View Full Version : Antenna TV taken off my Spectrum cable
Just went to see what was on and found these notices. Since I don’t care all that much, haven’t bothered to check if it’s still available over the air with an antenna/converter box or if that’s gone too.

treky 01-03-2019, 02:57 AM don't sweat it; the way they crunch the credits you're not missing very much.
It's a shame they do that; Antenna TV used to be one of the best of the "retro-channels".

Yeah, it's off here too!! I just switched the channel to Antenna and got those notices too!! Oh No!!! :(
Well, hope it comes back, but at least I got to watch lots of old shows again there and lately I haven't been watching it as much as I used to! ;)
I'd be fit to be tied if they took it off when One day at a time was on before the box set was released ! If I couldn't see my Max I'd jump off a bridge!!:(

I don't mind the credit crunches, but they play way too many animal abuse commercials ! :( And as I said before I did get to see lots of shows and lately what they have on now I've seen them all mostly , glad it didn't happen before when I was just seeing the shows after not seeing them in a long time! ;)
icecream 01-03-2019, 03:55 AM I am very glad I don't have Spectrum cable!! I just checked my Antenna station and it is still there.
That's a shame for everyone who had it. If I was up in Maine for vacation and we didn't have the channel, I would be not happy either.
stevea 01-03-2019, 08:32 AM Don't blame the cable company--it's a dispute between Tribune and Fox/CBS stations. Says that right on the screen shot.
favoriteshow 01-03-2019, 10:43 AM Don't blame the cable company--it's a dispute between Tribune and Fox/CBS stations. Says that right on the screen shot.
It's a dispute between Spectrum and Tribune. Not Tribune vs. CBS and/or FOX.
From the OP's location - NYC, Tribune owns WPIX which is not aligned with one of the major 4 networks, but Tribune is asking for likely higher retransmission fees in markets where it is the affiliate of one of the major 4 networks. But WPIX, and subchannels of WPIX, are getting grouped in the negotiations and carriage.
The OP might have luck just using an rabbit ear antenna and doing a scan and be able to watch Antenna TV over the air.
https://www.fcc.gov/media/engineering/dtvmaps
WPIX is listed as a High VHF station. The VHF stations though are hard to pick up reliably with indoor antennas. Low VHF is even harder.
Anyways, the dispute is likely temporary. Spectrum can't go without coverage of one of the major broadcast networks in it's other markets.
1960'sTVfan 01-03-2019, 11:19 AM I also have Spectrum cable, I just checked Antenna TV and it's fine at this time, a Dennis The Menace episode is currently on.
Hmm... so maybe it's only certain areas/markets then.
Bonniegirl 01-03-2019, 12:05 PM Hmm... so maybe it's only certain areas/markets then.
Yeah, my Antenna is run by KCOP Los Angeles and we are off. And Opus is NY . Maybe the larger city areas are being targeted! :(
1960'sTVfan 01-03-2019, 12:16 PM That's what it seems like, only affecting certain areas. Probably some sort of fee dispute that started with the first of the year. It is usually a temporary situation and then the channel comes back again after a few days.
Merry24 01-03-2019, 12:55 PM As of now in my area we still have Antenna TV BUT WGN America is gone.
Please correct me if I’m wrong I thought Tribune is no longer associated with Antenna TV?
Perhaps this is why TVLand is possibly Returning to its roots?
Yeah, my Antenna is run by KCOP Los Angeles and we are off. And Opus is NY . Maybe the larger city areas are being targeted! :(
Are the smaller areas being targeted as well?
Bonniegirl 01-03-2019, 01:37 PM Are the smaller areas being targeted as well?
Not sure! I was just speculating cause Opus and I are in big cities and Retro and Catsrule are in smaller towns in the Midwest! ;)
Merry24 01-03-2019, 01:40 PM Just talked to my family who lives in another area they lost WGN America & Antenna TV and Fox stations.
It’s weird Spectrum is saying nobody watches WGN anyways. I’m thinking than why carry it? They are saying that Antenna TV Shows can be watched free on the internet. With that being said I’m okay with loosing WGN America. Although if I loose Antenna TV I would be upset.
Bonniegirl 01-03-2019, 01:41 PM Are the smaller areas being targeted as well?
Not sure? I was just speculating cause Opus and I are in two of the biggest cities in the country and Retro and Catsrule are in smaller towns! ;)
Bonniegirl 01-03-2019, 01:49 PM Well for me the shows I like are on at times I am at work anyway.;) Except for Hazel in the morning. I'll miss her but lots of times I watch Beaver on Me at that time if I'm up! On my days off I'll miss Alice ( but I've already seen them so much anyway) , and Archie Bunker's place ( haven't seen all of them) :(and Gimme a break, I have the Jonathan years DVD so that is cool.;) So the other stuff that is on when I'm home doesn't interest me much anyway!!
No Howie on Paul Lynde on a rare Saturday off though! :( And I will miss the Partridge family and Barney Miller eps. That Michael Lembeck is on!! :(
1960'sTVfan 01-03-2019, 01:50 PM I'm still getting Antenna TV but WGN America has been locked/taken off. I don't care about WGN America because I don't watch that channel, but I hope Antenna TV stays on.
I wish my Spectrum Cable carried Antenna TV. It must be a local station that opted for it instead of another diginet. I'm only getting that message on WGN America and nothing else. Which sucks because I couldn't get my nightly dose of Married With...Children.
Not sure? I was just speculating cause Opus and I are in two of the biggest cities in the country and Retro and Catsrule are in smaller towns! ;)
Just curious to know.;)
WGN America also isn't available on Comcast in select areas/markets either.
So a little research shows it's Spectrum fighting with Tribune in 24 markets.....
As many as 24 markets are affected by the TV blackout, including Denver, Houston, New York, Los Angeles and St. Louis. Tribune pulled its signal at 5 p.m. Eastern time after negotiations stalled.

1960'sTVfan 01-03-2019, 02:14 PM I subscribe to cable TV but I have to say that the service is a total rip off. My monthly bill is now double compared to what I paid six years ago, because the company hammers me every year with a rate increase. And then they pull channels off the air claiming that the programming fee is too expensive, but they have no problem hammering their customers with annual rate increases. As I said, it's a total rip off.
I would consider cancelling the cable service and go with a dish/satellite, but that is a rip off too.

Luckily I still have my Antenna TV but my interest is mostly on the Weekends with Head of the Class, Hogan Family, Sabrina the Teenage Witch, Becker, My Two Dads, etc. I would love to see Gimme a Break replaced on Weekdays with one of those.

This is the part that hurts me most. WPIX is the CW affiliate here, and I watch a lot of CW primetime shows. But they don't come back new till Jan.15, so this best be settled by then.
And yes, I just checked and PIX and AntennaTV are still there over the air.
icecream 01-03-2019, 03:21 PM Not sure! I was just speculating cause Opus and I are in big cities and Retro and Catsrule are in smaller towns in the Midwest! ;)That depends on your definition of small town. Fort Wayne is definitely smaller than giant places like LA, New York, and Chicago, but it is the 2nd largest city in Indiana after Indy. And there are definitely places more rural than here that are in the middle of nowhere. I don't think this Antenna/WGN/Tribune thing has to do with location though but cable provider. I have Comcast/Xfinity and all the issues that started yesterday are coming from Spectrum cable company. I don't know if Spectrum is even carried in Fort Wayne.
I'm in CT. No Antenna or WPIX. A few others are also missing.
I'm still getting Antenna TV but WGN America has been locked/taken off. I don't care about WGN America because I don't watch that channel, but I hope Antenna TV stays on.
WGNA was good when they carried the Cubs games.

1960'sTVfan 01-03-2019, 04:30 PM WGNA was good when they carried the Cubs games.
It was good for Cubs fans but I'm not a Cubs fan.
In 2012 when I relocated from Chicago to southern Indiana, after my cable service was connected I would watch WGN America to see the WGN news and stay informed as to what's happening in Chicago. Then a year or two later, the imbecile in charge of programming at WGN America decided to remove the newscasts and I haven't watched the channel since.
Looks like Maine isn’t on the list.

Svenfan1234 01-03-2019, 07:12 PM WXMI Grand Rapids is on the list, good thing I don't have Spectrum.
stevea 01-03-2019, 07:50 PM These fees are ridiculous. Networks charge affiliates a fee, and affiliates charge the cable company a fee. Then these fees are passed on to the cable customer. Undoubtedly a profit is added at each step, and on top of all this the cable customer has to put up with ads.
If you can believe Charter, Tribune wants to more than double its rates. That sounds ridiculous, if true.
Oh, and I'm sure Charter will lower its rates until the channels are not dark. Yeah, right.

Yup, doesn’t affect over the air, only some Spectrum markets. I’ve lost WPIX, Antenna, WGNA in NYC, and if someone wants to tell me some other Tribune stations, I’m sure those are gone too.

I was reading about some past Tribune/provider disputes on their Wikipedia page
- April 2012 they were off Direct TV for 4 days
-August 2012 they were off Cablevision for 2 months
-June 2016 they were off DISH for 3 months
Details here:

Hope the channels come back soon.

2-3 months is a long time to be off the air.
But with the Superbowl on CBS this year, and Tribune having CBS affiliations in markets where Spectrum is the cable provider, I'd think it would be restored soon.
Echostar/Dish/billionaire Charlie Ergen (all the same to me) was originally one of the first to dispute when costs of channels would get out of hand. Channels would get dropped. There was one channel (Romance Classics - now WE) that was shared with IFC on the same channel, and because of costs, Dish didn't want to split them.
When I signed with Dish many years ago and joined a forum, it was a shock to many when channels would get temporarily dropped or dropped around this time of year. Now, it's a norm across many providers.
cfr1970 01-04-2019, 01:50 PM Wouldn't getting a cheap antenna solve the problem? I have a $10 pair of rabbit ears connected to my TV and that's it.
Spectrum keeps sending me ads to sign up for their $21.99/month TV package, but i'll never do it because then you have to go through them to watch the channels and if they cancel a channel like happened in this thread, then you're screwed. Not so with an over the air antenna, but of course you are limited to your channel choices then, so it's a choice of which is more important.
I only get about 15 channels, (including Antenna TV) but that's all I need.

Worth trying... I bought an Insignia brand rabbit ear antenna from Best Buy. I like it better than ones from Walmart and more expensive antennas. The poles (when adjusted) help pick up the VHF stations.
Enter zip code here to see station availability:
https://www.fcc.gov/media/engineering/dtvmaps
In the Philly area, it's difficult to pull in WPVI 6 (ABC/Laff/LiveWell) reliably with indoor antenna and WDPN 2 (MeTV/Decades/some others). The low VHF stations are hard to pick up. A rabbit ear does work for WHYY 12 (PBS/WHHY2/PBS Kids) (Hi VHF), but even that is unreliable depending on one's location.
An outdoor antenna is best way to go if one can get it.
For streaming, there is
locast.org (services New York and Philly). Includes WPIX for New York, but I don't think it has the subchannel of WPIX/Antenna TV. Geolocation limits that one has to be in the NYC DMA to receive the New York local channels.
I'm on the locast website at the moment, and you can only watch the channels in your area. Not the others.

In most of South Jersey you'd need to have a rooftop antenna to pull in the Philly stations.

I'm in South Jersey but within 20 miles of Philly. The UHF stations can come in well with an amplified indoor antenna, but I don't know if that's true in Atlantic County and unlikely in Cape May.
What's annoying to me is both WPHL and WPSG carry Comet TV. Seems like unnecessary duplication. I guess that I don't care for Comet and Charge but those are a couple that are easy to get.
And then Decades ( a channel that I want to have) moved from KYW (CBS) for Start TV, to WDPN, which pretty much requires a rooftop antenna and one suitable for VHF.
Comcast has started carrying Decades from WDPN though, while Fios hasn't yet. Comcast has a Xfinity Instant TV for $20/mo which is only broadcast channels, MusicChoice and 20 hours of cloud DVR. But one must take at least Xfinity Internet. i.e. One can't take Fios for internet with Xfinity Instant TV. Not that anyone would do that.
AMackII 01-05-2019, 10:16 AM Still Waiting Antenna TV to reappear on Spectrum Cable here in the STL that way the Tribune Fair Deal will be set ASAP.
LUNCH 01-05-2019, 02:29 PM I would still go with trying an antenna as a few people mentioned already. You may be able to get the channel that way and not have to wait out another one of those stupid disputes.
Well, the channels here are still blocked but still listed on the on screen guide. I remember once CBS got pulled here in a dispute with whoever and they eventually replaced it with STARZ for a while (which was actually pretty cool. CBS still there over the air AND free no commercial unedited movies on the cable).

Yeah CBS was pulled here also for a while about 5 years ago! It was strange, being it is a major station and all!!
Update- they’re both still acting like petulant 5 year olds
(I’d really like the CW back by Jan. 15.....)
The funny part (by funny I mean sad) is they’re fighting over channels available for free over the air.
