Evidently all the closing credits originally played with Andy and Opie returning from the fishing hole, playing in the background. Some of these were recorded off TV screens by enterprising people, and posted to Youtube. They include sponsor product plugs in the lower right corner, common back in the day.

I know I've seen color episodes in syndication, years ago, with Andy and Opie in the background (one from season 6 is posted on Youtube). Maybe in later years of the original show they made a version sans the sponsor plugs.

It would probably be very difficult to make a version which retained the live-action in the background, and removed the sponsor plug, without having all the original elements. So I understand why they had to re-do the credits on a plain background for syndication. What I don't understand is why DVD sets use the altered credits. They should have used the originals!
