The Late Show started regularly beating The Tonight Show in total viewers two years ago, but Fallon has always led or tied in the all-important 18-49 demographic -- until this week.
Stephen Colbert is averaging 3.8 million viewers to Jimmy Fallon's 2.5 million (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/03/05/business/media/colbert-fallon-ratings-nielsen.html)
For the first time, Colbert's Late Show has drawn a bigger Nielsen ratings point in the key 18-49 demo compared to Fallon's Tonight Show, according to The New York Times. That comes two years after Colbert eclipsed Fallon in total viewers. Fallon has previously led in that advertiser-coveted category. Meanwhile, among total viewers, Colbert is leaving Fallon in the dust, averaging 3.8 million viewers to Fallon's 2.5 million. While Colbert's total viewership is the same as last year, Fallon's numbers are down 17%. Last October, NBC hired former Today producer Jim Bell to oversee The Tonight Show to help boost ratings. Since Bell became involved, Fallon shown some improvement, especially with special episodes like last week's Larry Sanders-inspired tribute and an episode set in Puerto Rico.
