View Full Version : Replacement TV Themes That Sucked
http://www.manic-expression.com/five-replacement-tv-themes-that-sucked/
Sometimes for a show’s final season the creators will change up (http://www.manic-expression.com/ten-awful-season-1-tv-themes-that-were-replaced/) the familiar and popular theme, with one that isn’t. And I don’t mean changing the images or altering the length of the song. I mean re-recording an new version of the opening song, or a totally new song altogether, and it’s just awful
Of course this often works fine. Like the evolving “Boy Meets World” theme’s which were always good, or “Alf”‘s jazzier theme in its later years, and of course changing up the song didn’t hurt “A Different World” any, But not all are so lucky.

I remember one that certainly did-- the ninth-and-final-season title track of Falcon Crest (1989-90), in which the orchestral theme song that had served the show well for the first 8 seasons' worth (1981-89) was replaced with some kind of pop/rock ditty that hardly fit at all (and the opening was incredibly overhauled, as well).

tlc38tlc38 11-24-2018, 09:29 AM I thought this was about TV themes that were replaced with alternate music on the DVD release.
In that case, “Bosom Buddies” and season 2 of “Happy Days” suffered badly. Also, all 5 seasons of “Grace Under Fire” used the syndicated theme instead of the Aretha Franklin song.
stevea 11-24-2018, 09:36 AM A lot of people liked the addition of lyrics to the That Girl theme in the final season, but I think the instrumental version was just fine.

I agree.

Oh yes, that was horrible.
stevea 11-24-2018, 12:50 PM In season 4 of Silver Spoons, they jazzed up the theme, and it wasn't bad. Late in season 4 and for the final season they gave it a hard rock feel. Not so good.
AntennaTV2020 11-25-2018, 06:42 PM In season 6 of Growing Pains, the changed the theme song to that terrible slow acapella version and it sucked. I also didn't care for the slightly upbeat version of the theme they used in Season 4 either.

I actually liked the acapella Growing Pains theme.
One theme song change I didn't like was the bizarre theme song change on Eight is Enough. They changed it to this horrible, sappy dreck, sung by the oldest son.
When you watch Roseanne, it's easy to identify the horrible last original season (and thus skip it) just by the addition of vocals. I appreciate that.
tlc38tlc38 11-25-2018, 07:03 PM ^I liked season 9’s theme for “Roseanne”.

It was the least bad part of that season. ;)
But what do I know? I liked the first season theme of A Different World.

icecream 11-25-2018, 10:57 PM I actually liked the acapella Growing Pains theme.
I like that Growing Pains theme too. While the original theme was good, the acapella theme was even better, nice harmonies on it.

Yep!
I didn't know this until recently, but there are at least two slightly different versions of the acapella, one used for Season 6, and one used for some Season 7 episodes.

Wish I'd thought of that. That has to be the absolute worst.
Any sane person working with the show, screening it before the season, would have said, don't fool with a winner. Leave it the way it was.

No sane people were still working on Happy Days by that point; they all left after the first 100 episodes. How else do we explain the introduction of characters like KC Cunningham, Chachi, Mork from Ork, and Ted McGinley?
DJM77 11-26-2018, 09:07 AM I actually liked the acapella Growing Pains theme.

I can't stand the acapella version of the Growing Pains theme.
I like both of the Eight Is Enough theme songs, but there probably aren't many other people that like the one with vocals on it.
DJM77 11-26-2018, 09:12 AM The reason that the writer of that blog can't find a video of the final year's Designing Women theme is because the final year didn't have a theme.

So basically, there was no final-season title track on that 1986-93 CBS comedy; it just started cold?

And I have heard that one a lot more than the first theme, with it being the one shown on the theme songs site I have bookmarked.

I'm not sure if an 11 second instrumental can count as a title track.

BigManMike 11-26-2018, 07:15 PM How about the last season of Diff’rent Strokes when it was on ABC? It wasn’t bad but it was nowhere near as good as the original.
Edward216 11-27-2018, 01:59 AM The Drew Carey Show, in one of the later seasons (Maybe it was the last season I can't remember) they used some lousy version of Five O' Clock World as a theme song. I think it was specifically recorded for the show but either way I absolutely hate it.
Ed.
treky 11-27-2018, 02:19 AM I agree.
so do I.
danderson400 11-29-2018, 05:14 PM When they replaced the original theme for Another World, "Another World Theme" by Charles Paul, and replaced it with the "(You Take Me Away To) Another World" song, with Crystal Gayle and Gary Morris.

This is what I thought was replaced with that Gayle/Morris song:

I agree. This is an example where the composers threw in too many unnecessary elements to try and freshen things up, but it just sounds over the top.
One of the later seasons of Remington Steele (I think season four) had the same problem...it was too much going on.
I was never a fan of the second That 70s Show theme.
RetroGuy2000 12-01-2018, 05:31 PM The third season closing theme of The Land of the Lost replaced a great theme, and wasn't as good. It was this weird banjo version.
Crusinforabrusin 12-05-2018, 12:27 AM Happy Day's theme song in later years was awful. L
Lorimar Television 12-14-2018, 04:08 AM Yep!

I really hated the accapella song, it made me sort of sad. I’m really glad they brought back the other theme for the last season
