These are a specific type of Unexplained Death that are in all likelihood suicide by exposure to the elements. Don Kemp, Dan Wilson, Patricia Meehan, and David Stone are the cases on my mind. On the one hand, you have these cold "Irish Goodbye" setups. On the other hand, you have these histrionic red herring setups.
Regardless of whether or not these folks were mentally stable, they took their own lives by walking into the "nothing". Although we can't be 100% sure about Meehan, one drive through Circle, MT will convince you that she has likely perished.
Are there any other cases like this that come to your mind? Perhaps sea-faring instead of land-locked?
