Oh Baby, Baby! Britney Spears Musical sets Pre-Broadway Premiere Date
by Ruth Kinane
March 12, 2019

She’s so lucky, she’s a star and now she’s getting her own musical! On Tuesday, theater owner James L. Nederlander announced he is producing a new stage show featuring songs by the princess of pop herself, Miss Britney Jean Spears.

According to a press release, the musical comedy — titled Once Upon a One More Time (a play on Spears’ debut single “…Baby One More Time”) — isn’t based on the pop star’s life and won’t follow the traditional fairy tale format either.

Rather, “when Cinderella, Snow White, and other fairytale princesses gather for their book club, a rogue fairy godmother drops The Feminine Mystique into their corseted laps, spurring a royal revelation: Could there really be more to life than bird-made dresses and true love’s kiss?”

We’ll bet there’s some pretty wild choreography and costuming to accompany this big revelation.

The musical will be set to Spears’ songs and will feature an original book by Jon Hartmere (The Upside, bare), with direction by Tony nominee Kristin Hanggi (Rock of Ages) and choreography by MTV Video Music Award nominees Keone and Mari Madrid (Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself”, World of Dance).

“I’m so excited to have a musical with my songs – especially one that takes place in such a magical world filled with characters that I grew up on, who I love and adore,” says Spears. “This is a dream come true for me!”

Nederlander adds: “Throughout her career, Britney has captivated fans across the globe with her singular brand of energy and resilience. For three years, we have been working closely with her to develop a concept that perfectly encapsulates her unique spirit, and are so thrilled to finally bring this joyous and electrifying show to the stage.”

Once Upon a One More Time will have its world premiere this fall at Chicago’s James M. Nederlander Theatre with preview performances beginning Oct. 29, 2019 and opening night scheduled for Nov. 13.

The limited engagement will run through Dec. 1, with hopes of transferring to Broadway. Tickets go on sale on Sunday, Aug. 4.

Britney Spears Musical Heading to Broadway in 2023
by Joey Nolfi
December 2, 2022

A Britney Spears musical is hitting Broadway, baby, for the first time.

Once Upon a One More Time, a jukebox musical featuring the Grammy-winning artist's songs, is set to premiere in New York City's famed theater district with previews starting May 2023, ahead of a planned opening night at Broadway's Marquis Theatre in June.

Tony-winning producers James L. Nederlander and Hunter Arnold announced the news Friday, on Spears' 41st birthday. Tickets for the Spears musical go on sale Monday, with a fan pre-sale already underway.

Weaving together songs like "Oops!…I Did It Again," "Lucky," "Circus," and "Toxic," the musical unites classic fairy-tale and storybook characters like Cinderella and Snow White as they gather for a regular book club meeting until a rogue fairy godmother throws them for a loop after introducing them to The Feminine Mystique.

Though she's not formally involved with the show behind the scenes, Spears said in a statement via PEOPLE, "I'm so excited to have a musical with my songs — especially one that takes place in such a magical world filled with characters that I grew up on, who I love and adore. This is a dream come true for me!"

Broadway critics will savage her show like pit bulls on a raccoon. The show will close, which will drive Britany Spears to shave her head, strip bare ass naked and run down fifth avenue. Then she will be sent away for observation and narcotics and her amoral father will again get custodialship of her.

I called it.

I doubt Jamie Spears will ever get custodial Ship of her again. The ragging and dragging he'd get by Fans for custodial Ship of Britney again would be REALLY bad. About Britney, I remember about 10 years ago, a Britney Critic said something like,"Britney Spears is wealthy from her Pop Star Career, but is like 30 and can't even manage her own money and is being treated like a 15 year old Minor rather than a roughly 30 year old Grown Woman. She can't even balance a checkbook on her own!" I'm only 20 and I have my own house and two jobs. I'm 10 years years younger than her and have a better grip on my life than she does!

Britney Spears Musical Once Upon a One More Time to Close on Broadway
by Lester Fabian Brathwaite
August 21, 2023

Audiences for the Britney Spears musical Once Upon a One More Time have not been left chanting, "Gimme, gimme more" — at least not often enough to stave off the show's closing.

After 123 performances on Broadway, the production incorporating the songs of Spears amid a fairy-tale backdrop will hit you (baby) one last time on Sept. 3.

Once Upon a One More Time opened at the Marquis Theatre on June 22 and was notable for being fully authorized and licensed by a post-conservatorship Spears. The production retells classic fairy tales through a modern-day feminist lens.

Producers James L. Nederlander and Hunter Arnold said in a statement Monday, "We could not be prouder of this beautifully joyous and exhilarating show — which is not only a love letter to Britney's iconic artistry and singular effervescence, but also a brilliant display of the boundless talent of our cast and creative team."

Of course, news of the Britney Spears musical closing comes days after news of the pop star's other post-conservatorship venture coming to an end, her marriage to Sam Asghari.

But at least there's still hope on one of those fronts:

Plans are currently underway for a national tour and multiple international productions of Once Upon a One More Time, to be announced at a later date.
