It's October! The season of Halloween is upon us at Eastland!

pumpkin:  omg:  pumpkin:

Let's imagine we're at the dorm for Halloween in 1979. Just picture all those wonderful kitschy, nostalgic "old school" Halloween decorations all over the dorm, the kind they used to put up in your school classrooms and hallways (particularly the 1980s, and if teachers held onto them year after year, some of those may have indeed come from the '70s, lol).

Mrs. Garrett could have a stand by the front door with a huge bowl full of candy to hand out to neighborhood (or, "closest area around the campus, lol) trick-or-treaters. :)

Maybe the girls could "put on" a haunted house in the dorm for kids to come through.

What do you think would be some fun Halloween costumes for our girls to wear? Here are some options:

Nancy - black cat
Blair - witch (she would go in the traditional black witch's garb with the pointed hat, but would make a statement by being a beautiful witch, lol)
Sue Ann - a genuine Kansas City scarecrow
Cindy - Frankenstein's Monster
Molly - ghost ("The Ghost of Women's Mistreatment Past"? lol)
Natalie - clown
Tootie - bat (when skating, she could hold out her wings and look like she's "gliding", lol)

Happy Halloween! pumpkin:

We could also "Halloween-up" the characters' names:

Nancy Olson - Trancey Coldson
Blair Warner - Scare Mourner
Sue Ann Weaver - Sue Ann Cleaver
Cindy Webster - Sindy Webster
Nina Branch - Screama Branch
Molly Parker - Maul-y Darker
Natalie Green - Batalie Fiend
Tootie Ramsey - Boo-tie Damned-sey

"Webster and "Branch" are already good for cobwebs and branches of spooky gnarled trees.

And the adults:

Edna Garrett - Deadna Scare-ett
Stephen Bradley - S'Demon Madley
Emily Mahoney - Grim-ily Ma-moan-ey
Monica Warner - Moan-ica Mourner
Justin Branch - Gustin Branch*
Harrison Ramsey - Scare-ison Damned-sey
Dr. Jeff Parker - Dr. Death Darker
Angela - Damn-gela

*(like a gustin' wind, lol)

Nice ideas. I would guess Molly would go as someone like Susan B Anthony. I could see Cindy as a 70s female athlete. Blair I think would go more for a Glinda the good witch costume. I think Tootie would go as a roller disco person. Nancy as her fav thing in the world- a phone. I agree with your idea for Sue Ann, or possibly a farmer. Natalie as a clown would make sense, or maybe a magic marker. ;)

Or maybe Joan Baez, lol.

"magic marker", haha!

Those are good ideas too, I was just keeping my ideas in the vein of traditionally "classic" Halloween costumes, which I generally prefer.

What a funny thread!

'80Sitcoms' suggestions for the girls' costumes are great, but I agree with Lorimar that Molly's costume should be Susan B. Anthony (or maybe The Ghost of Susan B. Anthony, if something more spooky is needed?). 1979 was a big year for SBA -- the first coins were struck that year, so she was a hot topic in feminism in 1979; it's just perfect!

I think Natalie should have been a pumpkin, embracing her plumpness.

And I do love the idea of Molly as Susan B. Anthony, even though it's not "Halloweeny", lol.

Halloween Night at the Eastland Dorm - 1979

It was a chubby and strange night. The air hung in a snobby atmosphere on the Eastland campus. In the dorm, Halloween decorations were all over the phone and umbrella. Miss Mahoney was in charge of the decorations, and they looked really invisible.

It was Halloween night. The girls were going to have a liberated party in the common room after trick-or-treating hours were done. They were all dressed in athletic costumes. Blair was a beautiful scarecrow, Sue Ann was a Kansas City good witch, and Nancy was an unbelievable ghost of Susan B. Anthony. Cindy was a gymnastic pumpkin, Molly made a statement as Peter Fonda, while Natalie was funny as a black cat, and everyone thought Tootie was so cute as a bat. Mrs. Garrett got in on the fun dressing up as a zombie headmaster, while Miss Mahoney was a Bride of Frankenstein, and even Mr. Bradley dressed up as a delivery boy!

When neighborhood kids were out trick-or-treating, Mrs. Garrett answered the door by saying "We are in troublllle!" She gave each kid 10, 12 girls. When she ran out of those, she gave the kids magic markers from Mr. Bradley's office.

Then, when trick-or-treating was over, it was time for the party!

The party was a mysterious blast! There was happy music, dejected lighting, and candles everywhere that were harvest gold and smelled like mystery meat. The girls went bobbing for cinnamon buns, and Nancy got her whole head dunked in when Sue Ann accidentally pushed her! They played pin the pigtails on Chestnut, and Blair won. There were great snacks like green pepper, and pie, and cheese dip to drink, and Miss Mahoney played very smart Halloween music on the globe. Mrs. Garrett held a matronly séance, sitting around the grandfather clock with the girls. She went into a square trance and conjured up the spirit of Natalie's grandfather! All the girls skinny-dipped! And then Mr. Bradley scared everyone by jumping out from the piano wearing an Angel from Little Darlings mask! Nancy called Roger on the globe, who was smoking at The Chug-A-Lug Bar, to tell him all about the spooky happenings!

After the séance, everyone went around the sofa and told ghost stories. Natalie told the scariest one of all, about a lawyer who had a bewitched woman that made it rain women all over Eastland! It was so scary it made all the girls roller skate, and Tootie nearly fainted! After that everyone had a late night spooky snack of rolls and soda, and camped out together in the stable overnight.

After that Halloween party of '79, everyone couldn't wait to throw a party for Christmas!

Ahahahha!

Just the image of Cindy wearing a gymnastic pumpkin costume, Mrs. G saying Tootie's catchphrase, dirty feet-scented candles, Mr. Bradley wearing the costume of a 15-year-old girl, and Nancy trying to call Roger on the globe... ahahaha!

:rotflmao:

The only thing that went as expected is Miss Mahoney in the Bride of Frankenstein costume. All she needed were the white zig-zags in her hair!

and Nancy trying to call Roger on the globe... ahahaha!

In preparation for the spooky event, I will be watching some episodes of the show, and you can, too. I'll do my annual tradition and sometime in October I'll watch "The Halloween Show", and maybe also some other spooky episodes. "Seven Little Indians" didn't air in October, but it's suitably spooky enough for Halloween, so I think I'll watch that one, too.

I do believe it's night in "Flash Flood". The exterior shot at the beginning is way darker than if it had been raining in the day, even if it were extremely overcast. Plus, when he first comes in, Mr. Bradley says he's been sandbagging "all night", and the girls are out of uniform for the entire episode. When Cindy turns off the TV, it's like they were watching a special storm report at night.

Yeah, let's go with night. Although with Mr. Bradley's line, that sounds kind of to me like he'd been doing it "all night" as in overnight, and now it's morning. Granted, a VERY DARK morning with all that torrential rain, lol, but still. Or if it were night, it feels like because of his line it'd have to be near 10:00 or so, if he'd been doing it "all night" (I definitely wouldn't accept him saying "all night" if he'd only been at it for one hour, lol. But if he started perhaps at 7:00, by even 9:00 that would be at least two hours).

There is a little bit of faint light visible above the dorm in the exterior shots, but I do like to think of it as nighttime as well. And regarding the street clothes, it also could have even been a Saturday.

(I wonder if the script denotes a specific time of day?)

Yeah, "all night" could even mean they started at 5 PM and worked until 9, when the events of the episode happened, for example.

The script could help, but absent of the script saying otherwise, I will believe it's night.

I never thought it was daytime, even though most stories took place during the day. There were enough stories set in the evening/night that I wouldn't have thought twice about it. And that establishing shot sure looks like night.

Highcliffe Manor!! I just recently learned about this and was like, oh, man, I'd love to see that!

It really was a very unique show; I remember watching it as a small child. Unfortunately, it disappeared from the airwaves very quickly. It was always meant as a limited gothic comedy series with eight episodes, but I believe only six were actually produced.

We, of course, had no idea it was a limited series, and were caught off-guard when the show ended on a cliffhanger with no resolution.

One of the cool things about Highcliffe Manor is that Jenny O'Hara co-starred in this series right before The Facts of Life began: she was taping the series at about the same time "The Girls' School" was being taped.

And Diff'rent Strokes, The Facts of Life, and Highcliffe Manor were all taped at the same facility: Metromedia Square, and produced by the same production company: TAT/Embassy. For her to go from HM to FOL would likely have been a very easy transition: she was already working at the studio, on the TAT payroll.

One of the women chiming in throughout the doc said that she once went to a parade in Greenwich Village, New York and it was a fabulous time, and they showed this footage of parade-goers touting Mrs. Garrett and Natalie signs as she was saying that. I couldn't believe what I was seeing!

There's a place you've got to haunt for learning
All the things you want about the facts of death
The facts of death

But spells are what you care about

When the witch never seems
To be castin' the charms of your dreams
It's time you started findin' out
What graves and tombs are all about

The facts of death
The facts of death

Gotta pass the teth (test)

There's a place you've got to haunt for learning
All the things you want about the facts of death
The facts of death

Where the ghosts are what you're there about
But spells are what you care about
It's now your queth (quest)
To learn the facts of death

When the witch never seems
To be castin' the charms of your dreams
It's time you started findin' out
What graves and tombs are all about

When the ghouls you used to shun are fun
Then you'll know more than anyone
The facts of death
The facts of death

When you hear 'em from a seaman
Better clear 'em with a demon
Gotta pass the teth (test)

Right?? It's hysterical!! :brent It gave me such a good laugh! It's even better when you see them touted in actual footage movement!

 I did eventually think, wait a minute, no Jo??? lol...talk about a (non-gay) gay icon!

You expect Jo a lot more than you would season 1 Mrs. Garrett and seasons 2 and 6(ish) Natalie!

If you wanna see the clip (it's no more than 2 seconds at the most), it's "This Is Halloween", part of "Shock Docs" on the Travel Channel on On Demand.

There's something so off about that.

It's like showing up to the movie theater with 3D glasses, but the movie isn't 3D.

Who thinks "gay Halloween parade" and concludes, "I know... Natalie and Mrs. Garrett!"?

 Yeah, although I can see why if you think about it (Mindy has been referred to as a "f*g h*g" [affectionately] by the gay community, and Mrs. Garrett is very campy, lol). But I know, it's just so funny that there's no Jo, lol.

My favorite is "Hex Education". I can just see the girls in their seats, learning spells from Mrs. Scare-ett!

I've heard about Mindy being a "f** h**", and more power to any of the girls who have a gay following from their work, but Natalie was IMO about as straight as they come. There definitely is a camp aspect to Mrs. Garrett, warbly voice and screaming "Girls, girls, girls!", but the only one who liked touching and hugging girls canonically was Cindy, and the only one the media called gay was Jo. To me, those parade-goers have the wrong signs!

Here's the Facts of Life Halloween Mad Lib™ I wrote that RetroGuy "filled out" a few years ago. I thought it'd be fun to share it again. pumpkin:

After that, everyone had a late night spooky snack of rolls and soda, and camped out together in the stable overnight.

After that Halloween party of '79, everyone couldn't wait to throw a party for Christmas!

Hey, that's your song! Very cool!

Wow, how did you do that? Did someone create that whole track from scratch? I mean at first I thought maybe it was a karaoke track, but the background singers sing "Eastland Mash" instead of "Monster Mash"!

For the vocals, did you get a friend to perform it for you, or did you alter your voice for the performance?

Fun artwork too!
