from cast and crew. :) (and even non-"Facts" posts from the gang, if you think they're interesting/touching/fun, etc.)

Here is one I just saw tonight from Nancy McKeon. How touching is this? I developed a whole new respect for Nancy when I discovered from her recent podcast how down to earth she is. And posts like this only reflect that.

(also, I saw while skimming the comments that Kim Fields chimed in---I pasted her comment in the bottom right)

Okay, so Eddie Brennan may not have many fans here (and he doesn't, lol), but this is pretty cool of Nancy to give the actor, Clark Brandon, a shout-out. Wow, I never realized before how she was new to comedy, new to the sitcom format, and new to exploring a relationship-heavy story line, all at the same time! Props to her, indeed!

But she was only 14 and he was in his 20s?? Eeewwwww!

(Also: three point deduction for spelling "birthdays" with an apostrophe. Mr. Gideon would be outraged at Jo's grammar! You check the spelling, and then you double-check! Then you check again!)

Although, to be fair, he wasn't her English teacher, lol. But yeah, I'm sure if he saw that would've corrected her. "It's bad enough you destroyed my career saying I was doing cocaine. But did you have to I was a party celebrating some friends' 'birthday's' ???"

The straw that broke the camel's back wasn't the utter destruction of his Eastland career; it was that she typed "birthday's" instead of "birthdays"!

This is so cool!! A "trifecta" of '80s sitcoms! (hey wait, that's me! ha!)

Kim Fields of "The Facts of Life", Anna Maria Horsford of "Amen", and Jackee Harry of "227"! All on the same stage! Wow! And with that red curtain, it looks like they're on "The Muppet Show"!

3 ladies who were on shows I watched every Saturday night as a TV-loving little boy in the late '80s---this is so cool!!

Well Mrs. Garrett's not there. It's when the girls make their break to scatter in Paris, when that stoic woman is giving that tour to all the girls, and they look way up high at the structure. Now, it could Notre Dame, I just don't think that it was. I wanna say I'm certain that it's not this famed facade of it, at least. Perhaps it could be a different side, but I really don't think it's Notre Dame.

Wait, how do you not have an account? That's not what that screencap seems to say. ;) After all, it has the "Follow" option in that pic, hmmmm ;) Unless that's a screencap from Lorsie's account that you grabbed, in which case, that would all make sense, lol.

Lorsie asked me in a thread somewhere last year if I had social media. I didn't get into Instagram until January, and now I'm hooked! :D

I just clicked on the link Lorimar provided, and grabbed a screen capture.

Well what's strange is your screen capture says "Follow", indicating that account does NOT follow Julie Pie, but NOW when you click on the Lorsie's link, it says "Following", so now they ARE following her. So it seems like Lorsie didn't provide a link showing Instagram under his account, since that account was not "following" at that time.

You raise a good point, and it's one reason I never liked the term "first season girls", though some people use that term: eleven of their episodes, or almost half of their appearances, were after Season One. That name reduces them to something less than they were: an important part of four or five seasons of the show, and an integral part of the classic Eastland Years, despite their odd, still-unexplained absence in Season Four.

Interesting when you put it like that, though Sue Ann and Cindy are physically in 4 post s1 eps while Nancy is in 6.

But they were "first season girls". That's how they're known to the general public; they don't know or remember that the girls showed up any time after that. They were "Lost Girls" because they became lost from the cast after season 1 (gone from the opening credits, no longer series regulars), just wandering in a few more times (except Nancy, who showed up a handful of times). Even though they still showed up a bit, they got "lost" when the producers nixed them from the premise.

Eleven of their episodes, or almost half of their appearances, were after Season One.

I think you need to follow "F.A.C.T.", Mr. Littlefield. ;)

That name reduces them to something less than they were: an important part of four or five seasons of the show, and an integral part of the classic Eastland Years, despite their odd, still-unexplained absence in Season Four.

"Important" for 4 or 5 seasons sounds like quite a wishful stretch. It doesn't seem they were important beyond season 1, otherwise they would have been a part of the show (indeed, Cindy and Sue Ann are not even addressed by name in the scripts, which to me is insulting and disrespectful). Are they beloved to seasons 1 fans? Many, yes, but I think being truly important should warrant many more appearances, like at least 10 each per season, where you couldn't really have the show without them, or the show's structure as it had been retooled to just wouldn't be the same.

Sue Ann and Cindy are physically in 4 post s1 eps while Nancy is in 6.

Exactly, they're just there those few times, while Nancy shows up a couple times more. That's it.

They were barely there in the cafeteria years overall considering there were over 60 episodes in the cafeteria, but to fans like me who were watching them in 5-day-a-week broadcasting in summer re-runs as a child, it sure felt like they were around more. I always thought it was just a nice "homage" to let them appear the few times that they did (though as a young tot I didn't know that word, lol).

I do love s1, I just wish people would acknowledge more that the lost girls still appear post s1

But they did so only minimally (at the best of producers/writers, not the girls). That might be why Julie didn't include any screencaps like that; people don't "know her" from that era of the show. Sure, WE do, but most don't. Sadly, they didn't have the Lost Girls except Nancy contribute much at all in that era. Even Nancy didn't have much to with any plot after her first appearance in"Gossip", except arguably being the reason Tootie got the lead in "South Pacific" (not counting TLC, since that's so much later and and after more re-tools).

I think you need to follow "F.A.C.T.", Mr. Littlefield. ;)

True: they only appeared in ten episodes after Season One, counting the flashback episodes. Still, ten episodes, plus the 13 episodes they starred in, plus the backdoor pilot and the crossover episode on DS, means the Lost Girls appeared in 25 episodes, across many years of the show and its parent series.

"Important" for 4 or 5 seasons sounds like quite a wishful stretch. I didn't say integral, I said important. Without "Gossip", "Sex Symbol", "Pretty Babies", "The New Girl, Part 2", "Dear Me", "Green-Eyed Monster", "Front Page", and "The Little Chill", Seasons 2, 3, and 8 would be full of holes. Sue Ann is mentioned as late as the 2001 movie. Even when they weren't there, they were present in some form, as beloved memories.

But they did so only minimally (at the best of producers/writers, not the girls). That might be why Julie didn't include any screencaps like that; people don't "know her" from that era of the show. Without Sue Ann and Cindy, who would have spread the gossip in "Gossip"? Without Nancy, who would have freaked out about Blair seeing Roger? Without Cindy and Sue Ann, who would have admired Jo's newspaper article about Mr. Gideon? Without Nancy, who would Blair have cattily competed with in Johnathan Dutton's model search? Without Sue Ann, who would have lied to Jo about being a big wig VP? Without Nancy, who would Roger have impregnated? Without Cindy, who would have slut-shamed Natalie? Without Molly, who would have said "Lay off, Margo" and talked about string beans?

These roles were often not large, but they played an important role in continuity after Season One, demonstrating that there were more than just four girls attending Eastland. When those roles petered out into nothing, something was lost, and Season Four doesn't have nearly the amount of charm or the detailed continuity of previous seasons. Yes, I do think their roles were important, as Seasons 2 and 3 have better attention to detail, and a better connection to the original premise, than Season 4.

Oohhh, you're counting the flashbacks, which is how you upped their count. You can't count those. :nonono: That's "cheating" in your favor, lol. That's not them "appearing" on those particular shows, like showing up to the set and being there with the other actors. They are only shown in clips from previous shows, so they are "seen" in them, in repeated material, but they didn't "appear" in them. So they truly "appeared" in, like Lorsie said, 4 and 6 episodes after season 1, respectively. I have never before met anyone who counts flashbacks as continuing "appearances".

I didn't say integral, I said important.

You said both.

Nancy aside in "Gossip", and arguably Molly in TNGP2, any girls could have played those little "walk-on" parts. Most of those appearances weren't tailored to the characters. In fact, they never even said the Julies' characters' names.

Without Nancy, who would have freaked out about Blair seeing Roger?

Without Sue Ann, who would have lied to Jo about being a big wig VP? Without Nancy, who would Roger have impregnated?

Without Sue Ann and Cindy, who would have spread the gossip in "Gossip"?

Other girls.

Without Cindy and Sue Ann, who would have admired Jo's newspaper article about Mr. Gideon?

Other girls.

Without Nancy, who would Blair have cattily competed with in Johnathan Dutton's model search?

Other girls.

Without Cindy, who would have slut-shamed Natalie?

Other girls.

Without Molly, who would have said "Lay off, Margo" and talked about string beans?

Again, other girls.

I'll give you the Nancy and Roger ones, lol.

Yes, but it feels like you're reaching for them to be more important to the show than they actually were after season 1. I see where you're coming from, and I love them dearly, but being objective, they're just not important after that first season; but beloved, and organic, yes.

But I know you feel otherwise, so like other occasions with you and me, and you and Christopher, and me and Christopher, and you and me and Christopher, lol, we will agree to disagree.

Oohhh, you're counting the flashbacks, which is how you upped their count. You can't count those. :nonono:

I definitely count those. On the SBS board, Jarrett Lennon stated he gets paid for every appearance on the show, no matter how small. So even the top of his head in one frame of the opening credits gets him a check. Even a tiny, brief scene, recorded years earlier, counts as an appearance on the show, and he gets a check. If Hollywood considers that an appearance, who am I to argue?

And I remember now why I was thinking it was 11 appearances: the backdoor pilot, which clearly isn't after Season One, but certainly isn't a part of Season One, was the other episode I was thinking of.

Nancy aside in "Gossip", and arguably Molly in TNGP2, any girls could have played those little "walk-on" parts. Most of those appearances weren't tailored to the characters. In fact, they never even said the Julies' characters' names.

No way could Brenda or Miko have played the parts of Sue Ann and Cindy in "Gossip" or "Sex Symbol"; if they had, we as fans would be saying "WTF?! Why are Brenda and Miko hanging out with Nancy as if they are all old best friends?!" No, it was kinda important for people Natalie knew well to be gossiping about her, with Nancy. It feels like a betrayal, then, and less like Random Girls are gossiping about Natalie.

In the same way, turned around, the scene in "Graduation", where Blair and Jo and Random Girls also graduate, would have been much more powerful with the Lost Girls, or at least Nancy and Sue Ann, there. And so I feel as though their appearances were important, and the show wasn't quite as good in S4 without their continuity and the small things: Nancy's romances with Roger in "Gossip", "The Little Chill", and "Dear Me"; Molly's feminism in "The New Girl Part 2", Sue Ann's gossipy nature in "Gossip" and "Sex Symbol", references to Cindy's former tomboy nature in "The Little Chill", and even her continued friendship and rooming with Sue Ann, as seen in "Front Page", "Gossip" and "Sex Symbol"... for me, these are important, and nothing will take that away from me, DAMMIT!

These little touches prove that The Facts of Life was a cut above other sitcoms of that era. And that is important.

Aww

Awww, indeed!

Seeing all these kind well-wishes to Lisa on her birthday, from each of the other members of the Core Five, really warms my heart. I'd love to see Felice, Molly, and Julie Anne chime in, but even this is enough.

'80s, great commentary about Nancy; it's so wonderful that Nancy still remembers how welcoming Lisa was to her, from the very beginning, almost 40 years ago. I love that so, sooo much.

Julie mentions that she and Lisa "caught up". I imagine, based on that comment, that Julie called Lisa today, and that makes me very happy, too. 42 years of friendship that even a Cast Purge couldn't tear apart. Can you imagine being friends with co-workers from 40 years ago!?

Also: Brenda's NEVER gonna live down "Blaire"... we won't let her!:lol::lol::lol:

I don't, and I bet most people wouldn't. It doesn't feel fair to the character or the actor.

There's distinction here. It is not an "appearance", it is an instant of him being shown. An actor getting paid for every time they are seen on the show is different than how many times they actually appeared on the show. "Appearing" is part of the cast who is performing on camera for that episode. The Lost Girls never appeared themselves on the show in the Edna's Edibles era, but footage of them was shown in flashback.

It's like when you and Lorsie were disagreeing over Eastland in the later years. I agree with him, after "Brave New World Part 2", Eastland is never "shown" again in "real time" until the finale, but it is "seen" again in flashback.

No way could Brenda or Miko have played the parts of Sue Ann and Cindy in "Gossip" or "Sex Symbol";

Any girls could have played those parts. Just look at Terri, Jenny, Emily, Annie, etc. I'm of course not saying I'd rather have any girls play those parts, but most of the appearances were so small that they could have filled them with other girls.

if they had, we as fans would be saying "WTF?! Why are Brenda and Miko hanging out with Nancy as if they are all old best friends?!" No, it was kinda important for people Natalie knew well to be gossiping about her, with Nancy. It feels like a betrayal, then, and less like Random Girls are gossiping about Natalie.

Yes, here's where we agree, lol, we as a small group of loyal season 1 fans would have felt that way, but the viewing public by large doesn't (since sadly, a great many are not aware of our dear Lost Girls).

In the same way, turned around, the scene in "Graduation", where Blair and Jo and Random Girls also graduate, would have been much more powerful with the Lost Girls, or at least Nancy and Sue Ann, there.

Definitely!

And so I feel as though their appearances were important, and the show wasn't quite as good in S4 without their continuity and the small things:

Objectively though, their appearances are not important except for pretty much Nancy in "Gossip". Subjectively, like you, I love each and every second they're on screen!

Nancy's romances with Roger in "Gossip" and "Dear Me"; Molly's feminism in "The New Girl Part 2", Sue Ann's gossipy nature in "Gossip" and "Sex Symbol", references to Cindy's former tomboy nature in "The Little Chill", and even her continued friendship and rooming with Sue Ann, as seen in "Front Page", "Gossip" and "Sex Symbol"... for me, these are important, and nothing will take that away from me, DAMMIT!

lol, I agree that they are important to us on a subjective, personal level, yes.

These little touches prove that The Facts of Life was a cut above other sitcoms of that era. And that is important.

Yup, their (more often than not) care of continuity really added that feel of "family" to the show, and respect for the viewers (we just could have used even more, lol).

What? In this post? (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showpost.php?p=5488836&postcount=416) We see Eastland several times post-Season 4, including in the third movie, season 9, flashbacks in season 5, Pippa even wears the Eastland uniform for a whole season.

Any girls could have played those parts. Just look at Terri, Jenny, Emily, Annie, etc.

The impact would have been lost with Emily or Jenny sitting with Nancy in "Sex Symbol" or "Gossip". Those girls just didn't have the background to be chumming with Nancy, and they didn't have the history with Natalie that would make her care what they thought.

Additionally, in "Gossip", Tootie visibly brightens when Cindy invites her up to Cindy and Sue Ann's room to hang out. She wants to impress them; Tootie couldn't care less about hanging out with Emily or Jenny. Tootie exaggerates her gossip to impress these girls, in a way she never would have with girls she didn't know very well. That is why Sue Ann and Cindy were needed for these scenes, despite not being mentioned by name: they had a history with Tootie, and weren't random girls thrown in there. Tootie trusted them in a way she wouldn't have trusted Emily or Jenny or Brenda.

Yup, their (more often than not) care of continuity really added that feel of "family" to the show, and respect for the viewers (we just could have used even more, lol).

I agree we could have used more attention to continuity through Seasons 4 and 5, at the very least. The fact that they kept the Eastland school room set (and used it for "Langley") tells me they could easily have set a few episodes in Eastland during Seasons 5 and 6. How cool would it have been to see an Eastland scene with Tootie, Natalie, and Cindy, maybe throwing in Mr. Parker or other semi-regulars from the Golden Eastland Years?

But by this era, the original Eastland characters had finally become unimportant, and that opportunity was lost. But if I ever get a working DeLorean...

I think that is the correct word: family.

It's what has been said so many times, by so many cast members. Nancy about Lisa. Kim about Julie. Mindy about Felice. I just wish Molly was able to join in.

And hence they appeared in the episodes, albeit briefly and just in flashbacks.

If they didn't appear in the episodes, we wouldn't have seen them.

We're using "appear" in a different way. You're talking about their visual likeness at all, but the actresses did not take part in those episodes. They did not come to the set and join the cast and be videotaped in front of an audience. Therefore, the actresses did not appear on those shows in the active sense. They were shown in flashback footage. Counting a character's appearances for an honest count is each time they are performing on the show (like the image below); that's how many times they actively took part in episodes. If I were going to list other times they're seen, I would put "(seen in flashback only)" so people would know they didn't actually appear as their character with a new appearance and new dialogue, and would know, "oh, they showed footage of her, but she wasn't actually on that episode", so they would still know the count of how many times they actually appeared on the show each time they performed their character.

What? In this post? (http://www.sitcomsonline.com/boards/showpost.php?p=5488836&postcount=416) We see Eastland several times post-Season 4, including in the third movie, season 9, flashbacks in season 5, Pippa even wears the Eastland uniform for a whole season.

Like the girls, you see Eastland the school building in flashbacks, but not in the then present time, so it does not "appear" what was then currently; it was shown in flashbacks. So it's essentially not seen in the then current time from "Brave New World Part II" until the series finale.

The impact would have been lost with Emily or Jenny sitting with Nancy in "Sex Symbol" or "Gossip". Those girls just didn't have the background to be chumming with Nancy, and they didn't have the history with Natalie that would make her care what they thought.

Exactly. That's why we delight that the Lost Girls were used, but any girls could have played those parts.

But we do see it in flashbacks, and we see the girls wear the school uniform in Season 5, and Pippa wearing the school uniform throughout Season 9, and they talk about Eastland, and we even see the Eastland school set, now rebranded as "Langley", in Season Six. And then of course there are the scenes in Season Nine, and the third film gives us a lovely scene with the cafeteria.

Exactly. That's why we delight that the Lost Girls were used, but any girls could have played those parts.

Not to the same effect. Tootie gossiping with her former roommates, impressing them with her gossip, has a different effect than her just gossiping with Random Girls. Natalie being slut-shamed by old friends has a greater impact than being slut-shamed by random girls we don't know. So even in episodes where you say anyone could have played those parts, I disagree.

But we already saw this could have been done---and was---when Tootie was hanging out with Terry and Jenny where it should have been Sue Ann and Cindy.

I don't mind occasionally seeing episodes where the Core Four are hanging out with Terry, Jenny, Brenda, Emily, etc: there should be other girls at Eastland, and we should see them interact with the Core Four. But the episodes where they are hanging out with Nancy, Sue Ann, and Cindy have a greater level of continuity and believably: it's believable that Tootie confides in her former roommates, while it would be less believable that she would confide in a random girl.

They did appear; otherwise we wouldn't have seen them. They appeared in flashbacks. I didn't say they made appearances or take part or come to the set or anything you've said above. And when I explained that I was including the flashbacks, that really should have been the end of it. Instead, I was lectured that I wasn't allowed to count those and "corrected" over and over. But there's nothing wrong with my wording: I meant to include the flashbacks, and have always included the flashbacks. As the girls seem to have been paid for those scenes, and as I watched them on the screen with my own eyes, I would definitely count those as appearing in ten episodes. Indeed, IMDB often credits archival footage; though they haven't done so for FOL, we've already seen that IMDB isn't entirely consistent, and has some major mistakes, like "Neighbor Kid" appearing on the show in multiple episodes.

I kept explaining in different ways why I count it, hoping you would eventually drop it, but you kept coming back, even today, with reasons why I'm not allowed to count flashbacks. I kept commenting on your other posts, hoping you would just stop lecturing me on why I'm wrong. But it was in vain.

That's the distinction I was making, yes. It's seemed to me before that you really enjoy debating. But I do not. I have stuck up for things around this board I felt needed defense/clarification

The number of times Cindy, Molly, Nancy and Sue Ann appeared in episodes after the first season truly didn't need this many "defenses/clarifications". I now believe you like arguing about something that was entirely unnecessary.

I now believe you like arguing about something that was entirely unnecessary.

Well, that's incorrect, because I avoid arguing as much as possible. It's exasperating and stressful. I only liked to come here for fun. And who has time for drawn-out disagreements with as much as we work? Maybe you enjoy it, but I don't. I thought you might see what I meant but when it was clear you weren't going to come around to what I was saying, and since my belief was different than yours, I finally just said, fine, we'll just have to agree to disagree, like we've done before. It's obvious we interpret some things differently.

It was quiet common for the early season FOL girls to date boys played by actors in their 20s. All of the Bates Academy "boys" were in the 20s. Must have had a horrible education there is they still had 20 somethings in high school.

Aw, "Sue Ann" loves her "Nat 'n Toot"! :)

Is this just "fun" on the set during "Overachieving"? Maybe a cut scene?? They're on Mrs. Garrett's bed, and I don't remember Sue Ann ever looking in a compact! I'm thinking this was cut from the final broadcast! But if so, how did Julie get this picture?? It does look "broadcast quality", not like a "set photo". Fascinating!

I think they had a photographer on the set, besides Molly.

My pleasure, and my duty as an uber-"Facts" fan! :D

And what do you think of the explanations of the Sue Ann/Nat/Toot photo that was not from a moment on screen?? It LOOKS like it's on screen, but it's not in the episode.

But that's usually black & white "Getty" images with the watermark. This looks like a screen grab from footage on the show. Yet it doesn't exist in the episode. Fascinating.

I think it may indeed be a cut scene. Do we ever see Sue Ann holding a compact in the episode itself?

I'm 99% sure we do not. I think we would remember that!

I wonder where she got this??

When Nancy M. said rolls, it reminded me of a certain cinnamon photo. I don't dare to put this on her Instagram account though.

Nice find, Lorimar! This must have been circa 1982. I'm archiving it here.
