That would make more sense. I think it would have opened the show to much more humor with Raymond and Robert be raised Jewish or cross faiths which would have been a source for more conflicts. Especially if Frank doesn’t like the Rabbi or her the Priest. It could have also opened episodes of cross culture communication. Bill Maher was raised Catholic with an observant Jewish mother at home. I think the show missed something.

Marie was a Jewish mother. Catholic is not much different. I think one is born Jewish or Catholic. For Catholics there is even a show about it now called “The Kids are Alright”. The family is Catholic by birthright and not belief. I think the disagreements between Frank and Marie could have been about the religion of the kids.

I don’t think for the 1990’s this would have been controversial.

Thoughts?

the show didn't want to get into religious and political debates, phil rosenthal said something similar, they only get into religion in two episodes and it's never really about religion, it's about two lost parents funnily trying to explain why we are here to their daughter, and frank using the usher job to get an easy ride at church, but there was never any religious meaning to it.

but the show is based on ray romano, rays italian, catholic....

But then the episode where Robert moves in with the Stipes (Jewish version of the Barones) wouldn't have made any sense. :)

The show ran 9 seasons, so I don't think it missed much by avoiding religious situations.
