I recently rejected a job due to this. I told them I couldn't start until January because my schedule until then is booked with several obligations (I am an elected official and part of my duties including volunteering for many community events). They kept pressuring me to change my schedule (I can't) so I could work. Long story short, I found out that the reason is because they would be shortchanged and would need someone to work Christmas Eve and Day. It's actually where I did my internship but since then they switched hands and instead of closing inpatient for Eve and Day (and allowing patients to go home) many will be there. After the holidays I would only work weekends which also doesn't work for me. Btw the reason I wanted to work there was because I liked everyone but most left when they were bought out.

Anyway, I've always been of the feeling that pretty much everything should be closed for Christmas Day except needed services and those are limited. However, I have worked at jobs on New Years Eve and New Years Day (those shifts were noon-6pm with double time and paid for 8 hours), Labor Day, Memorial Day (both in retail) ad I believe MLK Day (I think). Obviously I worked on days that are called holidays but nothing closes (Halloween Valentines Day, St Patricks etc).

That;s a good story that you shared, IllinoisTVFan. I have worked on a holiday at Walmart before because New Year's Day, Fourth of July & Thanksgiving were the only holidays that i worked once so far during my 3 1/2 years of being employed under Walmart.

Mandatory stinks but holiday pay isn't bad. I don't mind working some holidays, especially if I'm doing nothing and make extra (like when I did NYE and day).

I work in retail, so yes many times.

I worked in both retail and restaurants when I was younger. I worked nearly every holiday for many years. I can't imagine turning down a job over working a holiday.

I turned it down because it was mostly working weekends and holidays and not interested in that. I don't work Christmas, and won't unless I had to. The money wasn't that great either so no loss.

I worked at Discount Drug Mart on Christmas Day, and it was fine...my parents didn't plan on going to grandma's that day like we usually do until 2013...and it was snowing hard...I loved working there.

And tomorrow, I'll be working at The Salvation Army.

Working in home elderly care , I work all the holidays except Christmas and Thanksgiving ( they spend them with their families) , even New Years day and 4th of July and all the smaller 3 day weekend holidays I've worked!;)

I don't really mind , like for instance 4th of July I'm still off early enough to enjoy a BBQ and fireworks!! ;)

Speaking of stores, my former roommate (back when she worked before she got lazy) she worked at 7-11 on Christmas Day. She got hired to work holidays and didn't care. Where I was doing my internship had picnics on Memorial, Labor Days and July 4th so people worked. I didn't because as an intern I didn't have to work and besides, the day was basically a picnic with family and I really didn't belong there.
