During its entire run, it received strong ratings. It was in the top 30 for the last three, peaking at #15 in Season 2. I mean it could've easily run a good 2-3 more years. Supposedly there were multiple factors for why Evening Shade was canceled in 1994 (https://www.upi.com/Archives/1994/05/17/Sun-sets-on-Evening-Shade/7355769147200/):
The production costs were very high due to the salaries of the large ensemble cast.

Burt Reynolds (http://articles.chicagotribune.com/1994-05-21/entertainment/9405210078_1_evening-shade-burt-reynolds-cbs-president-howard-stringer) was going through a high-profile divorce and reportedly wanted off the show.

The show was more geared toward an older audience and not the younger demographic that CBS craved. While its ratings on Monday night were similar to its competition (The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air and Blossom over at NBC), those shows pulled in younger viewers.
