View Full Version : "Homework" script
'80sSitcoms 12-03-2018, 02:55 PM I finally got to read one! lol...the tiny one, lol
So, at Blair's first line, Sue Ann looks up, "annoyed"? Wow, she must've not been in a good mood this night in the common room, lol.
And then she gets even more annoyed! Wow, lol (but what realism!).
I like that Blair ends "(SMILING IMPISHLY)", haha.
I find it interesting though, they do not note Sue Ann as reading a book in the first place.
You're right Retro, I could totally see this being a cold open!
Wow, one page from 1979/1980 that has remained floating out there somewhere---what a find! Thanks for sharing!

Thank GOD! I've been trying to say as little as possible, and I was about to explode!

I can totally picture that! I bet you can, too.

Yeah, kind of odd.

Definitely, or a tag at the end.

No problem! I couldn't believe my eyes when I saw it existed. I realized here was a lost piece of TV history, and I had to share it with fellow fans who enjoy the show as much as I do.

You poor guy! Okay, ya know what? Maybe instead of printing, I'll start going through some other scripts (oo, I sound like a Hollywood elite! ) chunk by chunk, so I can FINALLY talk about them here!

Yep!
Definitely, or a tag at the end.
Only they didn't do tags, so that's why I thought a cold open.

Yes, we fellow fans thank you for your efforts!!

Thank you! I'm dying over here!

They didn't really do cold opens, either, and yet there are two of those, as well. ;)
Shutting off a light seems much more like a tag moment than a cold open. And the script's presence at the end of "Dope" doesn't seem like where a cold open would go. Then again, I haven't seen the scripts for the episodes with cold opens included, so I could be wrong.
Yes, we fellow fans thank you for your efforts!!Just glad I could provide some interesting material for conversations.

See? They did do cold opens. Granted, only 2, but they did those 2.

Well, if they did any tags, this would be a perfect one for "I.Q."
Other than that, it sure sounds like a cold open to me. And the turning out of the common room lamp fading to black would make for a great transition if they faded up from black to the title screen for the intro.
But yeah, if this shows at the end of "Dope", that is odd, and throws a whole wrench into that, lol.
(by the by, as a last resort for printing, I've emailed our library asking how much printing black and white pages is per page, lol)

Well, doing two cold opens (out of 200+ episodes) isn't really "doing cold opens"; when describing the show to someone who had never seen it, I wouldn't say "they even did cold opens on the show!" I'd say, "Twice they even did cold opens." I mean, this wasn't a show known for its cold opens.

It definitely might be a cold open. Its presence, appended after the end of "Dope" seemed to indicate a tag. But either way, it ended up on the cutting room floor.
As a cold open, I think it might work best with "Emily Dickinson", as that episode involved homework and cheating.

Smart thinking!

Haha, no, I was speaking strictly of season 1. 2 cold opens out of 13. So they did them, albeit rarely, lol.
And then you had The Hallmark Channel, which edited the shows so that they had cold openings! (I vividly remember "Gossip" 's cold open).

Really? I think "I.Q." works better, since Sue Ann is studying a book and is asked by Nancy for help, and Blair later tries to lazily use Nancy as her answer bank, lol.
Smart thinking!
Hey, I ain't gonna end up no dog catcher in Paramus, New Jersey! lol (no offense to any Paramus, NJ dog catchers!)

What was Gossip's cold open?

That would also work.

Wait 'til you see the original script...
'80sSitcoms 12-03-2018, 05:08 PM What was Gossip's cold open?
It faded up into the cafeteria, Blair with an open newspaper and (I think) putting her hair behind her ear. And Tootie piping up with, "Hey, wanna hear some gossip?" and Blair looking "impish" (heehee) with "What?", or however their lines go. I guess that was the first "fake cold open" I saw because I remember being like, " B-but that's not how the show goes!"
It's interesting that they "de-evolved" by trying a couple of cold opens in season 1 and then not doing them at all, instead of what you may assume of not doing them, then progressing to doing them. Interesting.
Wait 'til you see the original script...
Whetting my appetite all the more!
Lorimar Television 12-03-2018, 05:09 PM I definitely see it as a cold open. In my head after Sue Ann says "hey" I can picture it doing that wipe and "Theres a place you gotta go for learning.." starting.

Shhh no spoilers... :eek3:

What a minute, was this an unaired scene or did they just move the first screen to before the opening?

Yes! That's where my mind goes, too :) Along with audience laughter in the dark giving way to those singing gals!
Shhh no spoilers... :eek3:
Hahaha! Good ol' Lorimar! :D
What a minute, was this an unaired scene or did they just move the first screen to before the opening?
Exactly. They cut the first scene into a small part, and a larger part, and moved the small part to the beginning, a la a "cold open"! (and that first part was cut for syndication, as it opened up right on Tootie blabbing about Mr. Harris, and nothing beforehand)
RetroGuy2000 12-03-2018, 05:30 PM Cool info about the Hallmark Channel-syndicated "Gossip"!

It definitely could be.

LOL, yes! Don't be so unsure of yourself, Lorsy :p
I wanted to ask you who wrote it just saying the title, but that seemed way too hard to only say "Reflections", lol.
(it's nice you can help me cheat while "Mr. Retro" 's not around! heehee!)

80s Dude 05-22-2020, 04:11 PM One cold opener that didn't make sense for the episode that it appeared in was when Molly and Mrs. Garrett was on the couch and Molly started with the worda "Sex, sex, sex." for Flash Flood. I thought that would have been a better cold opener for "Facts of Love."
'80sSitcoms 05-22-2020, 04:12 PM ^---ooo, it would!

That definitely would have been a better fit.
80s Dude 05-23-2020, 12:39 PM What was the episode where they got Baryshnikov's answering machine (only the wealthy had them in those days)? Dieting?
We found out in the recent documentary that was really Baryshnikov's voice.
