View Full Version : Molly Ringwald Looks Back on Getting Fired from "The Facts of Life"
JamesG 01-31-2019, 02:19 AM Molly Ringwald Recalls being Fired from "The Facts of Life" When she was 12
by Maureen Lee Lenker
Jan. 30, 2019
Molly Ringwald may have been a 1980s “It” girl thanks to her roles in John Hughes films, but her early career was a little bit bumpy.
While sitting down with PeopleTV’s Couch Surfing, the actress revealed she was fired from one of her first major acting gigs, featuring on "The Facts of Life" when she was 12 years old. Ringwald explained that the show initially began with this concept of an all-girls school focusing on numerous female characters throughout the first season.
Eventually, they decided to narrow the focus to four girls: Natalie, Tootie, Blair, and originally Ringwald’s character, Molly (naturally).
“Then they changed their minds and then fired me, which was kind of hard as a 12 year old girl,” she recalled. “What they said is, they wanted something closer to Lisa Whelchel, who played Blair, they wanted something closer to her age and I was too young at the time. I was a little bit of a different generation.”
Ringwald did have the option to return to the show from time-to-time, but she admits dealing with the rejection was too hard for her at such a young age.
“Once you’ve been a regular and then you’re booted to be a semi-regular, it was really hard and humiliating,” she said. “My mom said, ‘Do you really want to do this?’ and I said, ‘No,’ and that was it. I wasn’t on the show anymore.”
This formative experience made Ringwald cautious, so much so that she’s been reluctant to indulge her own daughter’s interest in acting until very recently.

'80sSitcoms 01-31-2019, 02:23 AM Oooo, thanks JamesG! Great reading!
So interesting more of this talk of "Molly was to be the 4th"...when one of the FOL documentaries claims Julie Anne Haddock was the last girl to bet let go. Hmmm...
It's so nice to hear her divulge more details of her "Facts" experience. Thanks again!
RetroGuy2000 01-31-2019, 02:26 AM SO glad Molly's at last opening up and talking about the Cast Purge!
Thanks for sharing this, James.
'80sSitcoms 01-31-2019, 02:33 AM Okay, I just watched the video, and this is fascinating. We get to actually watch Molly Ringwald watching herself as Molly Parker on FOL! We've never seen ANY of the cast watching the show before! That really struck a chord with me big time. And she gets to chuckle at herself, so cute. :)
And how cool to hear her say "Blair", "Natalie", and "Tootie" as an adult! :D
RetroGuy2000 01-31-2019, 02:37 AM Yes! I've downloaded the video already.

I was just totally blown away in that video watching "The Facts of Life" actually WITH Molly Ringwald!
:eek2:
RetroGuy2000 01-31-2019, 02:52 AM I know. It's so great. It's even better than Molly wishing Charlotte a happy birthday, or Molly talking smack about Mindy Cohn and getting fired. Just such a pleasant surprise!

"talking smack", haha
I love that they've met in adulthood, and Molly says Mindy's a very nice person. :) That makes me wonder, has she ever run into any of the other Eastland girls?? That would be so cool!
'80sSitcoms 01-31-2019, 10:14 AM Too bad she doesn’t talk about Sue Ann, Cindy, or Nancy! :(
Yeah, but too bad she wasn't asked about them -- or Mrs. Garrett, especially since Charlotte is gone now.
'80sSitcoms 01-31-2019, 04:02 PM Here we go guys, a gallery of Molly Ringwald watching "The Facts of Life"! Wow, our first instance watching a cast member watch the show! Group hug! :grouphug:

Seriously though its very cool that we see her watching a FOL scene, its great to hear her talk about her side of events. I believe her, I think maybe producers want us to think they knew right away they were hiring a new cast member.

Exactly!
'80sSitcoms 02-01-2019, 11:35 AM I may get to it, lol.
I've been watching the show on TV for a couple of weeks now and I'm starting to wonder if they kept the right girls. I loved all the girls that were featured in the first season and I feel sad that they were all gone. If it was me, I would have fired Natalie and Tootie and kept the rest and then add Jo for the next season. It would have made the show more fun, less preachy in later seasons, and a lot more visually appealing.
Lorimar Television 02-01-2019, 08:07 PM I may get to it, lol.
MAY?! :o
RetroGuy2000 02-02-2019, 02:04 AM I've been watching the show on TV for a couple of weeks now and I'm starting to wonder if they kept the right girls. If it was me, I would have fired Natalie and Tootie and kept the rest and then add Jo for the next season. That definitely would have been a very different show! It would have been, I think, a lot less "four musketeer"-y feeling, and more... Well, as you say, more visually appealing, and, I suspect, more sporty. There would have been more gymnastics, more dating, more talk about Roger. We'd see how Molly felt about Sadie Hawkins. It's interesting to even consider.
I love the Lost Girls, but I also love the "core four".
If only Tootie and Natalie had been fired, would this have allowed the remaining characters room to breathe? There still would have been six girls, not a huge difference from the seven on the previous season, especially considering that Nancy had very few lines during most of the first season already.
Impressions 02-04-2019, 03:14 PM I would be interesting if Molly Ringwald was kept around, I definitely found her character to have the foundation to be a potentially interesting character. I think they could've further developed her to be sort of a as a civil justice warrior, but not to the point were the show became overly political, which would've given it a fun touch.
I do sympathize with Molly Ringwald though, it would be humiliating to be demoted to a minor cast member, and I'm glad she quit to find bigger fame as a movie star.
'80sSitcoms 02-04-2019, 03:21 PM I do sympathize with Molly Ringwald though, it would be humiliating to be demoted to a minor cast member
Indeed, not even minor, just "recurring". And yeah, especially if it's true that she was touted to be one of the four girls who were remaining on.
RetroGuy2000 02-05-2019, 01:44 AM I am so proud of Molly for being able to not only move on, but to talk openly and honestly about her feelings during that era. As a Lost Girls fan, I have so much respect for her being able to finally open up and talk about what was clearly a difficult time for her.

Another idea I had was that it was too bad they didn't get their own spinoff as well which for now I will call "The Lost Girls". NBC could have aired it right after "Diff'rent Strokes" and "The Facts Of Life" and they would have had another hit on their hands.

Wasn't she pregnant then?
RetroGuy2000 02-11-2019, 08:53 AM Also: I very much like in this interview that Molly now openly admits that she was fired, as opposed to her previous comments on WWHL, that she "wasn't fired", just "let go". There was a debate a couple of years ago about Molly denying being fired and only admitting to being "let go"; it seems Molly now uses the same phrasing as John Lawlor, who openly stated in the E! True Hollywood Story that he'd been fired.
'80sSitcoms 02-11-2019, 10:55 AM Well, if anyone states that they were "fired", they should state it in this way, due to the connotation of that word: "I was fired, but not for doing anything wrong."
Because they really were let go.
In any job, if you are cut from it, but not for anything wrong on your part, you were rarely ever "fired". You were let go, laid off, etc. These poor girls were let go because the show's staff took on more than they could chew.

RetroGuy2000 02-11-2019, 10:07 PM Right, not saying she didn't have a right to of course ;)
Dana had every right to get pregnant, and I can't believe they producers fired her for that. Dana's drug use was out of control, and I've always suspected that was the real reason she was fired, but the producers have always denied it. Which just makes them look dickish.

I guess they really wanted a wholesome image. The 80s were a different time and an unwed mother was still a big deal then. Didn’t they force some young actresses to bind their boobs so nobody could see they were becoming women?
Schmoopie 06-08-2019, 06:48 PM I didn't realize (or had forgotten) that she had been fired. It's been kind of fun watching the Season 1 episodes and seeing her in her role as Molly. So different from the movies that she's made.
Sitcommania 06-08-2019, 08:10 PM I feel fired is fired. There shouldn’t be any shame in it unless you’ve done something illegal or morally wrong. It happens to everyone. That said, it’s traumatic when you’re a kid.
Schmoopie 06-08-2019, 09:24 PM I agree and it would be traumatic for a kid.

I agree that Molly has nothing to be ashamed of (nor do other girls who were fired at the same time). She did the best she could with the material she was given, and network suits are to blame for some poor decisions. Like deciding seven students was "too many" for a school.

Lol exactly
Schmoopie 06-11-2019, 07:03 PM This has nothing to do with Molly per say but I ddn't really like her character at all. I didn't like the way she was written. But we all know that Molly is a great actress. She proved that in her blockbuster movies.

I didn't really care for how Molly was written, either, but the character had some potential. Unfortunately, Molly was given a lot of clunky lines, and some lines that felt artificial coming out of a 12-year-old's mouth. Despite this criticism, more could have been done with Molly Parker, and as you say, and I agree, Molly Ringwald would soon showcase her talent in a string of hit films.

With a certain not-so-hit space clunker along the way. ;)

Artificial is a good word. That's what I was looking for. I'm sure she would have gotten better had her character stayed on the show longer but despite the disappointment that I know she felt, it worked in her favor.

I always try to remind myself that there are other fish in the sea when a disappointment like that happens. It's great that Molly hung in there and didn't throw in the towel. But I know she was devastated about it, and didn't talk about it publicly for many, many years.
'80sSitcoms 07-03-2019, 11:35 AM She's making progress. As far as I've been able to find, she didn't mention the show at all between 1986 (when she made the "worst job" comment) and 2015. Seems she's slowly coming around.
Thanks to something that's happened, I think she is.
I've often wondered what it would be like to have the opportunity to totally "fan boy" to her how much I loved her on FOL, but then wondering how much "salt I'd be rubbing in" without meaning to. But, I recently commented on a post by her on social media where I said something she shared reminded me about her feisty feminist character on "Facts of Life" who stood up for rights,
AND SHE "LIKED" IT.

Congratulations, '80s! Not only am I happy for you that Molly liked what you had to say, I'm also very happy for Molly, getting to read that sort of positive feedback.
Getting fired from The Facts of Life was incredibly tough for Molly: that much she has made clear. Her being able to hear from a fan that her work on the show is still remembered and appreciated, even after 40 years, was something I had hoped for her, for a long time.
With Molly opening up about her experience on FOL, I'm hopeful that eventually we'll get even more interviews, or a chapter in a (much better) book.

Thanks Retro! Yes, it was unforeseen, so a HUGE ultra delightful surprise for me!!

I know, because I remembered you mentioning similar sentiments here several times in the past (how you're glad to see that she seems to be finally mellowing and willing to discuss her time on FOL more, and the like). That's why I made it a point to mention it here. :)
If anyone else watched Molly on "The Facts of Life", you'll remember that her character Molly Parker was a feisty feminist who stood up for the rights of others, and for the environment too. This post really echos her character!

Agreed!
She made a social media post at the end of the month wishing a Happy Pride Month to the LGBTQ community and saying she stood with them, and that reminded me of Molly Parker. :)
