Wally is going to take Beaver to Cyrstal Falls and it is 90 miles from Mayfield. Ward tells June that it will only be three hours on the bus. What was the posted speed limit in Mayfield v. Cyrstal Falls?
I get that the bus has to stop and pick up passengers, but it seems very slow traveling. What say you?
I think I could ride the goose in my avatar and get there sooner.

Going 60 it would take an hour and a half. So the bus would be averaging 30 to take 3 hours. IIRC they showed scenery going by, and it looked like they were making pretty good time.
Even with several stops that still seems like too long.

Right and Crystal Falls is always a different distance depending on the episode, like in Broken Window, Ward’s Problem or Bus Trip.

We've also discussed the distance to Friends Lake, depending on the episode.

Just throwing out some ideas.
Many interstate freeways were being built at the time, but most towns were still connected by "unimproved" two lane highways. Traffic could be heavy with slow moving tractor-trailers going slow up and down hills and curves.
Each town would have at least one stop sign or stop light to allow local people to safely cross the street. Traffic could and did back up on the edge of town.
Some bus lines carried package and parcel service in one of its luggage bays. The bus would stop at bus stops and have a small delay as the driver would load and unload goods. This would allow passengers to disembark to use the restroom and buy refreshments.

Yes, I am a member of our local highway/freeway group on Facebook. It is amazing how much "in town" driving on the freeway people had to do between cities on our highway/freeway.

Poor Mr. Payton had to drive all the way to Mayfield to pick up Beaver. Seems like Saturday was spent riding on buses and cars. It was probably night when they got back to Crystal Falls. Mr. Payton never even got to be in the cast. I’m still surprised Wally didn’t already have Beaver’s suitcase in the car since Beaver got on the wrong bus.

Had the situation been real it had potential for disaster. Most approx. 8 year olds probably aren't as resourceful as Beaver was.
Wally was probably a little too young to trust him with the task.

Even Lumpy's heap with the sick cow honk for a horn could have gotten there faster than that modern age bus.;)
