View Full Version : Most Baffling Cancellations
Not things you necessarily liked personally, but things that seemed so popular and/profitable you don’t see how anyone could cancel them (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/ScrewedByTheNetwork). Think about it like this, usually when a show gets cancelled it either just dies or gets picked up my a lesser channel.

Mama’s Family: should’ve went at least 1 more season

No. The Jeffersons had done just about everything they could've with stories and the characters at that point so it was time for it to end but I was sad to see it end and I did miss the show after it was gone. And Pee Wee's Playhouse was just garbage.

DeadlyToolTime 01-19-2019, 10:23 PM 3rd Rock from the Sun. The series finale was great, but every episode from season 6 felt rushed. They could've at least given it a 7th season.
My Name Is Earl seemed like it was doing great up till it's cancellation. It really deserved a season 5 and could of gone on awhile longer.

Not puzzling at all. Melissa McCarthy became a bona fide movie star and wanted out. I can't blame her.

 Too funny. No I'd call it a fact. Pee Wee Herman (or Paul Reubens) is just creepy.

What caused its cancellation was being an aging, unowned show that CBS did not make money off anymore, it was a midseason utility player the last few seasons.

James28 01-22-2019, 11:48 AM Mannix.
It was ranked #20 for the 1974-75 season (its eighth), after being off the Top 30 for seasons 6 and 7, and for years I was so desperate to find a reason for its cancellation.
I asked on this thread (https://sitcomsonline.com/boards/showthread.php?t=325262) a few years ago. Apparently, Paramount Television (the producer of Mannix) made a deal with ABC Network to air reruns of the series on late nights while new episodes continued to air on CBS. CBS was not happy about this, and they ended up abruptly cancelling Mannix in retaliation.
Yong Fang 01-24-2019, 10:30 PM I don’t know about “baffling” but the Sally Struthers AITF spin-off Gloria actually was #18 in the ratings in 1982-1983 TV season and was not renewed. I think most people think the show was a low watched failure. Maybe CBS didn’t see a future in the show, and really by the mid 1980’s you couldn’t blame them.
Supposedly there was a black dog named Archie. Carroll O’Connor didn’t like that supposedly.
TV Guy 01-24-2019, 11:24 PM In 1982-83, 60 Minutes was the #1 show on TV. Archie Bunker and Gloria followed 60 Minutes on CBS and they didn’t even rank in the top 10. They dropped too much of the lead in. And in midseason, the two shows were moved to Monday and they dropped like a rock in the ratings without 60 Minutes.

Yeah, the dog was gay too.
