Dec. 11, 2018

Netflix is teaming with the family of the late Selena Quintanilla to tell the life story of the Tejano music legend.

The streaming giant has handed out a straight-to-series order for "Selena: The Series", which it describes as a coming-of-age story. A premiere date and episode count have not yet been determined.

Also unclear is if episodes will be an hour or half-hour in length.

"Selena will always have a lasting place in music history and we feel great responsibility to do justice to her memory. With this series, viewers will finally get the full history of Selena, our family, and the impact she has had on all of our lives," Selena's sister Suzette Quintanilla said Tuesday in a statement.

"We are excited to partner with Campanario and Netflix to give fans a never-before-seen glimpse at our story and highlight why Selena will remain a legend for generations to come."

Moisés Zamora (Star, American Crime) will pen the script and executive produce the series alongside Campanario Entertainment president Jaime Davila, Rico Martinez, Suzette Quintanilla, Selena's father Abraham Quintanilla Jr. and Simran A. Singh.

Since her tragic death in 1995 the life and legacy of Selena has always been interested music fans and with the Netflix series Selena The Series it will be another entry into Selena's world. What I think will happen if Selena The Series is successful is that Netflix will make a series about Kurt Cobain and a series about Amy Winehouse and a series about Janis Joplin next. I can't figure out why people get obsessed with celebrity deaths but this series will keep Selena's spirit alive and introduce a new generation of Selena fans around the world

Before she became the Queen of Tejano Music, Selena Quintanilla was a young girl from Texas with big dreams and an even bigger voice. "Selena: The Series" explores her journey from singing small gigs to becoming the most successful female Latin artist of all time — and the years of hard work and sacrifice the Quintanilla family navigated together.

Part one of the two-part series premieres on Netflix on December 4, 2020.
