Fox News mistakes Patti LaBelle for Aretha Franklin (https://www.thedailybeast.com/fox-news-mistakes-patti-labelle-for-aretha-franklin)
A photo of singer Patti LaBelle, who had a longstanding feud with The Queen of Soul, was shown in the background during a brief America's Newsroom segment paying tribute to Franklin. UPDATE: Fox News has apologized (https://www.thewrap.com/fox-news-apologizes-using-patti-labelles-photo-aretha-franklin-tribute/): “We sincerely apologize to Aretha Franklin’s family and friends," Fox News' Jessica Santostefano said in a statement to The Wrap. "Our intention was to honor the icon using a secondary image of her performing with Patti LaBelle in the full screen graphic, but the image of Ms. Franklin was obscured in that process, which we deeply regret.”

Fox News made another mistake in its apology for Aretha Franklin-Patti LaBelle mix-up (https://ew.com/news/2018/08/16/fox-news-doubles-down-defends-patti-labelle-photo-aretha-franklin-tribute/)
https://d1qxviojg2h5lt.cloudfront.net/images/01CN2VXATM7H3JDYA77J5N1WVR/aretha.franklin.patti.labelle.png
In honoring The Queen of Soul, the cable news network used an image in the background of Patti LaBelle performing (https://www.thedailybeast.com/fox-news-mistakes-patti-labelle-for-aretha-franklin) for President Obama on PBS' Women of Soul: In Performance at the White House (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RxZS4Jz8njs) special, which aired in 2014. “We sincerely apologize to Aretha Franklin’s family and friends," Fox News spokesperson Jessica Santostefano explained in a statement. "Our intention was to honor the icon using a secondary image of her performing with Patti LaBelle in the full screen graphic, but the image of Ms. Franklin was obscured in that process, which we deeply regret." The problem is that LaBelle and Franklin never performed together on the special. Franklin did perform at the same event. When EW inquired about the second mistake, Fox News was unable to explain why its statement of apology was erroneous.

Ariana Grande reportedly broke down in tears while performing an Aretha Franklin tribute on The Tonight Show (http://www.tmz.com/2018/08/16/ariana-grande-tonight-show-aretha-franklin-natural-woman-cries/)
The singer, who was supposed to do a comedy skit with Jimmy Fallon during Thursday's visit, initially declined a request to do a tribute to The Queen of Soul, according to TMZ. But Questlove changed her mind. "Ariana brought the house down and got a standing O. We're told when Ariana left the stage she broke down in tears," says TMZ, which adds that her performance will open Thursday's Tonight Show.

Aretha Franklin dies: Remembering The Queen of Soul's most memorable TV performances (https://www.vox.com/culture/2018/8/16/17688488/aretha-franklin-legendary-performance-queen-of-soul)

"Aretha Franklin's was the voice of the 20th century," (https://slate.com/culture/2018/08/aretha-franklin-dead-the-singer-was-the-defining-voice-of-the-20th-century.html) says Jack Hamilton in a tribute to the iconic performer. "No other singer left such a definitive mark on the course of popular music—simply put, there is singing before Aretha Franklin, and there is singing after her." Franklin's voice made its TV debut at age 19 on Jack Paar's Tonight Show. By her third TV appearance, singing "Won't Be Long" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=G1p92gQTQCg) on The Steve Allen Show in 1964, "her mastery of both the piano and her performance was captivating," says Naima Cochrane. In 1973, Franklin became one of the rare performers to sing live on Soul Train (most performers used lip-sync tracks), singing "Day Dreaming." (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=bmKETyCPl6k) Introducing this performance, host Don Cornelius said, “I consider myself very fortunate to have lived on earth during her career, and that I was able to see and hear what she has done. She deserves all the titles she has been given, for she is the Queen.” In 2014, Franklin showed that her voice was still great while performing a cover of Adele's "Rolling in the Deep" (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=mvjS8qjqrqQ) on The Late Show with David Letterman. "In this Letterman performance," says Cochrane, "Franklin brought back longtime backing vocalist Cissy Houston (who possibly didn’t care to be there, judging from her expressions during the performance), and proved she hadn’t lost a step or a note, nor had her unique gift for transforming and elevating already iconic songs faded. In her style of transforming the end of a song, she transitions into 'Ain’t No Mountain High Enough,' playing to the audience with her hand on her hip as though to emphasize her continued reign."

Longtime Grammys producer Ken Ehrlich recalls Franklin saving him in 1998 when she agreed to sing "Nessum Dorma" at the last minute because Luciano Pavarotti was too ill (https://variety.com/2018/music/news/aretha-franklin-ken-ehrlich-grammy-producer-1202907543/)

Franklin made only one TV acting appearance, on Room 222 in 1971 (https://www.metv.com/stories/aretha-franklin-made-one-tv-acting-appearance-in-her-career-on-room-222)

Someone needs to tell that girl that if she got to spend any time with Aretha, she needs to hang on to them experience(s) with all that she has because not everyone can have such a thing with their favorite singers. Its too late for me to spend any time with my newest favorite because I didn't officially discover him until almost 20 years after his departure.

P.S. My favorite is at the top of the picture, dear God in Heaven, what were you doing on the day of his suicide??? If I had not been a teenager still, I would've done whatever I could to stop him, I love him SO much!!! :crying: :crying: :crying:

Madonna responds to Aretha Franklin VMA backlash: "I did not intend to do a tribute to her!" (http://www.instagram.com/p/Bmv1ypbgp9y/)

Madonna was accused of everything from cultural appropriation (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/vmas-madonna-tribute-aretha-franklin-prompts-backlash-charges-culture-appropriation-1136049) for wearing traditional African garb to making her tribute to The Queen of Soul all about herself (https://themuse.jezebel.com/for-aretha-franklin-vmas-tribute-madonna-tells-a-long-1828481340) during her six-minute speech (http://www.mtv.com/video-clips/6h804a/vma-2018-madonna-takes-the-vma-stage) at last night's MTV VMAs. Madonna responded to the backlash on Instagram this morning, saying she wasn't supposed to do a tribute in the first place. "Just to clarify: I was asked to present video of the year by MTV!" she wrote. "And then they asked me to share any anecdotes I had in my career connected to Aretha Franklin! I shared a part of my journey and thanked Aretha for inspiring me along the way. I did not intend to do a tribute to her! That would be impossible in 2 minutes with all the noise and tinsel of an award show. I could never do her justice in this context or environment. Unfortunately most people have short attention spans, and are so quick to judge. I love Aretha! R.E.S.P.E.C.T."

ALSO:

The VMAs were bound to get it wrong while chasing controversy (https://www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2018/08/madonnas-aretha-franklin-speech-pays-tribute-to-madonna/568009/): "Her speech could have been fine, or even excellent. But instead the 'tribute' mythologized Madonna way more than it did Franklin."

Can we stop having Madonna do tributes? She received similar backlash with her 2016 Billboard Music Awards tribute to Prince (https://blavity.com/madonna-gives-awful-tribute-to-aretha-franklin-proves-she-can-no-longer-be-left-in-charge-of-tributes-to-black-icons)

Twitter was merciless with Madonna (https://thegrapevine.theroot.com/yall-should-have-known-better-than-to-task-madonna-with-1828485934): "I thought Madonna was supposed to be paying homage to Aretha but I all heard was her paying homage to herself," tweeted Charlamagne Tha God

How I discovered Aretha Franklin was when I went to Target and in their electronics clearance section was a basket of clearance cds and in the basket was Aretha Franklin cds and I grabbed the first Aretha Franklin cd I saw and dropped it in the shopping cart and Mom noticed the Aretha cd in the cart and said "Bestie I never knew you liked Aretha Franklin" and I said yes she's cool. And so that cd marked the start of an Aretha Franklin library in my cd collection and so I got the album I Never Loved A Man on cd from Goodwill and her 2003 album So Darn Happy "I can't type the actual name of the cd because the actual title has a swear word so I used the word darn in it's place" and then I got her Greatest Hits cd from Arista that came out in 1994 and it's a great album. Now I want Who's Zooming Who and Aretha's album Aretha from 1986. It's a shame that Aretha Franklin is now gone because I would've loved to have seen what new cds she would've released but I think Aretha's legacy will be well known as Sam Cooke's or James Brown's legacy because of her talent
