JamesG 02-28-2019, 12:52 PM LUKE PERRY SUFFERS STROKE ...
Hospitalized in L.A. Area
by TMZ Staff
2/28/19
Luke Perry suffered a massive stroke Wednesday, and is currently hospitalized ... TMZ has learned.
Paramedics responded to Luke's home in Sherman Oaks around 9:40 AM. We know the call came into the fire department for someone suffering a stroke, and Luke was transported to a nearby hospital. It's unclear what his condition is right now.
The 52-year-old who stars as Archie's dad, Fred Andrews, on "Riverdale", had been shooting episodes recently in L.A. on the Warner Bros. lot.
Luke's medical crisis coincidentally struck on the very same day Fox announced it will reboot "Beverly Hills, 90210" -- the show on which he shot to fame, playing Dylan McKay in the 90s. While his former costars -- Jennie Garth, Ian Ziering, Jason Priestly, Brian Austin Green, Tori Spelling and Gabrielle Carteris -- will be on the revived series, Luke has not signed on to the project.
Update 8:38 AM PT: A rep for Luke tells TMZ that he is currently under observation at the hospital.

Mr. Television 02-28-2019, 03:28 PM Wow. So young to have a stroke.
Steve_uk 02-28-2019, 03:30 PM Wow. So young to have a stroke.
Yes and he also was afflicted with colon cancer.
JamesG 02-28-2019, 03:43 PM Wow. So young to have a stroke.
One of my friends had a stroke at 25, but his was brought on from cocaine use. So I guess it's a different situation from a "natural" stroke.

You're making an assumption there.
Bonniegirl 02-28-2019, 04:28 PM Wow!! That is horrible!! :confused:Poor Luke ! :( Prayers that he can recover from it! !
Praying that he'll be okay and recover.
JamesG 02-28-2019, 04:54 PM You're making an assumption there.
What I meant is that most young people (20s-30s) don't usually suffer strokes, unless they are caused by external factors (illness, trauma, drugs..)
Someone having a stroke "naturally" vs. someone OD'ing on drugs is a different case. I wasn't implying Luke Perry's was caused by drugs. It's young for this, so sad.

Yes but it's unclear what induced Perry's stroke.

Luke Perry's rep denies report he's in a coma (https://etcanada.com/news/425310/luke-perry-hospitalized-after-suffering-possible-stroke/)
TMZ had reported that doctors placed the former Beverly Hills, 90210 star in a "medically induced coma" (https://www.tmz.com/2019/02/28/luke-perry-stroke-riverdale-beverly-hills-90210-hospitalized/) after he reportedly suffered a stroke on Wednesday. TMZ later reported, "although a family member says Luke was placed in a coma, his rep says he is not. We're told he is sedated."
OH Nuts! 03-01-2019, 12:01 AM Oh my. Praying he gets well fast.
TVShowAddict 03-01-2019, 03:14 PM It is pretty sad every time someone dies or have health problems, they all assume it is from drugs! Get well Perry!
Schmoopie 03-02-2019, 03:17 AM That's awful. I hope he makes a full recovery.
80sTrivia 03-02-2019, 07:36 AM Wishing Luke a speedy and complete recovery from his stroke...
In this day of advanced technology, people are still passing away young. In fact, Americans’ average life expectancy dropped, due to the opioid epidemic. Bottom line is modern American medicine can only do so much. It’s each individual’s responsibility to make sure they are in good health. Admittedly that’s harder to do in America since we allow so many chemicals to be put into packaged foods that the E.U. won’t allow. And we don’t guarantee health insurance to anyone under 65.
I don’t mean to get too deep or political but I’m getting tired of seeing people have serious health problems in their 30s, 40s, and 50s.

It's no wonder the politicians are shying away from universal healthcare, when the burden on the taxpayer in the coming years is set to increase substantially. https://www.bbc.co.uk/news/health-46139595
Shannen Doherty reveals she's been contact with Luke Perry since his hospitalization (https://www.etonline.com/shannen-doherty-emotionally-shares-shes-been-in-touch-with-luke-perry-since-his-stroke-exclusive)

MrCleveland 03-04-2019, 02:49 PM Perry was TOO young to go, but the good performers die young...
80sTrivia 03-04-2019, 04:20 PM So sad to hear the news of Luke's tragic passing at such a young age... :( :( :(
king of comedy 03-04-2019, 05:58 PM OMG!! I was shocked and speechless. So young. R.I.P. Luke.
dee2364 03-04-2019, 08:16 PM As a GenXer, it's so shocking to see so many of us dying so young, especially men. (The lead singer of The Prodigy also died today). We didn't grow up with so many of the massive health and lifestyle issues of previous generations but it seems as if many are dying early, anyway.

It's the chemicals in food and the fact that health Care is so expensive that it discourages preventive maintenance, so you don't go to the doctor until it's serious, and possibly too late.
Luke Perry's Dylan McKay transcended space and time on Beverly Hills, 90210 (https://www.vulture.com/2019/03/luke-perry-90210-dylan-mckay-remembrance.html)
"Dylan McKay (https://www.tvtattle.com/shows/beverly-hills-90210) was simultaneously forever young and divorced from a mundane concept like age," says Jen Chaney of Luke Perry (https://www.tvtattle.com/people/luke-perry), who died today at age 52. "He was angsty and sexy in a decade when being angsty and sexy were the key component of the male ideal. He was an obvious descendant of James Dean, with a tower of moussed-up hair that defied the laws of gravity and a forehead that conveyed an entire set of feelings separate from what was happening on the rest of his beautiful face. He was the Fonzie of the ’90s, except he was too authentic to have a catchphrase. He was a pre–Jordan Catalano Jordan Catalano, except much smarter and even more tortured. Dylan wasn’t just hot and dangerous, he also was intelligent and sensitive and spoke to his girlfriend Brenda Walsh with a warmth that could take all of the chill out of your ice-cold Snapple. Luke Perry obviously wasn’t Dylan McKay. But he became so intertwined with the character that the two became synonymous, which is why it’s so hard to process the news that Perry died Monday at age 52 after having a massive stroke from which he did not recover. This doesn’t make any sense. Dylan McKay can’t die. In our minds and hearts, he’s still at West Beverly, still seducing Brenda on prom night when she wore the same black-and-white dress as Kelly, still (later) struggling to choose between Brenda and Kelly, still contending with his demons and his drinking and his shifty dad, still saying cheesy things like 'I know that cloud' to comfort his best friend Brandon while making those cheesy things sound meaningful and true."

That...and the stress that comes with life...as a Millennial, I sometimes feel that pain...
Luke Perry was texting with Beverly Hills, 90210 co-stars Tori Spelling and Jennie Garth one week before his death (https://people.com/tv/tori-spelling-jennie-garth-were-in-touch-with-luke-perry-before-death/)
Shannen Doherty revealed to People that she had lunch with Perry last month. But she wasn't the only 90210 alum he was in contact with last month. According to People, Perry sent Garth a photo of his 18-year-old daughter Sophie, who was doing charity work in Malawi. He was also texting with Spelling. “He adored his kids beyond words,” says Spelling. “Luke was one of the kindest and most humble human beings I’ve ever known.” ALSO: Luke Perry's daughter Sophie writes on Instagram that "I have received an overwhelming amount of love and support.” (https://www.instagram.com/p/Buo6FIuAhfB/)
Tiffani Thiessen recalls Luke Perry welcoming her to Beverly Hills, 90210 with open arms (https://www.etonline.com/tiffani-thiessen-recalls-how-luke-perry-welcomed-her-with-open-arms-when-she-joined-90210-121081)
“My heart has been weighing heavy,” Thiessen wrote in an Instagram tribute (https://www.instagram.com/p/Butj8aoJrQ3/) this morning in reaction to Perry's death. “The loss of a man who started as my co-star but quickly became my friend. He welcomed me on my very first day of #90210 with open arms. A day that was not an easy one for me. I was coming in to a show, a family really, that had been together for over 4 years. But this man took me under his wing and made me feel at home. Made me feel like I belonged in his TV family.” ALSO: Riverdale's Camila Mendes, Madelaine Petsch and Cole Sprouse pay tribute to Perry (https://www.eonline.com/au/news/1021650/riverdale-s-camila-mendes-and-cole-spouse-mourn-death-of-luke-perry).

Report: Shannen Doherty "may participate" in Fox's Beverly Hills, 90210 revival after Luke Perry's death (https://www.usmagazine.com/celebrity-news/news/shannen-doherty-reconsidering-90210-revival-after-luke-perry-death/)
Doherty and Perry were the only main cast members from the original 90210 cast who didn't sign on for the Fox revival, in which cast members play heightened versions of themselves. Us Weekly spoke to one of Doherty's friends, who said: “Luke was Shannen’s favorite in the cast. She may participate now if they somehow pay homage to him.”
Both Riverdale and Luke Perry benefitted from his casting (https://www.tvtattle.com/item/Both-Riverdale-and-Luke-Perry-benefitted-from-his-casting-xXSN84)
"On the one hand, Perry snagged a high-profile gig on a series that was born amid intense buzz," says Jason Heller, pointing out that Perry had been doing many under-the-radar roles since leaving Beverly Hills, 90210. "The show, on the other hand, benefited from a seasoned pro with a built-in allure, especially to middle-aged viewers who still saw the sex appeal in Perry’s grizzled beard and the life-worn wisdom of his performance. Perry’s habitation of Fred Andrews was subtle yet powerful: In a town overflowing with neon lights, noir vibes, and dark machinations, Fred served as a moral compass for Archie, and for the morality-challenged Riverdale as a whole. If Riverdale is an admittedly melodramatic microcosm of America today—and it’s not a stretch to say it is—Fred was the peacemaker, the healer, a beacon of generosity, empathy, and integrity who, naturally, seemed to harbor some unsavory secrets of his own...Perry did far more for the show than turn in a solid, veteran-actor performance. Warmly nuanced and effortlessly charismatic, he anchored a stable of quirky characters and wild story lines—from the mysterious death of a football star to the protracted hunt for a serial killer to an intra-city gang war."

The former Beverly Hills, 90210 star's Feb. 6, 1993 hosting gig (http://www.nbc.com/saturday-night-live/cast/luke-perry-61556) with musical guest Mick Jagger will be re-aired on Saturday night in NBC's Vintage Saturday Night Live 10 p.m. timeslot. Perry, who died Monday at age 52, was the second 90210 cast member to host SNL after Jason Priestley, who was peppered with Luke Perry questions (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=d3wPg9_QM3I) when he hosted in February 1992.
