View Full Version : My parents want me to learn how to drive
My dad just said to me that he really wants me to learn how to drive so I can pick him up when stuff such as appointments happen.
But I'm really afraid to to and always get a bad feeling when one of them mentions it. ohno: ohno:
Svenfan1234 08-25-2018, 01:34 PM At least they WANT you to. I want to get my driver's license and learn to drive and get a car but my parents aren't all that crazy about the idea. Next Spring I'm really going to have to learn so I can go to community college next fall. But, does your Dad not have his own car that he can drive to and from appointments?
Can you take a Drivers Ed. class to help you learn to drive? Or does your dad want to teach you? I started out on my brother's dirt bike and my uncle's tractor when I was around 13. Then moved on to the family car & my uncle's car, my uncle had more patience than my dad when it came to driving lessons. You could always practice on a road that doesn't have much traffic or even in a Mall parking lot before they open. I couldn't imagine not being able to drive, it just gives you so much freedom to go wherever you want.
Now my mother wishes that I should learn how to drive.
PhoenixAcres 08-25-2018, 04:32 PM To be honest this will be a good thing. Driving gives you enormous freedom and it's more or less a necessary skill. Being afraid is natural but practice will make it go away. You just have to get started.
I didn't want to drive either but I went ahead with it and got my license and now I'm content.

I agree; driving you enormous freedom, and after the initial fear, driving isn't that scary anymore. I highly recommend learning how to drive as soon as possible.
I have been driving for over 25 years, and I cannot imagine not having a car to take me places. Just imagine all the places you see and all the things that you can do independently now that you have your driver's license :)
biffbronson 08-25-2018, 09:34 PM This month marks 35 years since I started driving (man do I feel old! :(-)
It's not that hard to get started. Sometimes on a Sunday for example, you will find enormous, empty parking lots that are ideal for learning to become comfortable with a car.
You will likely become a better driver than 99% of the crazies out there...!
treky 08-26-2018, 12:24 AM I'm 60 years old and have NEVER, EVER, EVER driven in my life-and not by choice. It's because of this *** *** disability I have!!!:mad:

Don’t go above the speed limit, remember that slower traffic should stay in the right lane, always use your turn signals, and you’ll be fine.
So what I'll do if I end up driving is simply just take Drivers Ed.

That's usually a good start. I think that, also, depending on your state of course, that you can just take a driving test and get your license. But your parents probably want you to practice and learn first.

Or have a friend or a family member to teach how to drive. It is scary in the beginning, but once you get used to being behind the wheel of a car, it actually becomes easy and fun. And soon you would want to drive as much as possible.
But, first get your learner's permit at your local DMV. The test is not that difficult.

I tried learning how to drive twice with help from one of my parents, but the second time did not go over well at all.

I understand, my dad tried to teach me how to drive, and like you, it did not go well. I had boyfriend teach how to drive a car.

My parents have been that way with me for years! Though I'm the eldest of three children, I felt like I had to take the backseat!
But the best places to drive around is the cemetery...there's a lot of small drives. I'm a little shaky still, but I did back-up a vehicle yesterday...I do better driving into a driveway tho...

My dad has a car, but he went and dropped it off at the shop. He didn’t want to take my mother’s car because she wasn’t feeling well at the time.

Madge1957 08-28-2018, 05:56 AM I am 20, and still do not have my licence. I hope to drive soon, but I am scared of hitting animals, etc. My mom also thinks I am a buffoon, and would rather have me in a straight jacket, so that's held me back from driving as well.

When I drive someday, I'm hoping that I can get a nice car that is small and not too big.
