Even on the original series back in the day, Darlene was the closest to Roseanne in terms of temperament, political bent (original series, mind you, not the reboot), and sensibility. In order for us to see Darlene really stepping into that protagonist role where many of us wanted her to be, Roseanne could not remain in the picture.
