The girls were undoubtedly sex objects for men and teenage boys whichever way you look at it, whether they were exploited by big business or empowering females the world over by breaking the mould. I do think there was a false premise by the John Forsythe character claiming that he had somehow improved their lives by removing them from showing kids across the road to situations which sometimes endangered their lives (Jacklyn Smith at the start seems to have forgotten that her character was shot in the head in one episode). I suppose if you frown upon sexual exploitation you would not like the show, but then nobody was forcing you to watch. On a personal note I'm glad that Kate Jackson has put on some weight; at one time I thought she was going the same way as Karen Carpenter.

Funny you mentioned Kate's figure, I've thought about this myself. She was looking very thin by the 3rd season, probably due to over-work and exhaustion, but she was nowhere near Karen's condition.

Being taken away from crossing guard duty (or clerical drudgery) is not something that should be taken so seriously. The point was that these were very capable young women whose abilities were being wasted in menial (though necessary) work. Danger is inherent in the work of any P.I. or cop, yet millions of people have chosen those professions. The same with firefighters and others. Charlie was hardly doing the women a disservice; they made their choice.
