View Full Version : TV Land Supposedly will Go Back to its Classic Roots, No More Originals

The last original airing on the station has been cancelled and will end next year. My thread title is what the article in the link speculates. I don't know how much truth there is in that, but if TV Land does want to improve and go back to their roots they have got to remove all off the clock programming. If they need more money add an hour or two of infomercials from 4/5-6AM but have every classic series start on the hour or half hour. Even if going back to all reruns, newer garbage like Two and a Half Men should go elsewhere. Everybody Loves Raymond is newer but does have more of a classic feel. Another Viacom network CMT used to be off the clock but removed all of it, I don't have that station any more though.

This is really fantastic news!! I would love to see them do this...

1.Remove off the clock Programming or even do what tbs use to do start at :05

2.I would love to see more older TV Sitcoms Of The 1950’s & 1960’s airring at Nite. In Matter a fact perhaps TVLand can call there Nitetime Programming
NICK at NITE. Wasn’t this station originally called NICK at NITE’s TVLand! A lot of NICK at NITE’s old jingles was Hello out there from tvland! NICK at NITE Trixie, Adventures with Milkman, the man and or woman running in turning on NICK at NITE than something weird happens.Perhaps even adding Summer block Parties and Classic TV Countdowns leading into New Years!

3. I would love to see Better Living Through Television added to Saturday NITE’s and Sunday Morning’s. (Perhaps even Fandeominum Weekends).

4. Returning to Classic MERRYTHON’s they aired during the Christmas holidays.

5. So many Greats they can Return BUT I also would love them to show
the middle. Starring Patricia Heaton & Neil Flynn & Charlie McDermott &
Eden Sher & Atticus Shaffer.

6. No binge scheduling-Marathon blocks unless a Special Marathon/Holiday.

7. Remove Paid Programming

8. No weird edits.

9. No credit Crunches

If they can accomplish these nine tasks than I would say Take me, Take Me, Take Me to TV LAND!! (Ding, Ding). Hello out there from tvland a beautiful place to be Nick at Nite’s Better Living Through Good TV!

Don’t set your hopes too high. I’ll believe it when I see it.

To then, “classic” means early 2000s...

That would be great if it meant all three or four shows on Logo would be shipped over to TV Land, and if they would show less commercials and edit out less.

It's a sign they're in trouble. But getting rid of "modernized" credits, off the clock, and heavily edited shows? I'll believe it when I see it.

One thing I'd like to see as the first order of business: Gunsmoke and Bonanza, gone.

Kevin Kay who was running Paramount CMT, TVLAND left the company some time in 2018.

Kent Alterman seems to be the one in charge of Paramount Comedy Central, TVLAND.

If it happens to TVLand in the future then they completely ditch a production of their originals by...

- install the daylong Flashback Friday block featuring the shows(uncut versions) that were originally aired in the 1960s, the 1970s, the 1980s & the 1990s.
- the older shows(from the 60s to the 90s) will air in the morning & afternoon hours, the newer shows(from 2000-present) will air in the evening & late night/overnight hours.
- the channel reverts to on the clock programming

...but that just a actual prediction

Remember twice as nice mornings? Petticoat Junction and My Three Sons, at least. Ah, those were the days.

Now the only classic show they have is TAGS.

It will be very interesting to see what happens, but I do have some suggestions:

1. Bring back the retro commercials

2. The return of The TV Land Awards

One thing I'd like to see as the first order of business: Gunsmoke and Bonanza, gone.

You better believe it! I have never cared for either of those two Westerns, and never will. The only ones I've ever really liked are Have Gun, Will Travel and Wanted: Dead or Alive, both on CBS way-back-when.

Westerns belong somewhere like MeTV anyway, not TV Land.

Yeah...thanks for that reminder. Somebody who's good at doing schedules should do one! Please include staples they used to have, like Petticoat Junction, Green Acres, My Three Sons, Diff'rent Strokes, Leave It To Beaver, Facts of Life, Silver Spoons, maybe even Donna Reed and Father Knows Best, and others in a 50s block on the weekends.

This is fun to think about, but I have to remind myself they probably won't go back to their classic roots.

If they do (and I'm not saying they will), they should go for shows not commonly aired on the digital networks. Get stuff like Chico and the Man, The New Dick Van Dyke Show, It's a Living, The Dukes of Hazard, Bachelor Father, etc. instead of the really common shows.

They are both owned by the same company so I doubt there would be a difference in the amount of commercials or the editing of shows.

I think Betty White made HIC. Gaffigan is kind of a funny guy, too, although that didn't last.

The adds sounds good, too, not commonly seen.

How true. The promos for that garbage, Teachers, is an embarrassment, and shouldn't be on a cable network (let alone the program itself).

At least Teachers will be the last TVLand original scripted series to air in TVLand, 10 remaining episodes of season 3 will air on Jan 15 every week new episodes. Then afterwards it will be done. Younger season 6 will be moved to Paramount to air that season.

And it's funny that TVLand will no longer be doing original shows anymore this year, just like Nick at Nite had no longer used original shows since 2015. And Instant Mom was the last N@N original show to air, (though fall 2015 it moved to TVLand)

While I may not buy the going back to it's roots story just yet. But personally if I could rebrand TV Land. I'd turn the station into a predominantly 1960's & 1970's sitcoms one. While running mid to late 50's programming in the morning and on weekend nights. Which would include stuff like the old Hollywood serials and 3 Stooges.

Please don't take this as being preachy, and I'm not a moderator, but I'm just trying to be helpful to those who might not know--we're not supposed to post about others' incorrect grammar, etc. The rule is copy/pasted below:

3. Please do NOT correct other users spelling, punctuation, and/or grammar. This isn't English class - as long as the message is coherent enough to make it's point, that's all we ask.

For instance, I'm not supposed to point out that there's an incorrect apostrophe in the rule!

I’m glad I’m not the only one that actually finds nostalgia in these things. I HATE the commercials of today but actually find comfort in the vintage, retro commercials from 70s-90s.

The bumpers from TGIF were my absolute favorite. That block made me look forward to watching TV back in the day. Great shows and they were weaved together with great hosts.

It's shocking to see program blocks, even from 15 years ago, from TV Land/Nick at Nite. So much innovation and creativity. Now they cannot spend an extra second of time on anything that isn't an ad (most often, a junk ad).

Also, if they must continue off the clock programming, expand the half hour program block to 40 minutes (3 40s per two hours) (from the current 33 to 35), and use the extra minutes for more program, and creative material, bumpers, etc.

(Off topic, sorry!) The original ABC airings of Home Improvement had absolutely fantastic bumpers. Some survived awhile into syndication (but certainly not today--we couldn't spare 5 seconds for that!), but never made it onto the DVD sets.

If TV Land going back to its classic roots means finally getting to air (the original) One Day at a Time after avoiding it throughout their entire existence, then by all means, they may as well just go for it (if those rumors is true). I know some of you may not like ODaaT, but I've had to rely of FETV to get my ODaaT fix. (I'm part of a family that subscribes to Dish Network, and we don't get Antenna TV).

I doubt this will be a true "return" of classics. Some shows have run too long and too many episodes in a row. Going back "on the clock" will either require more editing of the shows and giving up an extra commercial or two. Don't see that happening either. Sometimes I forget what show or episode I was watching during the commercials and sometimes flip the channel and never change it back. Stuff like the old, original TV Land would probably require an extra fee similar to Netflix or a higher tier of cable. If they'd really go back I'd subscribe to a streaming service.
