View Full Version : I'm flying in a month, any advice?
IllinoisTVFan 09-12-2018, 01:05 AM Okay, assuming the hurricane is gone in a month, I am heading to Myrtle Beach to a conference. I am leaving my house on Wednesday and returning on Sunday. I am planning on taking two pieces of luggage, my laptop bag and my carry on (hopefully). In one of the bags I plan on putting in my purse and two totebags I take everywhere (will fold them). Anyway, I am flying Delta and they allow a carry on and a personal item so my personal will be the laptop bag of here https://www.amazon.com/Brenthaven-3482-Triload-XF-Friendly-Notebook/dp/B001T9NGM0, which is 16 x 6.5 x 12 inches. My carry on is 13x18x7.
I only flew twice before, heading to and from boot camp so this has been a long time. I'm hoping these two bags can be carried on the plane, going by what I see online they will fit as I don't want to do checked baggage (worry about things being stolen). I have been looking online and see people recommend packing cubes so will get these, and will roll my clothes as these save space.
So far this is what I have on my list to bring.
1. Pants: dress pants, jogging pants
2. Shirts: T shirts, blouses
3. Sweatshirts, sweaters
4. Underwear
5. Pantyhose
6. Socks
7. Bras
8. Robe and slippers
9. Swimsuit, towel and flip flops
10. Shorts
11. Jacket
12. Umbrella
13. Dryer/curler
14. Purse (in suitcase and taken apart, possibly split), wallet, driver’s license, debit card, checkbook and money
15. Laptop, tablet, book, Headphones, mouse, chargers for laptop, tablet, iPod, phone
16. Night clothing
17. Shoes, gym shoes, sandals and moccasins
18. Jewelry (earrings, several pairs, bracelet and necklaces)
19. Blanket, pillow?
20. Blazer, dress
21. iPod
22. Blue tote bag and small green tote bag
23. Makeup
24. Nail clippers
25. Band-Aids
26. Vaseline/Chapstick
27. Floss
28. Razors
29. Inhaler
30. Water bottle
31. Quart Bag, 3.4 Ounces
32. Foundation
33. Toothpaste
34. Deodorant
35. Shampoo/Conditioner
36. Suntan lotion
During the day I will be at the conference and at night me and my classmates are going to tour the area. I plan on buying souvenirs for a few people.

First off, this sounds exciting! :)
Wow, what a list! You might need to rethink some of it, because you have to pack as light as possible.
12. Umbrella ~~I know why you would want it, but takes up room
13. Dryer/curler ~~ Most hotels now have hair dryers built in the bathrooms, not sure about curling irons, but you probably won't want to use one that has been in someone else's hair anyway
15. Laptop, tablet, book, Headphones, mouse, chargers for laptop, tablet, iPod, phone~~Do you need a laptop and tablet or could you do everything on a tablet.
19. Blanket, pillow?~~not sure why you would need these.
24. Nail clippers and 28. Razors~~ make sure that they would not consider them a weapon--don't LAUGH, they could.
30. Water bottle~~must be CLEAR-no color bottles
32. Foundation
33. Toothpaste
34. Deodorant
35. Shampoo/Conditioner
36. Suntan lotion~~ not sure how they look st these anymore.

IllinoisTVFan 09-12-2018, 10:38 PM Yeah the list could change so this is just a start. I use my laptop often so I kind of need it, though use my tablet for other things. I've heard hotels have a dryer so if they do, I won't take it. I can only bring liquids in 3 oz I think so I will limit this (and if the hotel offer them won't take as much). Blanket and pillow was something someone mentioned, like if I get cold on the plane. I don't think I'll bring those anyway. Yeah, I've heard at times they considered nail clippers and razors weapons (which of course is silly) but apparently they lifted this ban. I have several clear water bottles so I would bring these. I am looking forward to this, though ironically it is in Myrtle Beach and who know how Hurricane Florence will affect it.
RetroGuy2000 09-13-2018, 03:00 AM Have a safe trip!
One thing I always bring in the carry-on bag are mints. Never know when you'll need to settle your stomach, or avoid someone's bad breath on the plane.
For sure put the iPod and the headphones/earbuds together, and in the bag you are for sure going to be carrying on board, not the bag that may be too big/heavy to go on carry-on.
Since women are much more likely to get cold, a very light-weight blanket in the carry-on bag might be good. Some flights have blankets, but shorter flights generally do not.
Leave empty space in your bags. That way, you have room for souvenirs when you're coming back.
If you have a choice of seats, avoid babies, talkative groups of friends, and women (women will need to get up more to use the restroom).
Ditch the umbrella; bring a good hoodie instead. A hoodie is more practical, and has a wider range of uses, including warmth, blocking out light, etc., and it can be wrapped around your waist for easy carrying if it gets too warm. An umbrella is cumbersome, and is only better in heavy rain.
Roll your clothes instead of folding them.
IllinoisTVFan 09-15-2018, 02:44 PM Mints are a great idea, never thought of that but that works great. Yeah, I am bringing a laptop bag and in that bag go all my electronics (and a spare set a of clothes in the event I do have to check my other bag). I don't have a choice in the seat (it was bought for me) but I really hope I'm nowhere near babies since I don't like them.
MISST3 09-16-2018, 06:28 PM I would nix using the airline blankets. Wear a sweater or shawl. The airlines reuse the blankets over and over again, they just fold them and put them away for the next flight.
Always ask for a new blanket in a unopened plastic bag, if they don't have one. Forget it!
IllinoisTVFan 09-16-2018, 06:37 PM Yeah I probably wouldn't use their blankets because I have psoriasis so my skin reacts to different kinds of things and I tend to shed and hate to leave my skin behind.
Just only take the stuff you will need and you'll be all set.

Yes. Pack as light as you can! ;) And I suggest to check in your bags and only carry on a small bag and your laptop ! Planes are more crowded these days than ever and less is aloud to carry on! Sometimes you get up to the gate and they force you to check on a bag (even though they are small and in the regulations) thing with that is they will let you do it for free if you get that far and are forced to check it on) ! ;)
But I find it better to check on bags even though they charge now ! Allow yourself plenty of time arriving at the airport to do this! Reason why besides the restrictions of how much you can carry on nowadays is you never know when there will be a flight delay or gate change and you are stuck lugging lots of things around the airport !:p Plus finding space in the overhead and all that! Just easier to have one small bag with you! ;)
Make sure your necessaties are in that bag. Like makeup and cosmetics toothbrush/paste etc.(in the small 3 oz bottles in a plastic baggy) and pack a pair of underwear and a light weight sleep shirt or big T shirt to wear in case of luggage being lost , so you can change your underwear the next day and have something to sleep in!;) It's very rare luggage is lost though and they get it to you pretty quickly / next day! That happened to me only once and I have been flying since 1980!! ;)
So make everything as easy as possible for yourself while you are at the airport and on the plane! You can't help the turbulance which is nerve wracking, so if you have any tranquilizer type medications have a few handy in your purse. Also other meds like headache medicine, antacids (stuff like that)! ;)
If no tranquilizers order a cocktail on the plane to help yourself relax! :D:
I would bring that umbrella! A small fold up one you can pack in your suitcase. Somebody said just a hoody would be fine, but if it is raining when you are going to your business meeting in your business clothes you can't wear a hoody than. You would need an umbrella! ;) And hairdryers almost always are provided by the hotel. And i would leave the robe and slippers , the hotel rooms are heated well enough! ( But than I don't use robes and slippers even at home)! ;)
Hope I was of help! I have flown a pretty good amount of times!!
And do not overpack as well. Pack only the necessary stuff.
IllinoisTVFan 10-07-2018, 12:56 AM Thank you, all of you and yes you have all been so helpful. I am leaving on Wednesday and returning Sunday so I basically need four change of clothes (and an alternate, such as a workout outfit if I decide to go workout). Also, I don't think I'll spend a lot of time with my classmates since they are bringing their families, kids etc and I'm not crazy about babies/toddlers (and this is what most of them have). The conference on both Thursday and Friday are having an evening reception so I would rather attend those.
OH Nuts! 10-07-2018, 11:32 AM Well, I like to fly the way cats like to be given a bath. I fly maybe once every five years. I Believe in traveling as light as possible. IMO, you have waaay too much. I’d consolidate.
15. Shouldn’t the laptop provide all the services you need? Why do you need other devices? Only ONE book, if any at all. Couldn’t you find stuff to read/ look at on the laptop?
16. Minimize night clothing: pajamas (maybe one warm, one light)
17. Dress shoes, 1 pr sandals, 1 pr sneakers s/b plenty.
18. I could be biased here as I’m a guy and personally never wear any kind of jewelry: I’d do 2-3 pr earring, 1bracelet, 1 necklace. Maybe 2 of either the bracelet or necklace.
19. I’d definitely skip blanket and opt for 1-2 knock around sweater instead. Do you really need pillow? Sounds like a short flight. Or roll up the knock around sweater & put in plastic bag for pillow.
Toiletries: Airlines have a 3oz rule, so if you buy larger sizes of these these may get tossed by airport security. Most hotels offer complimentary toiletries. If you must bring some: opt for the mini travel sizes, or find a drug store where you’ll be and get stuff then (to fill in what hotel doesn’t provide.)
Also, many others above have made some GREAT suggestions; try to use some of them.
Have a great trip! BTW, I had a great trip on Delta. I was traveling to a funeral and happened to let the check in know. I was wearing a suit &. They ended up upgrading me!
Airlines that have bad reputations: Spirit & United. I never ever will fly either.
IllinoisTVFan 10-07-2018, 12:59 PM Yeah I am consolidating big time because some of it I don't need. For example, I'm not bringing my tablet now since I'll have my laptop and my phone. Also, since it'll be hot I don't need sweaters so I may bring one sweatshirt to wear if needed. I don't need my dryer or curler either since I don't curl my hair much and my hair dries fast anyway. I'm bringing one book and a logic puzzle book which will go in my laptop case. Granted I'll be bringing stuff home like souvenirs but chances are they will be things like shirts. Shoes I'm just bringing my moccasins, my flip flops (at the beach) and my tennis shoes. Jewelry I'll probably bring 2-3 pairs of earrings and a bracelet since I rarely wear anything else. I've been watching videos on YouTube on packing for weeks in a carry on and the tricks to do this, and if they can pack for weeks, I'm sure I can pack for days. I mean, next week at this time I will be traveling home so it's really just a long weekend. Basically I will arrive Wednesday night, and will be free until Thursday evening. Then all day Friday I'l be at the conference (until around 5pm or so) and same thing on Saturday. Then Sunday I will pack up for my evening flight.
IllinoisTVFan 10-16-2018, 12:02 AM Okay, an update.I ended up taking two bags, one a duffel bag and the second a carry on. I wasn't sure if it was small enough to carry on but it was except for one flight, which I will explain in a bit. Getting there was no problem with my luggage and the duffel bag wasn't too bag but flying home between things I added, like souvenirs and things I received from the conference made both bags heavy. I struggled but luckily many people helped me. The only time I had to check my luggage was because I was late getting to the terminal because I got lost and by then all the spaces were gone. If I fly again I will probably just check a bag and carry something lighter and bring less back. Then again the last time I flew was almost 30 years ago so who knows if I will ever fly again? I honestly prefer driving because of many factors, including that the conference ended on Saturday at 5pm and my flight wasn't until 5pm Sunday.
Wow, 30 years is a long time between flights. I would have thought you traveled more than that. People who were in show business usually have to do a lot of traveling as part of their job.
IllinoisTVFan 10-16-2018, 12:38 AM Oh, I've traveled more than that, this is just flying. Usually I would drive somewhere or drive with someone.
