View Full Version : How old do you think is TOO OLD for a discussion topic to be revived?

I was just wondering do you think there should be a cut-off point as to when to respond to a very old comment, and when to create a NEW seperate topic about the same topic.

I forget where it was but not long ago I saw a thread from the year 2001 revived just for someone to say, "I agree!"

My philosophy is 99% of threads don't have an expiration date so there should be no limit. Most topics are timeless so it wouldn't be worth starting a new thread just because of age.

It's kinda hard to know what to do b/c some mods get annoyed if you revive a really REALLY old thread, but some get annoyed if you create a new topic when an older one already exists... My general rule is, if I can't find what I wanna discuss on the first 2 pages, I will create a new topic.

The only issue I'd have with ppl reviving a nearly 20 year old thread is the ppl involved in the original discussion are likely long gone, esp. if it's a heated debate and an old argument gets revived from almost 20 years ago lol It just seemed like the person may have been trolling to revive a 2001 thread to simply say, "I agree" lol

Yeah I agree they should really have something more substantive to say if they're bumping up such an old thread.

Especially if it was a hot topic.

I just posted in a thread that hasn't had a post in 8 or 9 years. There should NEVER be a limit!

Threads can be even MORE interesting the older they are!

Most of the time a very old thread is revived it is a brand new member who is searching through old threads that are new to them.

Far worse to close off a thread with an inaccurate comment and simultaneously inhibit discussion.

I've been struggling to keep my thread on multi-band radios afloat.

Maybe because most people aren't interested in multi band radios?

Great idea!

Don't you mean the 2nd post though? The 1st post must be a welcome from a moderator.

Ok. I’d bet the second is a complaint about a TV networks schedule....

I disagree, a lot of threads here that are very old contain comments from members who have been long gone for years. Let's say you resurrect a thread from the dead then quote one of those members and disagree with their opinion. Is it really fair to them not knowing that they're possibly being slammed without a chance to defend themselves? Personally, I think that any thread or poll that hasn't seen any activity in 2 years should not be resurrected. I also can't stand it when someone starts a thread then after a few days of no replies decides to bump it just to get it back to the top of the page.

Well if someone starts arguing with someone who hasn't logged in in 15 years then yeah that's pretty weird. But my reasoning was that the posts themselves may still contain merit years after they're made and could contribute to a discussion in the present day. This is assuming the person bumping the thread isn't trolling by saying "cool" or "i agree" or something completely without substance.

As far as polls I agree with you because people's taste can change.

Good job!

TJ got upset for someone bumping that thread 7 months later in 2000! But that's because it was just a welcome thread. TJ is the administrator who started that thread almost 20 years ago!

He last posted on 3/4 so he's still active. Does he own this site or something?

But he was banned in 2004 or 4 years later so it was something else that got him banned.

That was all 2 Presidents ago!

I understand why members would revive old discussion threads. It's because they do not want multiple threads on the exact same topic.

For example, I had a fight with Family Ties Forever! a couple of years ago about this. I wanted to see how Family Ties would have fared if The Cosby Show hadn't premiered because of the sexual assault allegations against Bill Cosby (and his subsequent prison sentence). I started a thread on this topic at the "general Sitcoms" forum, but no one posted in it, so I decided to revive an old thread at the Family Ties thread. Apparently, Family Ties Forever! did not want the issue discussed at the Family Ties forum at all. I sent TJ a PM about this, but haven't gotten an answer from him, either. FamilyTies Forever! wants threads started three years ago to be the cut-off, and anything older than that will be closed immediately. Family Ties Forever! must have zero consideration for anyone who might get into the Family Ties series in the future and reply to a thread regardless of its age.
