More proof positive that Uncle Charlie was sharp as a tack and funny as heck till the end, see him here in 1979 as he appeared on the Merv Griffin Show, skip to the 14 minute mark to see where Charlie enters and livens up the show. In a previous thread I had said Charlie was sharp till the end and someone else dared to disagree as is the wont of the contrary. Well, this one's for you and especially for the rest of us. Go to the 14 minute point:

Barry Livingston said in his book that William Demarest was having trouble remembering his lines towards the end of the show’s run. You can still be sharp in conversation and not be able to memorize a whole script. Those are different skill sets.

I skipped the Estelle Winwood part--you're right, Demarest sounds fine. He's as alert as anyone, sharp as a tack. 87 years old--wow! He shows no sign of dementia, and I have family knowledge of dementia/Alz.
He made that same coodley coo coo coo sound he did with the triplets on M3S.
As far as Livingston goes, I'm sure he never missed a line. Yeah, right.

I didn't think that was funny, I disagreed with the refined conclusion you kindly quoted. BUT this Uncle Charlie here in 1979 at 87 was hilarious, now you can laugh.:D
