What's with several people in the DePue segment using the phrase "in effect" even when it did not fit? Is it a Michigan thing?

I'm from Montana and I've heard that phrase used before. Not a ton, though. I"ll defer to anyone from Michigan to tell me if it's common there. lashlarue 11-22-2018, 04:49 PM I'm not a native Michigander (I was born and raised in southwest Ohio) but it has been my home for the last 16 years almost. I don't hear people here saying that anymore than I have or do anywhere else. schmave 11-23-2018, 02:12 PM Same here in Ohio. I knew plenty of people from Michigan and have never heard them use it more or less than anyone else. I think it was Marilyn Depue’s friend who said (regarding the letters Dennis sent rationalizing the murder of his wife) something like “Dennis seemed to be saying that we were responsible for Marilyn’s death, when in effect it waa Dennis who pulled the trigger.” I don’t think that’s the proper use of “in effect.” UMlover 07-12-2021, 01:13 PM I think I cracked the case on this one! It’s people confusing “in effect” with “in fact”. “He seemed to be saying we were responsible for Marilyn’s death, when IN FACT it was Dennis who pulled the trigger.” **Takes small bow* |
