Jada Pinkett Smith celebrates her 47th birthday today. Pinkett was born in Baltimore, and briefly attended the North Carolina School of the Arts, but dropped out to pursue her screen career. She made her debut on an episode of True Colors, and in 1991 began appearing as Lena James on A Different World. Pinkett became a regular for the show’s final season. While she was absent from the small screen for many years, Pinkett returned as the star of TNT’s Hawthorne in 2009, and more recently as Fish Mooney on season 1 of Gotham.
Pinkett made her feature film debut in 1993, starring in the Hughes Brothers’ Menace II Society. In the mid-1990s, she starred in the remake of The Nutty Professor, and the crime thriller Set It Off. After her 1997 marriage to Will Smith, she began being billed as Jada Pinkett Smith. Early in the 2000s, she had major roles in Ali, as Niobe in the Matrix sequels, and as Annie Farrell in Michael Mann’s Collateral.

Pinkett Smith apparently decided to slow her feature film career down in the mid-2000s. For a number of years, her main feature role was as Gloria in the Madagascar franchise. She made her feature writing and directing debut in 2008 with The Human Contract, and she and Smith were the co-creators of the mid-2000s sitcom All of Us. She appeared in the recent features Bad Moms and Girls Trip, and is scheduled to appear, in an unspecified role, in Angel Has Fallen, the third in the franchise that began with Olympus Has Fallen.
