Bob Newhart is celebrating his 89th birthday. Newhart studied business at Loyola University of Chicago, and worked for several years as an accountant and an advertising copywriter. He began making comedy demo tapes in the late fifties, was signed by Warner Brothers Records. His debut comedy album, The Button-Down Mind of Bob Newhart, became the first comedy album to reach #1 on the Billboard 200. Newhart won three Grammys in 1961, including Best New Artist and Album of the Year.

Newhart hosted an NBC variety show for one season in the early sixties, and made a long list of TV guest appearances. In 1972, Mary Tyler Moore and her husband, Grant Tinker, helped bring Newhart to prime time as the star of The Bob Newhart Show. Newhart starred for six seasons as Dr. Bob Hartley, a psychologist, and received two Golden Globe nominations during the show’s run.

In 1982, Newhart returned to prime time, starring for eight seasons as Dick Loudon, the owner/manager of a rural Vermont inn on Newhart. He received three Emmy nominations in the role, and as noted in our article two years ago, TV Guide rated the final episode of the series as the greatest series finale in TV history. Newhart’s subsequent attempts to return to series television have not been successful, but he has been nominated for three Emmys as the recurring character of Arthur Jeffries on The Big Bang Theory, winning for Outstanding Guest Actor in 2013.
