View Full Version : When and where did you first see The Facts of Life?
RetroGuy2000 01-19-2019, 02:14 AM Lorimar has told us that he didn't see FOL until it started airing on Nick at Night, which was, I guess, somewhere around the early 2000s.
This seems sooo late to me (not "bad", just seems odd); I distinctly recall watching reruns of the show over the summer in the daytime on NBC sometime in the early 1980s, circa 1982. Although I might have seen the show prior to that, I definitely recall that my sister and I were regular viewers by that point. My sister even got a little red raincoat that was just like Tootie's, in "Flash Flood", because she wanted to be just like Tootie.
I was so confused because the daytime episodes had Lost Girls, but the nighttime episodes had no Lost Girls. I couldn't figure out why. I didn't know that the daytime episodes were older reruns, and that the nighttime episodes were new episodes.

Lorimar Television 01-19-2019, 05:27 AM Yes it was 2000 exactly when nick aired it. Strange to think about but that’s actually almost 20 years ago now.
Christopher 01-19-2019, 06:07 AM I believe it was either 89 or 90 when I first got into The Facts of Life. It was on local syndication channels back then. When it went to USA Network, I became a hard core fan recording the show on VHS tapes and the marathon USA would air of The Facts of Life. I remember that marathon had cast interviews. Specifically Mindy's interview I remember the most because she talked about "The Breaking Point" and how fans thanked them for that episode. When The Facts of Life started on N@N, I started recording the show on that network too. I remember their week long marathon when it first started and The Blair / Tootie project marathon they had. My only complaint with N@N was that they skipped the really controversial episodes. Thank God for DVD releases.

Definitely feels strange to think about that way, for sure!

Definitely a ground-breaking episode!

Ah, yes, the Blair Tootie Project! Those ads were soooo funny!

Yeah, I definitely remember lots of episodes being skipped, and being, like, "WTF?! I know there were other episodes! I remember them!"

So you saw it when it started? Awesome! Do you remember what episode? What did you think of the changes that followed?
Mr. Television 01-19-2019, 09:18 PM So you saw it when it started? Awesome! Do you remember what episode? What did you think of the changes that followed?
Well I was a fan of DS so I just happen to catch it that summer because of Mrs. Garrett. Don't remember if I saw the first episode then or not but I think I did. Wasn't really a big fan of the show under that format. I know I would watch it sometimes if nothing else was on . I didn't start watching every week until they made the changes and added Jo to the cast. Then I pretty much watched it every week until the show left the air. I liked the revamped show much better but looking back the first season episodes weren't that bad. Even though the show was about girls and I was a boy there were some episodes I could really relate too. I think that's what made the show a success.

Mr. Television, thanks for your thoughts on the earliest years of the show.
Remember the lost girl commercial they had talking about them? I think they said "Boy crazy Nancy, Kansas girl Sue Ann, tomboy Cindy, and feminist Molly" then ended with the clip of Sue Ann in IQ saying, "how do you think it feels to spend the rest of your life in the basement?"
Thats why I pictured Nancy and Sue Ann living in the basement of Ednas Edibles

I only vaguely remember that commercial, and started to confuse it with the more sinister one they were playing around Halloween one year, indicating that something dreadful had happened to Molly. That one ends with "...but no Molly Ringwald."

Impressions 02-09-2019, 12:12 AM I first saw it on Nick at Nite and loved it, but then didn't really get into it until The Hallmark Channel aired in like 17 years ago. Now I have all the DVDs and watch it :D

Oh wow, just like Lorimar Television! Gosh, I can't imagine people not discovering this show until N@N! By then it was "nostalgia"!

Yes, I watched it on there too! The Hallmark Channel edited the opening scene of every episode to make the first couple of minutes a "teaser" before then going into the introduction credits theme! That was so weird to see!
Heenan Fan 02-09-2019, 12:36 AM From the very beginning in 1979. I watched the backdoor pilot on Different Strokes. I was 6 years old and was hooked on both shows. FOL was my 2nd favorite show behind Three's Company in the early 80's.
I rarely watch it today though.

MeTV. Growing up, I was only allowed to watch very few channels which were restricted to just the kids stuff only.

It was no big deal because I hadn't fallin' in love with the two Julies yet until I hit puberty and watching syndication a few years later.
I can honestly say though that I can remember watching season 2, episode 1 when it first aired. Both me and my sister were convinced Jo was a boy trying to pull a fast one, ala Bossom Buddies type stuff;)

lol, but the show you were watching had almost completely changed. Even if you hadn't "loved" any of the girls yet, that might still upset your 7-year-old comfort zone of a show you loved, lol.

cfr1970 02-13-2019, 06:25 PM I watched from when it started playing on Wednesday nights because I distinctly remember tuning into The Incredible Hulk & The Dukes of Hazzard every Friday night so I definitely didn't tune into the first season.
I also distinctly remember my Mom actually telling me I can't watch the show and I always defied her and turned it on anyway because all my classmates were watching it. In hindsight, I think it was the title that made her think it was an "adult" show and too mature for my pre teen ears.

Well it did go up against The Incredible Hulk which was a big hit with the kids then. I can't recall if I was even aware of The Facts of Life's existence in 79 and i'm guessing I was oblivious to it. I do remember the episode where they were introduced on Different Strokes though, because I watched that every week.
By the time it went to Wednesdays I believe it was airing right after Different Strokes which made it much easier to find it's audience, and it probably should've began there from the start.
And by the time when my Mom tried to forbid me to watch it, around the 2nd or 3rd season, Dynasty was airing the same night and she was glued to that so it was easy for me to watch my Facts of Life without her even caring. I'd just keep the sound low in my room lol.

Retro will say this exact same thing: It definitely should have begun there from the start! Spin-off "Empty Nest" aired right after its parent show, "The Golden Girls". Why on Earth they didn't follow DS with its spin-off of FOL, we'll never know!

Looking at Wikipedia's 1979 TV schedule for Friday nights, it shows Facts of Life on at 8:30pm in summer between "various programming", which i'm assuming to mean "not a hit show" and then the following spring of '80 when it returned it was behind "Here's Boomer", which I admit I actually watched and liked.
So perhaps I did see some of season one because I know for a fact I tuned into Boomer's whole short series run. (It was about a dog who saved people or some such nonsense...but hey, I was only 10 and had a dog that looked like Boomer at the time lol)
Premiering it on Friday nights alongside no other hits really is a head scratcher. Thank God they had sense enough to right that ship and put it to Wednesday or it would've probably been canned after the first season.

You know me too well, '80s. Yes, many spin-offs air right after their parent show: it helps the spin-off develop an audience. But this was a network which though Pink Lady and Jeff was a good idea.
Why on Earth they didn't follow DS with its spin-off of FOL, we'll never know!
Oh, we know: at the time, NBC was being run by network executives who couldn't count to seven, and who didn't bother to take promotional photos for the show until after the first four episodes had already aired.

That is exactly how I had to watch Married with Children in the late 1980s. It was too controversial for my mom to allow me to watch.

Yeah, I just grew up too innocently with the show, assuming anyone who heard about it knew what is about. I just assumed it was universal, lol.
But now knowing some folks were all:

I know, I just can't believe anyone was around that didn't know it was wholesome Mrs. Garrettness, lol. Cable television had yet to explode like it did, and when most anyone was watching TV, it was the few major networks. So I find it so funny that some people wouldn't have realized what the show really was, lol.

A lot of people wanted to judge the show without, you know, actually watching it. Unfortunately, there were a lot of ignorant people in the 1980's. Even more so in 2019!

And I was never even told WHY I couldn't watch it. I just remember my Mom saying to me angrily "I don't want you watching that show" and I knew it was harmless and no racier than "Three's Company" which had a LOT of sexual innuendo, but it was ok for me to watch that each week with no problems!
I never did ask her about it and she's since passed away, so my only logical guess would have to be because it was a show about all teenage girls and I was a boy so I shouldn't be privy to their "facts of life". I dunno, but back then I never saw the show as being a "girls show" or any different or controversial from all the other sitcoms that was on at the time...and I watched them all back then. I pretty much grew up on 70's/80's sitcoms.

I watched shows that originally aired on a network which went under in 1956. I wasn't watching in 1956!
Sadly, most of those old DuMont shows weren't preserved. I've watched as many as I've been able to find, but there aren't very many.

Good point about Three's Company being far racier than FOL. My grandparents even watched TC... and also Family Feud with Richard Dawson, who would insist on kissing every woman on that show. By today's standards... WTF!?

And always directly on the lips. It is shocking to see by today's standards. I'm sure that show was responsible for spreading herpes/cold sores to thousands of women across America.
Wouldn't it have been funny if just once a woman backed away in disgust saying "I don't think so!"

Well, on "Mama's Family" Mama was disgusted by the thought of Richard Dawson kissing her. And when he approached her at the show's beginning, she closed her eyes, leaned forward and jutted her chin out, and braced herself. He said, "Now, you're a little over-anxious, aren't ya, Thelma?", and she said, "I just wanna get it over with."
Well, then he gave her a soft little peck on the cheek, and she said with a little sheepish smile, "Oh, well that wasn't half bad!" and he said, "Hey, that was pretty good for me, too."
One of Vicki Lawrence's favorite season 1 episodes. :)

Oh, please do yourself a favor and get the complete box set. It has over 10 hours of bonus material (!!). Most of the bonuses are spread out over the individual sets as well, but the box set also includes an interview with Vicki and Carol together, and a souvenir "family album" book.
Highlights of included bonuses are cast interviews, a cast round table, the television movie "Eunice" which aired in March 1982 and landed in the top 10 programs of that week, and the original NBC introductions by Harvey Korman as "Alistair Quince" spoofing "Masterpiece Theater"!

There seems to be a couple of complete series releases put out. The latest one says copyright 2019 on the back of the box so it was released just this year. That the one recommended? Here's the Ebay link with front and back box pictures. Not a bad price for the whole series either.

That's the older version which is odd because why would a 2014 version have more features than a 2019 version? It's weird. And I noticed that the 2019 version comes with Closed Captions and Subtitles according to the back of the box, whereas the 2014 version with all the bonuses doesn't.
It makes no sense, and I need the ones with CC so i'd have to get the 2019 one with just the episodes only.

Actually, it's not that weird. My assumption is after they released it with all the bells and whistles first, they then put together a set of all the episodes only, sans bonuses, to sell at a lower price point. Companies sometimes do that to rake in more $ first, then they "settle" to trim things for future releases.

Yeah, that is is unfortunate that it doesn't have the CC. I would gladly CC the complete collection if they would ask me to.
Well, in the meantime, I just searched "mama's family bonus features" at YouTube, and already saw a few of them up there. :)

And the only place i'm seeing this 2019 release is on that one E bay listing. Every search I do online brings up only the 2014 version, so i'm wondering if it's a legitimate studio release, but the back of the box looks genuine. Even Warner Bros. doesn't show the later release on their own website and the box says it's their release.
I bought The Jeffersons complete series on E bay last year for $49 where it was selling on Amazon for $100...well, when I got it, every damn disc froze and skipped, but the box looked genuine, so i'm wondering if this newer release if the same thing. Bootleg?

It very well could be, cfr. Like you, I saw how genuine the back of the box looked at the bottom, with all of the citations/logos. But you're right, it could be just a very well-made bootleg.

I'll stay away from it then. It's scary how well made and genuine looking these bootleg copies can be. I'm certain my Jeffersons set is a bootleg but the box and cases look flawless and it even came with a booklet too, just like the studio release.
But every single disc freezes and skips and only when it gets to the last few episodes of each disc, which tells me it was probably recorded from the original onto bad DVD's.
cfr1970 02-15-2019, 02:44 PM Ah!! Seems it IS a legitimate copy!! Right here on this page of Sitcoms Online it's showing the 2/5 release of Mama's Family-Seasons 1-6-The Complete Series. All I had to do was scroll up to see it in the blue links and if it's listed here it has to be legit. It even gives a link to the WB page to order it, but no image or descriptions.
In any case, I think i'll take a chance & get it. Seems to be real.

Oh, wow, well, good! :) I just hadn't heard of that release before (and obviously, if it's 2019, it's very, very new, lol).
Glad to hear you'll have all 135 MF episodes for big laughs! :D

I'll miss the bonuses, but i'll just catch what they have over on You Tube. As long as I get all the episodes, i'm happy. MF is another show I haven't seen since it originally aired back in the 80's. I don't think i've ever seen it played on any of the over the air broadcast classic channels which is a shame.

Really?? Wow...I obsessively taped it off local syndication in the '90s (lol), then later in the '90s/'00s it went to USA where it was for quite a while, and then after an absence of a handful of years off the airwaves it's now currently on two stations, LOGO and ME-TV. :)

I used to get ME-TV with my rabbit ear antenna till one day it just stopped pulling it in a few years ago. I probably need a stronger antenna, but i'd rather spend my money on dvd's.
The only ones I pull in now are AntennaTV, Decades, Cozi and Laff networks....and Buzzr for my game show fix.
RetroGuy2000 02-15-2019, 06:49 PM And always directly on the lips. It is shocking to see by today's standards. I'm sure that show was responsible for spreading herpes/cold sores to thousands of women across America.
Wouldn't it have been funny if just once a woman backed away in disgust saying "I don't think so!"
:brent YES! OMG, yes!
Schmoopie 06-08-2019, 06:46 PM I don't really remember when I first started watching it but most likely when it started coming on. I could relate to the cast because they were all around my age. I don't think I ever watched it on a regular basis but I do remember some of the episodes.
'80sSitcoms 06-26-2019, 11:07 AM Bumping this, since it's newer and longer than a similar older thread.
80s Dude 12-25-2019, 06:45 PM I saw the very first episode when it aired. Watched Different Strokes and had a crush on Kimberly (who was one month younger than me), then I saw Facts of Life and dumped Kimberly for Cindy and Miss Mohoney.

It's so cool that you saw the first episode as it aired!
Miss Mahoney's hair was too big for me to ever get into her.

Miss Mahoney's hair was before it's time. By the time 1984 hit, it would have fit in.

I remember "Joannie Cunningham" was sporting a similar tight-curled perm around the same era. Definitely a hair don't!

Some people are saying that 80s hair is coming back. I've seen a few mullets popping up lately. Beiing a high schooler and university student in the 80s, the 80s hair is something I don't miss.

Let's have some more stories!
(and I realize the posts above make me sound catty and rude, but the thread I was trying to bury was one by me that was similar, and it was older with not as many responses. So this newer, longer, more current thread is better )
valentina warner 04-14-2020, 05:53 PM Okay here it goes: while i was growing up, in wasn't FOL or any other TV shows my parents forbade me to watch, but SOAP OPERAS! (in their opinion it would brainwashed me)
The worst part is: i loved SOAP OPERAS of any kind cos it got me so hooked, and since it was a forbidden fruit i was even more tempted!!!!
Has anyone else had the same experience as me on that one?
'80sSitcoms 04-14-2020, 08:03 PM No valentina, but I have to say that is amusing!
