The Conners is doing much better than Roseanne Barr’s supporters had hoped. When ABC made the surprising announcement they were canceling the top new show due to remarks some deemed racist, people were shocked. While anyone who had followed Roseanne’s career over the years wasn’t surprised that she would make a politically targeted joke that would be viewed as controversial, the fact that ABC would cancel the reboot after it was a ratings’ success was a shock.

After a period of confusion and indecision, fans of the show (and specifically Sara Gilbert) rallied together in hopes the show would continue without Roseanne. Even Barr said she felt terrible about the people who lost their jobs overnight due to her tweet.

As Roseanne Barr is an outspoken proponent of President Donald Trump, and many of her cast members held different political views, some argued that it was really Barr’s personal belief that resulted in the abrupt firing and show’s cancellation.

When it was announced the show would continue without Roseanne controversy spread across social media platforms. Some politicized the new show with many on the right hoping the show would fail and vowed not to watch it. Those on the left supported the firing and wanted to see the show take a new direction that was aligned with more Democratic views.

Interestingly, the Roseanne reboot was about a family with different political views working together. Art didn’t imitate life though when ABC heads decided there was no working with the Emmy-winning actress, producer, and writer due to her tweet.

ABC announced that The Conners has won its Tuesday night timeslot by 17 percent and is now the number two television show following NBC’s This Is Us. The Conners is so popular, it only trails This Is Us by half a point.

ABC ordered 10 episodes of The Conners Season 1. The show airs Episode Six “One Flew Over The Conners’ Nest on Tuesday, November 27, 2018.

I still refuse to watch it. Honestly, even if Roseanne had stayed for season 2, I probably would’ve given up on it by now. The chemistry just isn’t there like it used to be.

How can you say the chemistry isn’t there when you refuse to watch it?

Anyway...

Never thought I’d say this but I love the show without Roseanne. While I do like Roseanne, as an actress, she was way out of line with her tweet. While it would have been better if they kept her on, it just wasn’t realistic. The Conners show feels less political and doesn’t feel like politics are being shoved down our throats, like the revival did and, I’m glad it’s doing well. The show still holds up without Roseanne.

^I watched the original reboot and it just wasn’t up to snuff. I can’t imagine the knockoff being any better.

I think you should give it a chance. The Conners is actually a lot more true to the original than last years reboot was.

sitcoms are better without the decisive politics - even if those jokes don't completely fall flat and aren't dated material in a few months you still risk pissing off at least half your audience

Roseanne has always been notoriously difficult to work with, more than likely ABC was just looking for the first excuse to get rid of her as soon as they realized how badly she lives up to her reputation. Maybe they even anticipated her doing something that would give them an excuse to get rid of her and just wanted her long enough to get the reboot launched (they've been pretty desperate for hits lately haven't they?)

I definitely felt the chemistry of the new show was a little "off", and hated the fact that Jackie was still too dumb to live (one of the mistakes of the original series was how the later seasons made Jackie an idiot). However, I think they've started to hit their stride again. Episodes 4 and 5 were genuinely funny, and reminded me a lot of the classic series' good era (which for me is seasons 2-7).

The scene were Darlene applies for the newspaper job felt totally like classic Roseanne.

While I haven’t watched the show since Roseanne’s firing, I can see how when you remove a strong personality and leave the rest of the cast to operate as an ensemble rather than as supporting players you might come up with something people prefer.

I don't like how the "Roseanne" revival made DJ a military guy. That was political and it is way out of character for D.J. Conner. In the original run, D.J. was a dork who was obsessed with Steven Spielberg and cinema. He was still that way as a teenager. Now this absolute personality change is beyond ridiculous and unfortunately, the new series "The Conners" are stuck with this nonsense. They should have left D.J. as the cinema nerd that he was.
