View Full Version : Do you remember? Charlotte Rae's 90th Birthday Party on The Hallmark Channel
'80sSitcoms 08-06-2018, 11:52 AM Remember a couple of years ago when The Hallmark Channel celebrated Charlotte Rae's 90th birthday with a two-hour (!) installment of "Home and Family"? It was on February 15, 2016.
Let's share our memories of that special milestone event here. At least we can have this as a sort of time capsule of this unbelievably awesome event.
I had this on my DVR for a while but then it got wiped out (!), but luckily I discovered that I had emailed a good friend and fellow FOL fan about this event. I emailed him excited when I heard it was happening, and I emailed him some thoughts/feedback after I watched it. I am SO thankful I did, because I don't know if anyone captured it to upload anywhere, so at least I have this to go by for my "memory diary":
-------------------------------------------------
WOW what a show! Molly Ringwald!! WOW! And Goerge Clooney! WOW!! I NEVER would have expected him to have partaken in this! How AWESOME he's not so "Hollywood" that he's forgotten his humble, goofy, awkward beginnings, lol. I love that. I'm not a GC fan per se (the only movie of his I've seen is O Brother, Where Art Thou, and that was on videotape in the 1990s at the rental of my mother, lol, and I never watched ER---I only saw he and Noah cross-over onto Friends during the first season), but I totally respect him for this. Way to go, George!
And Molly! Okay, I accidentally found out before-hand that Molly was gonna be in a video message, which I wish I hadn't known because I love fun surprises, but that was so great! And so nice to hear Lisa and Kim acknowledge the "lost girls" (though Cindy didn't get any lines in flashbacks, that sucked [neither did Nancy] ). Since Molly was crushed and then bitter after having been let go from the show, and didn't take part in "The Little Chill" (if she was even invited; I think she was, but declined? I think that's what I heard...) I think it was very sweet of her to take part in this by sending Charlotte a video birthday message. However, when she said she was glad to wish her a 90th birthday and said "and I hope to be able to wish you a happy 91st", I thought she was gonna say "and I hope to be able to wish you a happy 100th" or at least "95th", but 91?? That sounds like she doesn't have much faith in her! LOL...just kinda shocked me as tacky, haha, though I know she didn't mean it like that. And I wish she had said something to "the girls" in the video, but maybe she didn't know this would have been shown at a "reunion"-type show (or maybe she did), or that some of the other girls would see it, but oh well. It's just awesome she was a part of this.
And "Willis" showed up! I saw an Instagram pic so knew he would, but I forgot. And then he walked in and I was like "Whoa!" and I LOVE that Kim was so excited to see Todd! Tootie and Willis hung out some on Diff'rent Strokes, and Blair got Willis to be her Countess Calvay deliveryboy, so I loved seeing him with these FOL cast members he had interacted with before.
Gloria Loring had never met any of the FOL cast before! Whoa! And I knew there was an extra verse to the theme song, as I have a TV theme song book that has the full FOL song in it. So great to see her rock it out and everyone loving it!
So Molly was involved, but not the other lost girls; oh man that would have been so great to see them in video or, even better, on the couch! And by the way, how GREAT do Lisa and Kim look??
How about that intro with the song and clips of the stars and H&F hosts? That was great! I loved that that Ken guy was such a roller-skate-Tootie fan, but he didn't even know her catchphrase! How embarrassing, lol...and they never did use that one a lot, it's more in memory than it was used on the show.
Mindy's video message was sweet, but bittersweet; now that we know Charlotte tried to "reach out to her" while on the show, but Mindy never really "took to her wing" so to speak. But I like that Mindy took part and was sincere, and I love the special emphasis she pointed about her scene with Charlotte in season 5 when Natalie's father died (FATHER Charlotte, FATHER---not grandmother!! lol) and Mindy felt so connected with Charlotte as an actress and that spurned on her desire for acting.
I LOVED all the gushing and memories in the living room set! I was just sitting there Indian-style on my couch resting my arms on a pillow in my lap soaking up every Eastland moment! And I loved what Lisa said about the testament of why Mrs. Garrett was so loved and why she was so popular. She really hit the nail on the head! And Kim too, and I loved when Mark Steines addressed Kim gazing lovingly at Charlotte and asked what she was thinking about that made her do that, and she talked about how it was just 9 years of memories flashing on her (although with Charlotte it was only 7 years and 2 episodes of memories, but who's counting, haha).
Oh, and how about Kim and that woman host almost getting into a fight over Todd Bridges not being dead? LOL...I was feeling very awkward there, but luckily it blew over before they came to "The Real Housewives of Peekskill" blows, haha.
And "Jo" in the kitchen! What Skype fun with Nancy, such nice nostalgic sincerity, regardless of the garbled part where she was talking about something about the art directors and the beautiful set (which I wish we got to hear exactly what she said). And I LOVE that she stole the Edna's Edibles open/close sign! Hahaha that's awesome! And the others had no idea!
And by the way, the job they did on theming the kitchen to resemble Edna's Edibles really sucked, lol.
And how about Cousin Geri's Sesame Street story? I never heard that either. It's "funny", and cute, but I can't help but feel so bad for all those kids who screamed "She killed Big Bird!!"---!---yikes! Poor things... :-( (shame on you, Cousin Geri! lol) It is hard to believe that they didn't rehearse with skates though, especially with someone with a disability, you'd think they'd wanna really get it down pat. I wonder what poor Caroll Spinney thought of the incident? He didn't mention it in his book, or his Emmy Legends interview, or I Am Big Bird.

'80sSitcoms 08-06-2018, 11:53 AM And part of my friend's feedback (most of what else he said was responding to the things I talked about already) :
I loved Kim's story about falling down the Drummond staircase!!! She said, "I went down like Aunt Bunny!" which I had no idea what she meant, then looked it up to realize it's a reference to a story Eddie Murphy tells in Delirious.
And Gloria Loring was so thrilled to be there! She sounded great and really "got her life" at the end of the song, singing her little heart out!
Oh, and Kim mentioned on her Instagram that she remembered "the banana story" that George told!

George Clooney has a touching message for Charlotte Rae at ‘Facts of Life’ reunion
Hallmark Channel’s “Home & Family” is welcoming some special guests Monday (Feb. 15) when the “Facts of Life” cast reunites nearly 30 years after the sitcom went off the air. All the familiar faces are there — Charlotte Rae, Lisa Whelchel, Kim Fields, Geri Jewell — but there are also a few surprise guests, including George Clooney.
Clooney appeared on “Facts of Life” from 1985 to 1987, his “first regular job on a television series.” In this sneak peek at his video message, Clooney has some kind words for Rae, a.k.a. Mrs. Garrett.
“Charlotte, well listen — I have to say, you were such an incredible force in the early part of my career. In mid-1985 I came on the show, it was my first regular job on a television series and you were funny and kind and you made a very young, not very skilled actor feel very much at home,” says Clooney, going on to tell a story about Rae wandering around the set holding a banana, which made the whole cast and crew crack up.
“I couldn’t be happier for you, and I couldn’t be more thankful for all the kindness you showed a young, not very bright actor. Congratulations,” he concludes.

Does anyone have the full version of this?
'80sSitcoms 08-06-2018, 12:25 PM I found some more clips (http://www.hallmarkchannel.com/home-and-family/monday-february-15th-2016) from Hallmark's site!!
1. Almost 7 minutes of the beginning, including Mindy's video message!
2. Over 8 minutes in the poor tribute to Edna's Edibles with Lisa's recipe for Mexican cornbread, and Nancy's Skype interview!
3. Over 6 1/2 minutes of of time with Kim and celebrating Tootie's skates with bedazzling! lol
Oh, how I wish that Molly's video message were there too...still, these are fantastic finds for not having a recording of the show!

RetroGuy2000 08-07-2018, 09:29 AM This was an amazing special, and I'm sad I never caught it when it was on the air. However, the bits and pieces I have seen were very cool. I hope Hallmark will rerun it, or air another special, after Charlotte's passing.
'80sSitcoms 08-07-2018, 11:01 AM Well, I've started campaigning. I just now composed an email to viewers@crownmedia.com, and here it is:
----------------------------------------------
Good day Crown Media,
In light of the passing of beloved actress Charlotte Rae, I am requesting that you please rerun the 2/15/2016 installment of The Hallmark Channel's 'Home and Family" which was a 2-hour event dedicated to celebrating Ms. Rae's 90th birthday. It was a tremendous milestone for fans of The Facts of Life and Charlotte Rae (involving even Molly Ringwald and George Clooney), and it would be wonderful if this could be seen again.
Whether it could be rerun on The Hallmark Channel as a special encore presentation to honor her, or if The Hallmark Channel could upload the full show on their YouTube channel, I know from seeing the outpouring of love for Charlotte Rae online that this would be a treasured privilege to see this episode again (some fans are saying they did not get to see it the first time around, and would love an opportunity to watch it).
Thank you kindly for your consideration, and may we all take the love and wisdom of "Mrs. Garrett" with us,
(and then I signed it)
Good luck! Hopefully you'll get a response back!
RetroGuy2000 08-07-2018, 04:23 PM I also emailed Crown Media with a request for a special or to put the existing special up on the web.

'80sSitcoms 08-10-2018, 09:46 AM Well, I did get a generalized response back; at least it's an acknowledgment:
Thank you for contacting Crown Media Family Networks, home of the Hallmark Channel! Thank you for your suggestions. We'll pass your suggestions along to our appropriate team!
I hope that they consider re-airing it again.
'80sSitcoms 08-10-2018, 10:55 AM Me too; and I hope others are also reaching out through these various avenues.

'80sSitcoms 02-08-2019, 06:08 PM Here's a pic of where Nancy showed off the Edna's Edibles sign she stole from the set when they got rid of the store!
It was really funny, she admitted she took the sign, then showed it off, and Lisa joked something about, "Well, what do you expect? After all, she was Jo!"

'80sSitcoms 03-25-2020, 01:44 AM Kenny Rogers passed away this past weekend, and the RFD cable channel paid tribute by re-airing what I assume was his last sit-down hour-long interview on a show that channel does. It was so nice to see. I'm not a big Kenny Rogers fan per se, but being a child of the 80s who grew up in "Sue Ann country", he was definitely a constant presence in my childhood on the radio when our family was in the car, and on country music awards shows (we only got a few networks on TV---and no cable---so awards shows and beauty pageants were EVENTS for our family to watch, lol). So it was heartwarming and bittersweet to get to spend an hour watching Kenny talk about his life and career. That was wonderful of the channel to share that with viewers again after his passing.
And of course I thought of the Hallmark Channel and how we reached out to them after Charlotte's passing to please, please re-air Charlott'es 2-hour 90th birthday special they did for her, but to no avail. That really is a shame.
Maybe since the show is celebrating its 40th anniversary, we can try again, and point out what RFD did for Kenny and his fans. I was just saddened while watching Kenny to think of what a beautiful tribute Hallmark has for Charlotte, and they're just keeping it shelved away. :(

My parents were huge Kenny Rogers fans, so I grew up on "The Gambler", "Coward of the County", etc. They had all his albums. I caught the second half of CMT's Kenny Rogers tribute this week, and was surprised by how BLACK his hair was, as a younger performer. I never knew.
We also spent several summers vacationing in Tennessee, visiting Dollywood (at the time, Dolly had a TV show), Chattanooga, and Nashville, where we got to meet Minnie Pearl and other C&W celebs. Kenny Rogers' music was a presence everywhere. "Sue Ann country" indeed!
The specials for Kenny Rogers have been very nice indeed.
I'm happy to help with any write-in campaign to re-run the special, as a tribute to Charlotte, who "helped save an entire network".

Who knows, maybe Hallmark thought a show celebrating Charlotte's birthday so soon after her passing would have been in bad taste. But it was such a joyous and wonderful tribute, and it was 2 hours for her. That was astounding.
And great point about her status!
RetroGuy2000 03-25-2020, 02:23 AM Wow, I had no idea you'd been to that part of the country! lol
Oh, yes. We also traveled through southern Illinois and much of Kentucky, which is beautiful country. But Kentucky just doesn't have the big entertainment capitals like Tennessee does. I really wonder why.
My biggest memory of Kentucky was stopping at a Cracker Barrel, and they had printed maps of Kentucky on the menu... but the maps were backwards!

Well, in that region really I just think of Tennessee as having "entertainment capitals", with Georgia having Atlanta. And that's about it, lol.

Thank you, '80s!!!!!
So much to discuss! The banana cream pies! The video message itself! Todd and Kim together again! And seeing Todd and Charlotte together is also adorable! The story of the girl hitting Kim is not a story I had heard before.
Lisa mentions the Cast Purge, "Not only Molly, but Felice and Julie, and everybody else..." She just "Nancied" Julie Anne!

RetroGuy2000 04-09-2020, 05:08 AM Lisa's nose twitch is SOOOOO cute!
And I like that the producers included clips that featured Kim, Lisa, and Molly with Charlotte, since the reunion revolved around the three of them honoring Charlotte. Nice touch!

80s Dude 04-09-2020, 11:27 AM I like her story how Molly's mother brought her that desert. I think Molly's mother ran a bakery. Also like the story how Charlotte sent Molly some flowers when she was singing in a jazz band some years ago.

Can you believe your luck?? A new in-depth documentary AND these relics within the same month?!? WOW!!
I'm so glad you got to see them! Last night after I posted them I saw your name was off the "online users" list on the board, and I was like, "NOOOOO!! Retro, COME BACK!! YOU HAVE TO SEE THIS!!"
So much to discuss!
SO much!! popcorn:
The banana cream pies!
I'd prefer a backtage story about Molly herself, but that's still so neat to hear!
The video message itself!
She appreciated Charlotte's talent working with her on the show! That was SO great to hear!
Todd and Kim together again! And seeing Todd and Charlotte together is also adorable!
And it's also so great with Lisa too, because it's like a reunion of sorts and "Bought and Sold" with Mrs. Garrett, Tootie, Blair, and Willis bringing in Blair's inventory of Countess Calvet products!
It is nice to see Todd there, but OMG if only it had been Felice and the 2 Julies!!!!
And it was cool to hear Kim talking of what "Starstruck" meant to her!
Lisa mentions the Cast Purge, "Not only Molly, but Felice and Julie, and everybody else..." She just "Nancied" Julie Anne!
Well, at least she still referenced her!
And yes, Lisa mentioned the purge!! I kept that secret in my alert message here as a special little "Easter egg"! ;)
And she said "not only Molly", and, "we were all close"---they were ALL close, I LOVE that!! :loveya:
Lisa's nose twitch is SOOOOO cute!
I LOVE Charlotte's old lady way of saying, "It made her look a little like a pig!" So cute! pig:
Also like the story how Charlotte sent Molly some flowers when she was singing in a jazz band some years ago.
I think she meant "Sweet Charity" the Broadway show.
What a TREASURE!!
Now if the other clips I've shared before are still up, we have a lot of this show preserved!

Oh my god! LISA was fantastic when she said: "I just had one of my brilliant ideas!" and the thing she did with her nose too lol!
Thumbs up for part 1 80sSitcom!:wave::wave:
valentina warner 04-09-2020, 02:50 PM Part 2 was great too: seeing MOLLY, GEORGE and TODD was just fantastic and they all looked great!
Thank you so much for sharing it with us 80sSitcom!
RetroGuy2000 04-09-2020, 03:02 PM I like her story how Molly's mother brought her that desert. I think Molly's mother ran a bakery. Also like the story how Charlotte sent Molly some flowers when she was singing in a jazz band some years ago.
Wait... Molly's mom ran a bakery?! That's so cool!

Yes, I loved both of those things!
RetroGuy2000 04-09-2020, 03:04 PM With this video being titled Facts of Life Reunion Sow Part 1 (https://www.facebook.com/HomeandFamilyShow/videos/959689957444505/), I thought maybe they were going to bring back Cindy's pig! ;)

When I saw that I laughed because I thought how appropriate that is, given Lisa does her "pig nose" in part 1!
oink! pig: oink!
"It made her look a little like a pig!"
RetroGuy2000 04-09-2020, 03:08 PM How could they leave out Julie Ann?
It takes just as much effort to say "and the rest" as it does to say "Julie Anne".

Haha! Good one!
'80sSitcoms 04-09-2020, 03:13 PM Yeah they didn't "leave out" Julie Anne. That's what the "and everybody else" was. :)
But Lisa's over 50, and since there were (actually not) too many girls, she may have been thinking of "10, 12 girls" so wanted to cover her bases by saying "and everybody else", lol.
RetroGuy2000 04-09-2020, 03:21 PM I KNEW you would be "over the Peekskill moon" with this!!
Indeed I am. Thanks again. seeing Molly "come back to Eastland" was priceless.
Can you believe your luck?? A new in-depth documentary AND these relics within the same month?!? WOW!!
Yes, it's crazy!
I'd prefer a backtage story about Molly herself, but that's still so neat to hear!
The nice thing is that it's personal, and something we haven't heard before. I loved that we got a lot of that in this interview. We didn't need to hear about "the fats of life" or Nancy McKeon "saving the show". We got info about Kim and Todd in the parade, Molly's mom baking banana cream pies, Lisa doing her pig nose impression, and Molly and Charlotte reuniting after 40 years. LOVED. IT.
She appreciated Charlotte's talent working with her on the show! That was SO great to hear!
Yes, it is.
That would have been nice, but I feel like we almost got that a few weeks ago: Julie Pie, Julie Anne, Felice, John, Jenny, and even Geri thrown into the Eastland mix. All that was missing was Molly, and we have her, now, too. Mmm-mm-mmm!!! </FOL theme song hum>
And it was cool to hear Kim talking of what "Starstruck" meant to her!
Oh, yes! Definitely! What a nice, insightful moment! Of course that would mean a lot to her! A dramatic Tootie episode!
And she said "not only Molly", and, "we were all close"---they were ALL close, I LOVE that!! :loveya:
I love that, too. Molly is at last included in "our group".
'80sSitcoms 04-09-2020, 03:30 PM Indeed I am. Thanks again. seeing Molly "come back to Eastland" was priceless.
Isn't it?? Just imagine being me seeing this 4 years ago and having absolutely no idea MOLLY RINGWALD was gonna show up.
:eek2:
Needless to say, I was THRILLED!

Well, and that's a thing I found lacking in the new documentary: "cross-talk" of the cast. Of course I LOVE hearing what they have to say, but it seems they were asked just about themselves, and not about their co-stars. For instance, we have Felice talking about Molly on one of the S1&2 DVD bonus features, and Lisa talking about Julie Anne, and Mindy talking about Felice, and I LOVE THAT. I wish they had included that kind of questioning in the new documentary.
So, instead of Todd, who was nice to see, I do wish we could have had the Lost Girls on the couch reminiscing in true reunion style like Lisa and Kim get to do with Char.
Mmm-mm-mmm!!! </FOL theme song hum>
Oh, the theme song, ha! Since you used hyphens, it looks like a "delicious" remark, like right after you've eaten one of Mrs. Ringwald's banana cream pies: "mm-mm-mm!" That's how I read it.
For the theme song, I'd probably go, "mmmmMMMMMMMMMM!" lol
I love that, too. Molly is at last included in "our group".
At last!

I see your point, but we did get some cross-talk: Jenny talking about Charlotte, John talking about Charlotte, Julie Pie talking about Jenny, Julie Pie talking about Lisa, Eve Brandstein talking about Molly, Asaad Kelada talking about Geri, and Julie Pie talking about meeting the girls at Denny's.
So, instead of Todd, who was nice to see, I do wish we could have had the Lost Girls on the couch reminiscing in true reunion style like Lisa and Kim get to do with Char.
Maybe someday it will happen. But I won't hold my breath! :(

And I see your point, but I specifically meant girl cross-talk. The only here that fits is Julie Pie talking about the rice pudding, and then about her coughing and gagging on the tea-smoking and Lisa laughing at her AND OMG I WANT TO SEE FOOTAGE OF THAT. :brent
Lorimar Television 04-09-2020, 08:46 PM Kinda felt like the first season Gilligan's Island: "We missed Molly, Felice, Julie, and the rest!"
 Exactly!
'80sSitcoms 04-10-2020, 01:52 AM From the first thread on this 4 years ago, video of the entire special is allegedly here: http://www.hallmarkchanneleverywhere.com/mb?NodeID=29&TVEMovieID=526
But, when I click it, it brings up a warning saying your connection is not secure, so I'm scared to click on through that. :lookaroun

They said that Jo and Natalie would be coming, but neither showed up for the Hallmark reunion.

Well Nancy McKeon wasn't there in person, but she did join via Skype (or something) for the kitchen segment. And I think they showed a Mindy pre-recorded video near the beginning.

Do you mean for the Home and Garden reunion?
'80sSitcoms 12-14-2020, 09:39 PM Do you mean for the Home and Garden reunion?
I mean for the Hallmark Charlotte's birthday one.
80s Dude 12-14-2020, 09:43 PM Wrong thread.
'80sSitcoms 12-14-2020, 09:52 PM Wrong thread.
That's what this thread's about: Charlotte's 90th birthday bash/reunion on Hallmark.
80s Dude 12-15-2020, 07:53 AM I wished they showed the segment where Nancy M. and Mindy appeared on Facebook or YouTube.
'80sSitcoms 12-15-2020, 07:09 PM I think they did, on Facebook? When they uploaded "parts" of it?
80s Dude 12-15-2020, 11:11 PM I think they did, on Facebook? When they uploaded "parts" of it?
I only saw two parts. None with Mindy and Nancy M. or Gloria Loring singing the classic theme.
