I contacted the seller and asked if this has the dubbed in phone number. I have no plans to bid on this BTW.

This is his reply.

“I personally believe that the story of the dubbed in phone number is an urban myth, despite it being repeated on the IMDB web site. If the phone number was changed prior to the first airing, then it would have been changed before the 35mm air prints were struck, and since the 16mm prints were struck from the 35mm, it would not be possible for any 16mm print to have a different phone number.

Also note that the first run 35mm air prints had the "bus" opening credits, where the characters were riding in a bus with Ralph driving as the titles/credits rolled. When the show was syndicated for re-runs, the opening was changed to the "fireworks/moon" credits that we all know. All the prints I am auctioning have the fireworks/moon credits.

The short answer to your question is that the print has the dubbed in phone number, if indeed it was dubbed”.

In his response the guy makes it sound like some conspiracy. The number was changed and dubbed over, no question about it, we just can't pin down when. The mini mystery remains: Was it changed for the original broadcast or after due to conflict with a real number?

I understand, though, that some people never pick up on little things like that in media production, so a casual viewer might not notice anything was tampered with.
