As I await to hear back from a source regarding Crash, I did find an old trading page from 1997 that had the Crash workprint from a site called "Terry's World of Far Out Videos?" He collected public access shows and had a few workprints. The site is dead but I was able to view it through archive wayback. Has anyone ever dealt with this guy?

I wouldn't hold my breathe for that guy who supposedly has crash. Who takes 6 months in counting to go though 15 boxes of VHS tapes? :eek: :eek: :eek:

You would think if people were serious helping people out they'd do it in a faster manner. I got boxes and boxes of VHS tapes too and i could go though all of them in one night if someone asked for some thing specific.

People like that remind me of drug dealers that purposely drag their feet cause they think they're doing YOU the favor. :confused:

That is/was Terry Gilmer out of Texas. I traded with him in 2001 or 2002. I did some digging on Usenet and it looks like he was trying to sell his collection and get out of the game in 2001. I suspect he is no longer trading.

Some people on the Google Archives said he was a good/bad trader. Even that other Justin collector whose list you sent me he had a reputation for being a good/bad trader. A lot of these old guys probably got scared off by the MPAA. Archive wayback is one of the best sites to look up these old trading sites I found the old vcdquality site which I used to use and found the Napoleon Dynamite workprint.

I did more digging around and found these workprints were released on torrent sites way back in 1998.

Terry Gilmer once claimed to be the Internet-based source for the Apocalypse Now workprint. Years ago, I connected with another trader who knew Terry's source and got a good copy from them and used it to create a high quality 3 DVD set of the workprint with an alternate audio track in which in the low audio had been enhanced. I believe that my dealing with Terry was under his swbell email address. Like you, I have tried it in recent years and it generates a bounce. I personally never had problems with Terry so can't comment on his being a bad trader.

The height of the alleged MPAA presence on Usenet was roughly 1997 through 1998. It was more pronounced on alt.videos.bootlegs. If you want to read some interesting stuff and have some time to kill, go on Google Groups and look up alt.videos.bootlegs and "Archer Troy."

I saw his post regarding Apocalypse Now. I've seen a bunch of those 3 disc sets float around and at one point I had a copy on 2 discs which I paid a few bucks for. I'm still looking around seeing how many sites I can find that could give me more info. I enjoy reading the forums as it helps me get clues on what truly did exist back then. Eventually Crash & Armageddon will surface and until then I'll keep looking around.

The newsgroups in the late 90s and early 2000s were awash with people trading and selling VHS tapes and VCDs of workprints, screeners, telesynchs, and cam jobs of movies that had yet to be released or were then only playing in theaters. I tend to think this activity, more broadly, attracted the attention of the MPAA rather than a specific person, though I suppose anything is possible.

As for fear being the reason these particular movies are unavailable, I tend to doubt it. Most of this trading was occurring 20 years ago. 20 years is a long time. People's interests wax and wane, life goes on, and a lot of the old school traders probably did too and lost interest. The mass exodus of VHS and the switch to digital formats, uploads/downloads, torrents, YouTube, and the like have all contributed to the decline in the old school trading that took place in the 90s when the majority of these prints circulated. I can't help but think some just fell through the cracks over the years.

Yes. I never did any business with him. I did see his postings on the old Cronenberg newsgroup and tried to contact him to no avail. Given his interest in Cronenberg’s films, it’s inconceivable to me that he wouldn’t still be out there on some fan forum somewhere.

I've looked all over myself with no luck. It must have been really to easy to find back in the early 90's when it starting circulating. I did get some info on a Blade (1998) workprint that it has an alternate ending. I did try contacting another guy who claimed to have Godzilla workprint and got a bounce. One wonders what else circulated way back besides the ones I'm after.
