View Full Version : A Bomb in a Grade School
CeeBaby 06-04-2002, 12:33 PM I recently watched an episode of Unsolved Mysteries about a man named David something-or-other and his wife who took a homemade bomb into a grade school classroom in Cokeville, WY and threatened to blow the school up. There was a string tied to his arm, and if he jerked it, the bomb would explode. The teachers made a box around him out of tape, and told the children to stay out. The man got agitated and gave the string to his wife while he left the room. She accidently set the bomb off. No kids were killed, and everyone believed it was devine intervention, that God saved them. The only two people who died were David and his wife. My question is: Does anybody know why he went into the school with the bomb in the first place? I missed that part.
Thanks!
Carissa

ernmerica 08-23-2012, 09:35 AM I am pretty sure they are going to air a new episode of "I Survived" featuring the Cookeville Elementary case, with 3 survivors on Sunday night on Bio.
I always disliked this case, it made me puke how UM and the people involved turned it into a "sign from God" that the whole bomb didn't go off, instead of it being some uneducated psychopath incorrectly making the device. So if it had gone off and killed everyone, would it be God's fault then?
justins5256 08-23-2012, 10:45 AM I remember a time in the early 2000s that Lifetime would show this story seemingly once a week. Sometimes in it's original NBC aired format, other times as one of the new, revamped Lifetime episodes. It got old after about two showings.

They would also show the "Resurrection Mary" segment with about the same frequency

Once a week? When they did the 2 hour block every day, I'm positive they showed it 4 times in one week.
This episode, Resurrection Mary, Chair of Death, Money falling from the sky, and the minor league baseball player, were loved by Lifetime.

yes,it's obvious they were clueless about bomb-making,and their intent, from the start (what with the wires being "inexplicably" cut,per UM) was just to scare everyone, and not really cause a huge explosion.it could have been much, much worse.but in knowing they themselves were going to be near this thing, they purposely cut some of the wires,so as not to cause such a huge explosion, should it go off..as the device only appeared to be able to do.They may not have even thought it would have killed them if it went off,but they missjudged that one.
IIRC,I thought the hub didn't die from it,as he wasn't in the room at the time?

The wife died from it; the husband shot himself. In a movie they made about this case, he shot his wife to put her out of her misery, but I think that was fictionalized. Anyone know?

thanks, they were both such cowards, for ever even coming close to a school with a bomb!
XCalibur 08-28-2012, 09:55 PM You all really amaze me, I mean whether or not you believe in God, this was a heart warming event and a miracle that not one single child died. And all some of you care about is just going to great lengths to downplay it and find every reason to discount God's possible involvement. I mean are you trying to convince others or yourselves?
Unless the broadcast straight up lied, the perps had actually constructed several such bombs like this that were done correctly, so the notion they didn't know what they were doing is totally absurd, and the theory that they cut the wires themselves is pure speculation. No I'm not saying angels did it, I wasn't there I don't know why the wires were cut, but there is no proof the perps themselves did it.
Also the notion that they used the bomb simply to scare the school, that doesn't fit either. If all they wanted to do was scare people, they could have just as easily brought a total fake to the school that looked like a bomb and its pretty likely none of the teachers or children would have known the difference.
I bet if it had been some of you all being held in that school by a couple of nutjobs with a bomb, I guarantee you wouldn't be on here downplaying the whole thing in such a cowardly fashion just to support an Atheist view point.

Meh, don't buy it. Again, it's a slippery slope argument, so there were some that were injured and some that were not, supposedly around half of the hostages. I'd be WAY more shocked if there were NO injuries or deaths other than the cowards. According to LE, it wasn't constructed well but had enough material kill everyone in the room. By saying its a miracle from God, you are giving too much credit to the bomb maker, and if you want to do that, okay.
So for the people that were injured, can they blame God because there were others that were untouched and they received serious burns? If they are unable to, than the miracle argument is moot.
As for being in the building, "how would I feel?". Its an unfair position, you are put in a place of serious distress, at a very young age, and you are just looking for a reason. For example, people who go to prison for a long period frequently turn to faith and are asked why. Their response many times is "what else was there in prison". And I get that, they are limited in information and evidence, and most importantly, its what gets them through the pain. We are not in little cages and have all of the info we want at our fingertips, big difference.
It's another example of looking for a heartwarming story instead of the evidence, humans tend to gravitate towards that, and I suppose understand.
I am not trying to rain on any faith parade, I only brought it up because how UM portrayed it. Its very similar to that silly segment on the church explosion.
As for the post about what happened to the wife, she was shot by the husband right before he killed himself.
MegtheEgg86 08-29-2012, 06:15 AM The segment airing ad nauseum is the only thing that ever got me personally. The way I feel about it is similar to the way I feel about the exploding church and near-death experience segments. At the very least, I'd rather see a story about people genuinely grateful for their lives--whatever they attribute their preservation to--than a cynical dismissal of events as mere piles of fact and coincidence. Is that ultimately what it is? Maybe. But to be put in danger or come close to it, and leave that experience not only with your life but with a sense of gratitude only a select few are afforded--that's good out of evil. And I think that's pretty cool. Miraculous, you might say.

I am not supporting an atheist viewpoint AT ALL. (Pls see my post about having a vision of Jesus at a young age under "have you ever seen a ghost").I was only agreeing to the fact that I felt the bomb was intentionally cut down in size, due to them having to handle it themselves, and I felt UM played it up a bit there with the "inexplicably cut" mention. They likely did it themselves, just to give the bomb a greater appearance than it had.The fact the female perp was carelessly moving about with the string on it makes me think they thought they'd downsized it enough to where it woulnd't hurt them if it did go off.But of course they were wrong.this is JMO.
And to give God the credit, yes, amen, give it to Him by all means, and thank God none of the innocent were hurt. :)
