The 91-year-old Stiller expressed his confusion during an appearance Monday night. “When people asked me about this, I would simply say it was because we were a Jewish family in the witness protection program," he said.

No, they weren't Jewish. Never any hint of that in any dialog.

Not that there would be anything wrong with that.

They were definitely meant to be Italian and not Jewish. They celebrated Festivus because Frank got sick of Christmas. There was never any mention of them celebrating Hannukah or anything like that.

I never knew why they made them be Italian? , they seemed more Jewish to me! I guessed they were supposed to be Italian by the last name but as I said they seemed more Jewish to me esp. since all three, Jerry, Estelle and Jason are all really Jewish!;)

Well, maybe Frank was an Italian Gentile, and Estelle was Jewish.
