Monday I watched "Bub Leaves Home" on both the TV Land and the ME TV version. First, I'd like to say this is one of the best episodes of the entire series. It's not that it's bowl over funny, but more than that it's the most real of the episodes. This was a golden moment too for Bill Frawley to shine in an episode that was concerned about him(Bub) and his situation in life. Lots of close-ups of Frawley as he thinks out loud to the audience what's going on and what he thinks about it. I found this episode to be very involving and I didn't mind at all watching it twice.
Now for a comparison, the TV Land still wins hands down due to the original music used BUT the ME TV version also was a winner as it was edited more effectively than the TV Land version. I watched the TV Land version first and in it they made several comments thru out the episode that didn't compute with what was seen. Then when I watched the ME TV version I saw what the characters were commenting about and referring to. TV Land had cut out these crucial set up scenes to what was talked and acted on about later, ME TV left these crucial set-up scenes in tact. Even as I watched the TV Land version I thought to myself that they must have cut something out cause it didn't make sense and sure enough ME TV showed what was cut. For instance in the TV Land version Bub tries to ride on a scooter to prove to himself that he can do it as good as the visiting aunt. But he falls over and is helped up by Rob. This ruins Bub's thoughts of being still vibrant. But you don't know why Bub chose the scooter to ride on, as the earlier scenes of the kids and the visiting aunt riding the scooter without a problem was cut out of the TV Land version. Just another crucial set up scene cut from TV Land's version.
ME TV included the very opening scenes that were later referred to when Steve enters the kitchen in the TV Land version, without seeing ME TV you wouldn't know what Steve was talking about.
The ME TV version did cut out the scene of Bub packing his suitcase in Mike's room as he talks to Rob about moving.
When I heard my favorite harmonica background music in the TV Land version I thought I wonder what ME TV will replace this with. Sure enough it was gone BUT what they replaced it with was a different harmonica background, I have to admit it wasn't a bad replacement, still the original was better but this was a good 2nd choice.
TV Land cut out another pretty essential early scene as Bub sits in the bus station he listens in on two old timers talking about the same situation Bub's in, this scene was gone and helped to explain Bub's feelings. A later scene with these same two geezers commiserating was included though in the TV Land version, that was good they should have left in the first part though.
All in all an excellent episode that I didn't even mind watching twice, not just for research value but to enjoy.:)
