View Full Version : Edward meets Eastland (a.k.a. "Gorey and the Girls")
'80sSitcoms 09-21-2018, 09:53 AM So since we've had a little Edward Gorey fun in a couple of threads here, I thought it might be fun to dedicate a thread solely to inserts of our girls into the works of Edward Gorey (notably the animated intro of his drawings from PBS's Mystery!).
Here's one from the Mystery! intro: phew, that was a close one, girls!

Looking up this guy right now and he was a writer as well.

Yup, wonderfully whimsical writer and illustrator with a sense of the macabre.
'80sSitcoms 09-21-2018, 11:39 AM Uh-oh, Mr. Bradley---this doesn't look good for you!

She's probably trying to smuggle Mrs. G to safety. There's a creepy dude lurking nearby, and those cops are clueless.

Ah yes! The Cook™!
(It really makes me wonder: did The Cook™ live above the cafeteria before Mrs. G took over those duties? I know, I know: there was no cook, there was no upstairs above the cafeteria, because there was no S2 cafeteria, but there's a part of me that just wants things to fit together.)
Okay, back to our spoooooky discussion...

Oh I know the feeling, but this is easier for me to let go because the cafeteria is such a totally different "summer camp" little room.
And there was too a cook! Molly said so! ;)

I had thought of that... But I don't think it can be. Mrs. G introduces The Girls to Howard in S2, as if they've never met. But Molly is familiar with the cook in S1.
And isn't Howard new in the job, in S2? Will have to check that.

mmmm, not necessarily; if memory serves, she introduces the girls to him as his helpers, not as a first-time-ever meeting.

I never got that feeling. It always felt to me he had already been on hand.
But, replaying it over in my head from memory, I will say I can see how one could interpret it either way (like many things on this series, lol).

I will re-watch. This is definitely an exciting theory. If we can link Howard to The Cook™, another missing piece of continuity between S1 and S2 will be solved, and I will sleep more easily at night!

RetroGuy2000 10-05-2018, 02:33 AM Having just re-watched TNGp2, I now think "Cook" = Howard is a viable fan theory!

By the way, that "white circle" around Molly's head, is where the window had been broken. So it's very easy for her to stealthily eavesdrop! lol
Lorimar Television 10-06-2018, 12:16 AM I figured the season 1 set was a different part of Eastland than the more familiar areas used in 2-4. The cafeteria was definitely not the same one.

I think it was "the cafeteria" in both renderings: the campus's cafeteria in season 1, and the campus's cafeteria in season 2. The producers just "ret-conned" it to make the cafeteria suit season 2's needs (thank goodness!).

Well it was very small. My schools fit 100s for lunch even with different periods. These looked like they fit 40 girls maximum.

The S1 cafeteria, AKA Bradley's office, AKA the gym, was tiny. Did it have more than four tables? I think the maximum number of students it could have seated would have been about 12. Even with three lunch periods (which is what my school used), there could have been a total Eastland enrollment of about 36.
The S2-5 cafeteria could seat many more students; it was just a much bigger room. I estimate there were, or at least could have been, around 10-20 round tables, which could have seated up to six students comfortably. With three lunch periods, Eastland might have had a more reasonable 360 enrollments.

Makes sense for a school for "10, 12 girls". ;)

mmm, I don't know about 20. When I was getting screen caps for the sets/props/decor thread, I was surprised at how few tables were in there. I know we don't see "the entire room", but if we still consider the farthest they come downstage to be close to the unseen 4th wall, it's still not many tables; but definitely more than S1's two!

Hehe! I'm definitely glad they got a larger cafeteria. Can you imagine them trying to have an awards banquet in that small area? Or one of Geri's comedy shows?

Oh, I know they often have no more than about seven tables in there. But there's plenty of space for more tables, especially if you consider the space beyond the lounge pillar, near the fourth wall.

I know, every time I see that tiny little excuse for a cafeteria in "Dieting" it always feels like a sort of summer camp meal room, lol.
In fact, that room is SO small, I used to always assume it was "the dining room in the dorm!"
Oh, I know they often have no more than about seven tables in there. But there's plenty of space for more tables, especially if you consider the space beyond the lounge pillar, near the fourth wall.
Ah, space, yes; but the lounge, that would feel kind of isolating to put tables past the pillar "in front of the lounge" (unless that's where the wall would be and you couldn't put any there anyway, lol).

Oh, No. I wasn't talking about tables in the lounge. That would be very awkward during those alumni banquets and similar functions. I was talking about the area closer to the camera/fourth wall, to the left of the pillar.
In "Cousin Geri", we see that there is enough room for four tables across the cafeteria. (See attached image). Those tables seat up to six.
In "The Facts of Life Reunion", we see the cafeteria space, and there is room for five rows down the cafeteria (they show four, but there is actual space for five).
4 tables across by 5 tables down would be about 20 tables, with seating for six. You might have to remove one table for the entryway, but that's it.
Lorimar Television 10-07-2018, 01:10 AM I’d definitely say they have several cafeterias. They’re just way too small to be for the whole school.
'80sSitcoms 10-07-2018, 10:54 AM I’d definitely say they have several cafeterias. They’re just way too small to be for the whole school.
I strongly disagree. It is one small private school, with one cafeteria, just like they have one gym, one library, etc. (I've also never heard of a school having multiple cafeterias; doesn't mean they don't exist, I've just never heard of any). Blair even says in TNGP2, "We'll be living over the cafeteria?" Not a cafeteria", but the cafeteria. It was just foolish in season 1 to show a "broom closet" for a cafeteria.
RetroGuy2000 10-07-2018, 03:54 PM My fan theory is this: the real cafeteria was temporarily closed, leading Eastland to have to use a small employee breakroom as the cafeteria for a short while. That's why there were only three tables. Luckily, that situation only lasted a few weeks.

'80sSitcoms 12-01-2018, 02:37 PM Halloween may have come and gone (and it did and has, lol), but there's always room for Gorey. :)

RetroGuy2000 10-27-2019, 09:22 PM Halloweentime---always a good time for Gorey! pumpkin:
Indeed it is. and here's an interesting and unusual Edward Gorey quote:
You lose flower to Roger but win his fraternity pin. Next day you encounter campus queen. You notice she is wearing identical pin. 'Oh," you say warmly, 'I see you are also pinned to a Gamma Gamma Gamma. Which one?' Campus Queen smiles, 'Why to Roger, of course.'
You say lovingly, 'Roger is awfully generous.'
