Hello, I'm from Italy and I am a huge fan of FOL and DS. I love it, it's a wonderful show. My favorite seasons are 2-5 and my favorite characters are Mrs. Garrett, Natalie and Blair. My least favorite seasons are 1 and 9 but I like every year, characters Molly (I find her boring sometimes ) and Kelly the shoplifter, but really, I love every aspect of this show. I watch the episodes in English because the Italian dub is terrible. Here in Italy the show was renamed "L'albero delle mele" which means the apple tree, because apple represents a girl growing up. I'm really happy to be here on this forum with other FOL members. Forgive my bad english

Oh wow, FOL-FAN-ITA, welcome to the board!

We're glad to have you here, and that's wonderful that you enjoy the show! I love seasons 1-4, and I like 5 and 6 as well, and 7-9 are so different, but I enjoy them for what they are.

I'm sorry to hear you don't like Molly, she's my second favorite of what we call "the Lost Girls" (the four girls who were cut from the show after season 1: Sue Ann, Nancy, Cindy, and Molly). That's interesting you find Molly "boring", because she they used her as a feminist character, while not giving poor Nancy much of anything to do. If they hadn't have invented Roger, Nancy would have barely spoken! lol (but I agree with you on Kelly, I have no use for her)

"The Apple Tree"?? That's cute! :) "L'albero delle mele", it's cool to know the show's name in Italian! popcorn: :so

And your English is very good! Welcome aboard! :D

Hi '80'sSitcoms. I agree with you that seasons 7-9 are so different from the previous ones, i was so sad when Mrs Garrett left the show. Nothing against Beverly Ann but Mrs Garrett was wonderful. She was so funny on DS and on Fol she was perfect. I also like some season 1 episode (Rough Housing, Emily Dickinson, I.Q. and others) but seasons 2-5 were the best. My favorite Lost Girls are in order: Sue Ann, Cindy, Nancy and Molly. Poor Nancy, I agree with you. She was there with nothing to do, although she had a major role in The Girls School episode. I also wanted to see Kimberly at Eastland sometimes. Thanks for your welcome. Good evening (here in Italy it's 6:35 pm)

Yes, Mrs. Garrett was so wonderful! I think every fan of the show adores her. :) She is so funny , and also so comforting. :grouphug:

I consider the "golden age" of the show to be seasons 2-4, what I call "the classic cafeteria years", as that is the most iconic era of the show. I love season 1 too and wish it had been extended with more balanced scripts for all the girls. Character-wise, my favorite Lost Girl order is: Cindy, Molly, Sue Ann, Nancy.

I too wish we had gotten to see Kimberly at Eastland more!

"The Apple Tree", because girls growing up are like apples---I love that!

Mrs G. was wonderful. Everyone needs Edna Garrett in his/her life. The cafeteria, I love it, every single event takes place there :D:D:D. Eastland has only one dorm, Mrs Garrett's room, the girl's room and the cafeteria :D:D:D:D:D. It's so bizarre our italian title, isn't it? Compare a girl to an apple :D:D:D. Here, tv networks changed the title of the show and also the opening credits music. I like the original music, You take the good, you take the bad :D:D. Plus, seasons 6-9, Goes to Paris and Down Under were unpublished, so I watch the series with the original language.

 I'm laughing because a fellow member of this board is bothered by the fact that "every single event" is in the cafeteria, lol (but he loves the show!).

I love the cafeteria too! I love the layout, the architecture, and the color: I call it "Eastland Yellow", that beautiful pale soft yellow, and I would love to have rooms that color in my own home. :)

Actually this isn't a dorm though, it's the cafeteria building. There are separate dorms on campus (which you saw in season 1).

Yes, I love that song! Especially the closing song too! :guitar: :drummer:

They changed the music in Italy? Wow! I guess that makes sense, if they changed the title, but it's kind of a shame, because the music is so wonderful!

Plus, seasons 6-9, Goes to Paris and Down Under were unpublished, so I watch the series with the original language.

Oh wow---glad you finally got to watch them all! I just watched "Paris" Sunday night as my kick-off to watching season 4! popcorn: :so

Well, I don't think they did do that. Because those freezes keep happening at the same time intervals all throughout, my belief is that it's the video transfer/upload that freezes up, and not the actual opening.

By the way, in the second one, I LOVED getting to see a few moments from the show after everyone's introduced! Tootie opening the door to alert us to the pig on the bus, Mrs. Garrett affectionately playing with Cindy's hair in the mirror, Natalie and Tootie gambling---that was awesome!

On nearly every early '80s drama and sitcom.

I need examples of sitcoms. I LOVE '80s sitcoms, and I can't think of any that used freeze frames! ;)

Well, wait---"Designing Women" did some...maybe they did all the time? I never thought about it before, but they did use freeze frame endings. But I can't say they were "overused" because I can't think of any other sitcoms they were used on, lol.

Oh, wait.

They were used on FOL! I never really thought about it! But not in season 1. And maybe not in the post-Edna years?

Okay, and "Who's the Boss?" used them.

But "Golden Girls" didn't use them. "Mr. Belvedere" didn't use them. My beloved "Mama's Family" didn't use them. I don't think "Empty Nest" or "Amen" used them. "227" I think may have used them, but I haven't watched it in a while.

Anyway, why put down freeze frames? They're awesome! My soap I used to watch started using freeze frames circa 1986 or '7, and did for every episode up until, like, '97 or so. And boy, if you wanna talk about effective freeze frames, use 'em on a soap! Sometimes poignant, sometimes suspenseful, sometimes climactic! I was so glad that some of my favorite eras of the show were in the freeze frame time frame. :) (no pun intended, ha)

Freeze frames can be effective, but they were overused in the late 1970s and early 1980s. They were so overused that they became iconic of that era, like jump scares in today's horror films.

You've given some examples, above, but there are thousands of other examples of freeze frames in 1980s media.

I still remember how someone had the ignorant audacity to post this poll circa 2002:

"Who's your favorite character besides Jo?"

Well, I posted that I couldn't vote in the poll, because Jo was not my favorite character to begin with. A few others of us sneaking our way around the Nancy McKeon Brigade posted similar sentiments.

Whaaat? :D:D. Jo was funny,I like her and all but she's not my favorite character

Exactly. I'm sure she's many people's favorite, but not to the exclusion of so many other characters.

Probably they did that because season 1 and 2 came here in Italy together. Italians confused :D:D

Ah.... still, it's very odd. They would have had to splice in the Season One intro onto the Season Two episodes.

Ciao, FOL-FAN-ITA!

Look! I'm in Italy!

Okay, it's really the Italy pavilion at Walt Disney World's EPCOT Center's "World Showcase" park in Florida, America. It features 11 different countries from around the world. Do you think it looks like I'm in Italy? :)

Wow! Thanks for sharing these, '80s! This must have been prior to 1994: the passport says "EPCOT Center".

Well, it was actually after 1994, so I guess they must have been using these printed up passports until they ran out.

Must be!

I remember in 2006, well before Disney-MGM was rebranded as Disney's Hollywood Studios in 2008, we were already passing out maps that said Disney Studios.
