Danai Gurira is celebrating her 41st birthday. Gurira was born in Iowa, but in the early 1980s she and her parents returned to their native Zimbabwe. She returned to the US as a college student, and eventually earned an MFA in acting at NYU. Gurira began working in US television and film in the mid-2000s. Her first notable role was in the 2007 indie drama The Visitor.
In 2012, Gurira became better known to American audiences when she was cast as the katana-bearing Michonne on The Walking Dead.
