View Full Version : Paul Lynde Show marathon New Years Eve Antenna TV
1960'sTVfan 12-29-2018, 11:14 PM Well it looks like Antenna TV may indeed have added two more Paul Lynde episodes to their inventory, which would increase the total number of episodes they have from 17 to 19, still 7 episodes missing.
I say this because I just looked at my cable TV listings/schedule for Antenna TV, and according to that, the episodes "Whose Lib" and "Meet Aunt Charlotte" are scheduled to air during the New Years Eve marathon. If this information on my cable listings is correct, these two episodes would be new, Antenna hasn't shown these two before.

Awesome!! I hope to catch some Paul Lynde eps. Very cool they are having this marathon !:) Something different !!:)
OH Nuts! 12-29-2018, 11:19 PM This should be an interesting and entertaining bit of nostalgia....looking forward to it!

Yeah! I have only seen a few eps. and liked them.:) I don't get to watch it much as it interferes with my work schedule. So I'm really hoping to catch this marathon !! ;)

I saw a couple on You Tube and liked them. He can truly have a wicked sense of humor!
1960'sTVfan 12-29-2018, 11:35 PM I wasn't planning to record the marathon but I might record it now because of the two new episodes. It seems that Antenna now has 19 episodes, 16 of them are scheduled to air during the marathon.

This mararthon should be a lot of fun!

Hi Retro Lee !! What is the exact hours this will be on ?
1960'sTVfan 12-30-2018, 12:02 AM Hi Retro Lee !! What is the exact hours this will be on ?
Howdy Bonnie , you're on the west coast so I imagine your times will be different, I'm on eastern time and for me the marathon starts at 6PM, then will be interrupted for 90 minutes at 11PM because of Johnny Carson, then the marathon resumes at 12:30AM and the last episode of the marathon airs at 3AM.
stevea 12-30-2018, 03:38 PM Yeah! I have only seen a few eps. and liked them.:) I don't get to watch it much as it interferes with my work schedule. So I'm really hoping to catch this marathon !! ;)

Do you know what time (eastern) these 2 episodes are on? I can find no episodes in my cable TV guide, nor on the Antenna site.
1960'sTVfan 12-30-2018, 04:12 PM Do you know what time (eastern) these 2 episodes are on? I can find no episodes in my cable TV guide, nor on the Antenna site.
According to my cable listings, eastern time, "Whose Lib" is scheduled for 8:30 PM and "Meet Aunt Charlotte" airs at 9 PM. Hopefully this is correct.
brtcmfn 12-30-2018, 06:34 PM According to the listings on my Channel Master DVR (Which the listings are from ROVI/TIVO)- I have recorded the show since it 1st aired and have a total of 17 episodes.
According to the listings I show- 2 episodes are not airing that previously aired:
Domestic Hastels
Medicine for Pauls ego
The 2 new episodes that never aired are:
Sexy redhead vs. Howie 8:30ET
Feminist sister 9PM ET
(These may not be the actual title of the episodes- but I took the 1st few words that were listed for each of the synopses)- so I would say based on what RetroTV already mentioned these are the new episodes that have not aired yet."Whose Lib" and "Meet Aunt Charlotte"
1960'sTVfan 12-30-2018, 07:13 PM If Antenna TV airs the episodes "Whose Lib" and "Meet Aunt Charlotte" tomorrow during the marathon, then these are the 7 missing episodes Antenna has yet to air:
#6. How to be Unhappy, Though Poor
#8. To Wed or Not to Wed
#9. Unsteady Going
#12. An Affair to Forget
#16. The Bare Facts
#18. P.S. I Loathe You
#24. Barbara Goes Home to Mother
stevea 12-30-2018, 07:30 PM It sure would have been great if Antenna had put a PL episode list in the TV Guide or on its website. In fact, for Monday and beyond, there is no episode info. for any Antenna program, in the TV Guide, or on its website (at least, none that I can find.)
brtcmfn 12-30-2018, 07:57 PM They probably have not got around to updating yet for the new month- I show episode synopses for all programs up to 1/11/19 on my EPG.
1960'sTVfan 12-31-2018, 11:14 PM Well the Paul Lynde Show marathon has been fun so far and they did air the two new episodes, Whose Lib and Meet Aunt Charlotte.
But my overall opinion of the show remains the same, it's fun to watch and a nostalgia trip back to the early 1970's, but a little of Paul Lynde goes a long way, he tends to get overbearing after awhile. Lynde is better seen in smaller doses like as Uncle Arthur in Bewitched, or when he was the center square on Hollywood Squares cracking off those one liners. His sitcom is fun but I can see why it wasn't renewed for a 2nd season.
stevea 12-31-2018, 11:19 PM There are some LOL moments, mostly his lines or when he falls into the pool. The episode that's on right now, is the worst one of the series IMO...who in their right mind caters to a criminal?
OH Nuts! 12-31-2018, 11:19 PM I agree; this show really isn’t the right vehicle for him.
1960'sTVfan 12-31-2018, 11:37 PM Another comment about this marathon, why all the animal abuse commercials? This type of commercial is depressing and doesn't belong in a sitcom marathon. Antenna TV has the worst commercials.

It was a sign of the times, early 70's , civil rights, feeling for the opressed!! The Son in law and Daughter totally remind me of something Mike Static from All in the Family would have done. The victim of the mugging feeling sympathy towards the mugger being that he wouldn't be doing that had he had a better upbringing and more opportunities in life!! ;)
To me this ep. was great! Like I saud, Totally a sign of the times with liberal hippie thinking!! Plus the ep in general was really funny I thought, campy but funny!! ;)
Bonniegirl 12-31-2018, 11:46 PM I'm liking this show, enjoying the marathon!! ; Only got to watch from 5:30 ( my time) on! So this is the 5th ep. And Howie the Son in law is a big, blonde hotty!!:) I'm liking me some Howie!!! ;)
And it was fun seeing Mrs.Garrett from Facts of life ( before FOL , I can't think of the actress's name right now , that's why I'm calling her Mrs.Garrett) as a brunette!! ;)
OH Nuts! 12-31-2018, 11:51 PM It’s a nice change of pace=but Hollywood Squares is where he really shined!

BTW I agree about the crummy ads. You're preaching to the choir on that earlier comment.

Well, I really have to say overall I do like Antenna; but I agree with you, the commercials are a real pain in the butt!
Too2muchtv 12-31-2018, 11:57 PM The best part of this show for me is seeing the reused kitchen and patio sets from Bewitched!

Yes!! Charlotte Ray !! ;):)

Totally!! All the retro channels and a lot of cable channels show the depressing commercials, but I find Antenna to be the worst!! They really over do it with the animal abuse commercials !! :(

Yeah, I agree!! That was one of the few eps. that I had seen already on a rare Saturday that I had the day off!! ;)
stevea 01-01-2019, 12:21 AM The best part of this show for me is seeing the reused kitchen and patio sets from Bewitched!
Yeah, they probably had to drag them from another soundstage. There's an audience with this show.
Bonniegirl 01-01-2019, 12:36 AM :eyes:Mmmmmmm!!!!! Howie lifting weights shirtless and in shorts!!!!!!!!!
OK guys, I think it is very possible that I like this show better than you guys do because of Howie??? :) :eyes:OK enough of my silly school girl crush babbling !!:D
1960'sTVfan 01-01-2019, 12:47 AM I think Pamelyn Ferdin is cute looking but she's too young.
1960'sTVfan 01-01-2019, 12:53 AM The brunette actress Jane Actman who has the role of Howie's wife, she's sort of hot looking.
1960'sTVfan 01-01-2019, 01:15 AM I didn't know about this until now, but just found out that Jane Actman passed away recently a few months ago on Oct. 30th. Sad to learn about that. R.I.P. Jane Actman.
stevea 01-01-2019, 08:18 AM Elizabeth Allen died in 2006. I imagine John Calvin and Pamelyn Ferdin are still with us.
1960'sTVfan 01-01-2019, 11:41 AM I didn't watch the entire marathon but saw most of it, I started getting tired around 1:30 AM so I shut it off and retired for the night. It's good that Antenna has added two more episodes, that brings the episode count to 19 with 7 episodes still missing.
I thought about recording the marathon but decided not to, if Antenna eventually acquires all 26 episodes and runs them then I will probably record. It's a fun series but I don't consider it essential viewing.
OH Nuts! 01-01-2019, 11:51 AM I only got a chance to watch a few episodes. But there are some on YouTube, although they have poor resolution.

That's sad. She wasn't old!! :( Probably in her mid 60's only?
I thought she was pretty on the Paul Lynde show, a natural beauty ! ;)

Oh yeah, she is really cute!! ;)I like that actress. She popped up in lots of shows in that era! I always liked her when I was a kid, and enjoy seeing her now ! :)A real upbeat personality!
;)
It was fun watching the marathon and seeing actors and actresses who at that time were pretty much unknown.Charlotte Ray before she was Mrs.Garett , Tom Bosley before he was Mr. Cunningham and Marcia Strassman before she was Julie Kotter! :)

Yes, Pamelyn Ferdin is cute in The Paul Lynde Show, she is upbeat and perky. I think she was around 13 years old at the time.
Watching many episodes of different TV shows, it's interesting to see the various guest stars that appear. I've seen Paul Lynde in an F Troop episode titled The Singing Mountie. I've seen Tom Bosley in a Get Smart episode titled The Farkas Fracas.
stevea 01-01-2019, 06:31 PM I recognized Pamelyn Ferdin from the Odd Couple.
There are many recognizable character actors on PL. One that immediately comes to mind is David White, Larry Tate from Bewitched.
One thing you can say about the Paul Simms character: nothing is right with his life, and his martinis solve everything.
Yong Fang 01-02-2019, 01:15 AM Love Paul Lynde.
Bruce Villanch said it best about Paul Lynde and his talents, (you can find this on YouTube) that Lynde was a "flavor" in that he would walk into a show, he would "kill" (break the audience in hysterics) and leave. Lynde was not a headliner. He was too eccentric for that.
Even as the star of Hollywood Squares, Paul Lynde was one of ten celebrities (using the term slightly loosely), since Lynde was the center square, he was always picked, and was the funniest one, but there were again, nine other people on the show too. Lynde was basically the first among equals than anything.
Paul Lynde was just not believable in this show. Even in what, 1972, it is fairly obvious that he was very gay and him being married with a couple of kids and a wife was just implausable to say the least, and what I said above about what Villanch said about Lynde being a flavor of the show and not a headliner.
That was a problem ABC had with Lynde, they signed a huge contract with Lynde and didnt know what to do with him, and one thing they did was the Paul Lynde Halloween Special. That show was AWFUL, but a wonderful kind of awful, so bad it was good. But ABC were suckers on that and while it probably hurt Paul's feelings, he got paid whether ABC could find stuff for him to do or not.

I agree, that was the other problem with this show, along with the fact that Paul Lynde's routine gets overbearing after awhile. He is better in a reduced role/supporting character. Having the lead role in his own sitcom, there are funny moments but overall it just didn't go over too well.
After The Paul Lynde Show was cancelled, ABC re-vamped the Temperature's Rising sitcom and Lynde was given a part in the show, but then that series ended up being cancelled too.
Duster76 01-02-2019, 09:14 PM I don't think Lynde's gayness (for lack of a better term) was the issue, RetroTVfan's comments are more on target. Lynde's acerbic personality gets exhausting in a half hour format that centers around his character. I guess Don Rickles had the same problem, playing off of likeable/relatable lead characters Lynde and Rickles shined, in the role of MC in the world their characters inhabit they become a little obnoxious.
A big thank you to Antenna TV for running the series, I love when they do stuff like this. Even with its faults the show is much funnier than some of the other one year series Antenna ran (specifically, It's About Time, My Mother the Car, Good Morning World).
Lynde show featured great guest stars, a real who's who in 60's 70's and 80's TV,
Bernie Kopell
Ray Walston (he played a Japanese businessman)
Mabel Albertson
David White
Charlotte Rae
Tom Bosley Who reacted when at the mention of an arrest in Milwaukee
Roger Bowen
Elaine Giftos
The above is just a partial list.

Yes, he seems eternally irritated by EVERYTHING and everyone.
As far as the gayness thing goes, there are a few comments he makes here and there that pertain to that--I'm betting they went right over the ABC censor's head.

This is true. Paul Lynde Show, including it's faults, is funnier than the other three shows you mentioned. I'm glad that Antenna TV had the marathon, it was a fun way to bring in the new year.
Svenfan1234 01-02-2019, 10:31 PM One question I have: are the episodes edited or full length versions?
1960'sTVfan 01-02-2019, 10:35 PM One question I have: are the episodes edited or full length versions?
As far as I can tell, it looks like Antenna runs them uncut. If they aren't uncut, then they are close to uncut. If anything is missing it isn't much.
1960'sTVfan 01-07-2019, 10:56 AM Here's something interesting: The Paul Lynde Show actually had it's origins ten years prior in 1962 when the unsold TV pilot "Howie" was filmed. The ratings for The Dick Van Dyke Show in it's first season weren't that good, and if that series had been cancelled, it seems that "Howie" might have been chosen to replace it. The pilot for "Howie" is currently on You Tube but it's downloaded in four parts:

icecream 01-07-2019, 12:00 PM Oh my. CBS made a wise move sticking with The Dick Van Dyke Show. Classic TV might not have been the same if it had died after just one season.
stevea 01-07-2019, 03:54 PM As far as I can tell, it looks like Antenna runs them uncut. If they aren't uncut, then they are close to uncut. If anything is missing it isn't much.
They're close to uncut. They vary between 23 and 24 minutes. There may be an opening scene they cut.
If you watch the Antenna episodes closely the color changes right before breaks sometimes. IMO that's restored footage. It was common to cut a few seconds before the break on old syndication episodes.

Maybe Antenna airs the shows uncut but they are time sped. That would explain the 23-24 minute run time.
stevea 01-08-2019, 10:55 PM The time shifting thing hadn't occurred to me, but that's a good possibility. I know MeTV does it, for sure--never thought about Antenna.
In any event I have to give Antenna a lot of credit for picking up short run shows like this and Lotsa Luck. I hope they do more of it.

Antenna's airings of Joey Bishop have always been edited, but now the episodes have 8 minutes of commercials when before there were 7 minutes of commercials. No additional edits were made to the episodes, which means they have been time sped so an extra minute of commercial time can be fit in.
With The Paul Lynde Show, it looks like Antenna runs it uncut but if the run time is 23-24 minutes, this would indicate these episodes are time sped also.
I would like to see Antenna add the Temperature's Rising sitcom to their lineup. Also a few other one season sitcoms from the 60's like Hey Landlord and The Cara Williams Show, or He & She with Richard Benjamin and Paula Prentiss.
stevea 01-09-2019, 11:31 AM Yes, I've noticed the extra minute of junk ads on Antenna.
stevea 01-09-2019, 03:37 PM No, but if you copy the show on the DVD recorder and edit out the commercials, you see the total time. The way you describe it would definitely not be enjoyable!
1960'sTVfan 01-09-2019, 05:12 PM Here's something interesting I just discovered: four years prior to her part on The Paul Lynde Show, Pamelyn Ferdin had the role of the Bumsteads' young daughter in the short lived, 1968 version of the Blondie sitcom. How about that.
LUNCH 01-16-2019, 03:50 PM I had never seen The Paul Lynde show until Antenna started airing it.I like it and find the show pleasant and entertaining.Until a few years ago I had never even heard of the show and had wondered why Paul Lynde never had his own show.Well I was wrong,he did.I think if it was not for the very tough competition between the 3 networks at the time the show could have run a few extra seasons.
stevea 01-16-2019, 06:39 PM I'd never heard of it either. There were a few clunker episodes, sure, but I think it deserved more seasons.

Very cool!! I didn't even know there was a 1968 version of Blondie!! :eek:I would love to see that!! ;)Who else was in it??:)
1960'sTVfan 01-16-2019, 06:48 PM I knew about this show but hadn't seen it since it's original run in 1972-73. The show has it's flaws but overall it's fun and it has a retro/early 1970's vibe. I watch no more than 2 or 3 episodes at a time because Paul Lynde starts to get overbearing after awhile.
LUNCH 01-17-2019, 01:57 PM ^I also like the early 1970s atmosphere. Some people make fun of 1970s clothes, decor etc.But overall I love the 1970s look and atmosphere in general.Always have.It was colorful and upbeat. So much better than the sterile look etc. of the 21st century.

I would also like to see it.I've heard about the show but I have never seen it either.Maybe Antenna TV or even MeTV will give it a run. Those channels should really consider showing more of these types of lesser known shows.

The 1968 version of Blondie has only 13 or 14 episodes so it wasn't on the air very long. The main actors were:
Will Hutchins as Dagwood
Patricia Harty as Blondie
Peter Robbins as Alexander
Pamelyn Ferdin as Cookie
Jim Backus as Mr. Dithers
I would like to see these episodes too but I imagine the chances are fairly slim. As far as I know, this series is currently considered lost unless the episodes turn up somewhere and someone releases them.
You may have seen it already, but closest I could come to finding Blondie '68 is the opening credits

I agree, I cannot watch today's TV shows. I don't like how the people act and don't like how the shows look. Very unappealing, very unattractive.
Heenan Fan 01-17-2019, 10:07 PM Well, if it's one thing I've learned in the last month, is that Paul Lynde is a bona fide Superstar here. Damn! Paul is great, but I'm not a fan of his sitcom much. I think most people like it because it is rare, it probably never got the syndication play it deserved.
I had no idea Paul was so revered.

Bonniegirl 01-17-2019, 10:53 PM I would also like to see it.I've heard about the show but I have never seen it either.Maybe Antenna TV or even MeTV will give it a run. Those channels should really consider showing more of these types of lesser known shows.
Totally agree!! Would love if one of them were to run Blondie or other fun ,short run shows!! ;)
Bonniegirl 01-17-2019, 10:57 PM The 1968 version of Blondie has only 13 or 14 episodes so it wasn't on the air very long. The main actors were:
Will Hutchins as Dagwood
Patricia Harty as Blondie
Peter Robbins as Alexander
Pamelyn Ferdin as Cookie
Jim Backus as Mr. Dithers
I would like to see these episodes too but I imagine the chances are fairly slim. As far as I know, this series is currently considered lost unless the episodes turn up somewhere and someone releases them.
Jim Backus would make a really great Mr.Dithers !! ;)
1960'sTVfan 01-18-2019, 12:12 AM Here is a 10 minute promo clip of the 1968 Blondie series which at least gives a glimpse as to what the show was like:

I'd like to see an episode or two of the approx. 1970 Danny Thomas sitcom, Make Room For Granddaddy. I've read it was pretty bad, but I'd like to see for myself. Not much on Youtube, IIRC.
1960'sTVfan 01-18-2019, 10:40 AM Well, if it's one thing I've learned in the last month, is that Paul Lynde is a bona fide Superstar here. Damn! Paul is great, but I'm not a fan of his sitcom much. I think most people like it because it is rare, it probably never got the syndication play it deserved.
I had no idea Paul was so revered.
I agree that some of the interest here for The Paul Lynde Show is because it basically hadn't been seen since it's original run, at least that's how long it's been since I've last seen it. I also agree that it isn't the greatest show but it has it's fun moments. Worth watching for a fun retro trip back to the early 1970's. :)
I would like to see Antenna add the Temperature's Rising sitcom to their lineup .
There are about 20 of those on YouTube. Have you seen them lately? How do they hold up?

stevea 01-18-2019, 06:33 PM One thing interesting to me is that it was probably the only multi cam Screen Gems sitcom. For that format the sets were quite good, even including a real pool. There weren't too many multi cam sitcoms shot on film during that time...Odd Couple, the MTM sitcoms, Garry Marshall's sitcoms in the mid 70s. Many others shot on videotape (not sure why...needed to save money??)

How about the 1957 version of "Blondie"? It has 26 episodes.

1957 Blondie complete series was released not too long ago on DVD by the ClassicFlix studio. As far as I know, the episodes of the 1968 series are currently considered lost.

I just watched the episode "Operation Fastball". It was fun but my initial thought was that it's weird to do a sitcom in a hospital setting. And some parts of the episode would probably be considered politically incorrect today. I still think this series would be a good fit for Antenna TV but I don't know if they would be interested or able to acquire the episodes. Maybe I will send Antenna TV a message on their website to ask about this series and see if I get a reply.

Being honest, I don’t remember this show. But there were shows like MASH, Scrubs, probably some I’m missing, so the hospital setting couldn’t be that weird.
Heck, if you go watch the original One Day At A Time pilot I posted,

Ann was a nurse, so some of it would have been set in a hospital.

I suppose anything or anyplace can be used as a source for humor, but hospitals and the military are generally considered as serious subjects. I guess that's a reason why I've never really gotten into military sitcoms, the only one I can say I like is Gomer Pyle USMC.
