Lori Petty is celebrating her 55th birthday. Petty worked for several years as a graphic designer, before going into a career in film and television. In the late 1980s, she had some prominent TV roles, including starring in a TV movie, Bates Motel, that was a spinoff of some famous movie. Petty also had a regular role on the short-lived ABC sitcom The Thorns. She made her feature film debut in 1990, in Cadillac Man.
In the early 1990s, Petty had prominent roles in a number of major films. She played surfer girl Tyler Endicott in Point Break, and women’s baseball star Kit Keller in A League of Their Own. In 1995, Petty starred in the title role of Rebecca Buck/Tank Girl in the post-apocalyptic action comedy Tank Girl.

Tank Girl has acquired some cult classic credibility over the years, but in 1995 it was a box office bomb. The subsequent failure of the Fox Sitcom Lush Life, which Petty co-created and starred in with Karyn Parsons, seems to have ended her chances of being a major actress. In 2008, Petty made her feature directing debut with The Poker House, which starred a young Jennifer Lawrence and was written by Petty based on her episodes in her own life. More recently, she has been appearing on Orange is the New Black, in the recurring role of Lolly Whitehill.
