Julie Anne played Cindy. What was her best episode?

'80sSitcoms

My vote is "tiered"...her best episode was RH, being her meatiest, with R coming in 2nd (no racing puns intended, haha).

I voted similarly, with Rough Housing and Running being two of my choices (the third being The Little Chill).

Maybe for the way Cindy rebelliously refuses to go into the kitchen and bring out the cheese dip?

Hahaha! You'll never let her live down that teen rebellion cheese dip!

RetroGuy2000

Isn't that her big moment in that episode?

I imagine Mrs. Garrett must have had a heart-to-heart talk with Cindy later in the episode: "Cindy, look in that mirror. When I look in that mirror, I see a girl who could bring out the cheese dip. But you... you didn't believe in yourself. And no one got any cheese dip. Now, was that the right thing to do?"

Then Cindy agreed that she should have believed in herself, and brought out the cheese dip. They would have hugged, and then they would have gone downstairs together, arm in arm, so Cindy could bring in the cheese dip. The audience claps as they freeze-frame on Cindy and Mrs. Garrett, cheese dip in tow.

I suspect that part of the episode was cut for time, but someone here has seen the uncut version of the episode, and voted for "Like Mother, Like Daughter" after seeing the full version, as the writers intended.

We're up to five votes, now, and the latest vote is for "Flash Flood". Now that is an interesting vote! As we've discussed, the scene with Cindy having retrieved her spiked shoes from the basement is one of the most dramatic moments of the first season.

^---Indeed, perhaps the most dramatic moment of the entire first season. It chilled me to the bone as a child! (and not because I was wet from floodwaters, lol) And this episode contains perhaps the funniest moment of the entire first season---Nancy's obstinate umbrella! :rotflmao:

^---Indeed, perhaps the most dramatic moment of the entire first season. It chilled me to the bone as a child! (and not because I was wet from floodwaters, lol)

Haha!

Yes, I agree it's one of the most dramatic moments of S1, along with Mrs. Garrett ripping the photo of Sue Ann and Cindy in half in "Running", Sue Ann fainting in "Dieting", and Blair and Steve in the van in "The Facts of Love". It's interesting that two of the (IMO) four most dramatic moments of the season feature a scene with Mrs. Garrett and Cindy.

Then again, Julie Anne had some serious acting chops prior to FOL.

And this episode contains perhaps the funniest moment of the entire first season---Nancy's obstinate umbrella! :rotflmao:

Ah, yes! The umbrella that opens too late! What a relate-able scene, too: Nancy is an everyman, here, or maybe the "lovable loser": Charlie Brown, with his kite stuck in the tree has nothing on Nancy and her disobedient umbrella.

Yes, I agree it's one of the most dramatic moments of S1, along with Mrs. Garrett ripping the photo of Sue Ann and Cindy in half in "Running"

OMG, angry Mrs. Garrett!! YES...how can you ever forget the intense fury in her voice when she screams, "Now no one has to stand next to someone she hates!!" Man, she made everything STOP around you when she did that line. And the girls are stunned, and Cindy's strong love for her best friend melts her angry heart by letting her speak up to Garrett's Fury, "I never said I hated her!" And then Mrs. Garrett is upset with our Cindy!* She barks back at this charge of hers, "Well you've both been actin' like it! " (!!)

And she's right! (of course she's right, she's Mrs. Garrett, haha)

*(she's upset with Sue Ann too of course, I was just making my point with Cindy there, lol)

It was so interesting seeing Mrs. Garrett have to take this angle of "parenting" with her girls!

Sue Ann fainting in "Dieting", and Blair and Steve in the van in "The Facts of Love".

I don't really remember those as much from childhood. Well, the van a little bit.

It's interesting that two of the (IMO) four most dramatic moments of the season feature a scene with Mrs. Garrett and Cindy.

Or even three of the five---don't forget the Cindy vs Sue Ann all-star slug-out! I remember so vividly being a little boy and that fight being the most intense thing I ever saw on TV, making me go:  And there was so much happening! Sue Ann going after Cindy, Cindy attacking Sue Ann, Blair getting hit with that runaway left hook, Molly jumping on the chair taking pictures of the fighters, Nancy compassionately helping Blair sit up on the couch and looking after her, Blair crying while covering her injured face, girls screaming, i-it was almost too much for a little child watching to take! That's why it's cemented so strongly in my memory!

Because I saw these shows in syndicated reruns as a child, I even remember when I would see it was "the running" episode, and be SO excited I'd get to see "the big fight scene" again!

flash flood seeing her come in soaked n wet looking for her skates

She was coming up from the basement, where she went down to get her "spikes" (cleats), which were soaked and flooded with floodwater. It's such an iconic Cindy scene---it's even the "Cindy clip" in the closing credits for all 9 episodes of spring 1980! (when the series was re-tooled a bit after the first 4 episodes in 1979) I always love that they chose that dramatic moment for Cindy to show in the closing credits.

I definitely agree, Mike: the scene with Cindy coming in all dripping wet, Mrs. Garrett telling her she could have been electrocuted, was definitely a top moment for Cindy.

I love that whole scene. Just so excellent. And then the revelation... she gave them the wrong halves on purpose.

Thanks for reminding me of that one. You're right... that is also in the top 5, for sure!

Because I saw these shows in syndicated reruns as a child, I even remember when I would see it was "the running" episode, and be SO excited I'd get to see "the big fight scene" again!

We watched the daytime airings of FOL in the early '80s in the summer, when NBC ran the reruns. I was 9 and my sister was 7 when we first started watching on a regular basis. My sister liked Tootie so much that she got a matching red raincoat just like Tootie's in "Flash Flood".

We liked the show so much that we started watching the evening episodes on a regular basis, too. At that time, we didn't understand that the daytime episodes were repeats: since we hadn't seen most of them before, how could they be repeats? We couldn't understand why some of the characters had mysteriously vanished, and why everyone was suddenly working in a bakery, when they were in a school in the daytime episodes.

It wasn't until 1997, when I first went online, that the mystery of the disappearing characters began to be solved. I also bought a book called The Complete Directory to Prime Time Television, 1948-Present, which explained even more. The E! documentary in 1999, and others, helped fill in the blanks.

To me it was the Funniest. Thing. EVER. :rotflmao: I still remember my first time seeing that!!

It is genuinely funny, along with so many other great Eastland moments.

You were in the dark (without "electrility"!) until 1997?? Wow!

Well, I guess you mean you obviously noticed the changes, but didn't know the reasons behind them until 1997 (author's emphasis, haha).

I didn't see the "post-Eastland" shows until later on, so for a while my FOL world was only the dorm and the cafeteria, so I noticed they just "changed the show" after season 1.

Instead of the rice pudding? Ahahahaha!

... You know, that gives me a thought: in Season One, Sue Ann smashes Blair's face in rice pudding. At the beginning of Season Two, Blair smashes pie into Margo's face. That moment is like a call-back to Season One; they are only separated by seven episodes, and serve as sort of "book ends": here is where we were, and here is where we are going.

Even though the only Lost Girl who appears in that episode is Molly, sue Ann's presence is still felt, here: Blair has learned from Sue Ann that when someone upsets you, it's okay to smash their face into food.

That episode was definitely one of her stronger episodes. We got to see Julie Anne do some gymnastics, and practice pugilistics on Sue Ann.

Julie Anne is visibly taller and thinner in "Running" than she was in "Rough Housing", too, which changes things up a bit: here, she could credibly beat the crap out of an older Eastland girl, if she chose to.

See how Cindy is holding on "tightly" to Mrs. Garrett? With both hands? Desperately not letting her go? And see how Mrs. Garrett is reaching over, disconnected, to pry the girl's fingers off her arm?* Once I saw that, I knew I had to do something with it, lol.

*(of course Julie Anne is lovingly holding Charlotte, and Charlotte is actually affectionately holding her hand on Cindy's, I was just saying the above way to fit in with the joke, haha).

Rough Housing. Out of the lost girls, Julie Anne is the one I wish they would have kept around. Looking at 'The Little Chill' her character is the only one to have shown character development. Nancy was still the same character all about Roger. Sue Ann was still trying to be the smartest and most achiever of the group. Cindy went from a tom boy like Jo questioning her sexual orientation to a beauty model. That was a dramatic change I wish we could have seen played out. Instead of adding the useless character Kelly in the format change of season 5, I wish they would have brought Cindy back as a main character going to Langley with Jo and Blair.

They definitely could have kept her around or even brought her back. I would definitely have enjoyed seeing her back on the show.

A most excellent point, Christopher. Now that would have been interesting to have seen played out over a number of years. Maybe they would have done it a bit like Carol Seaver on Growing Pains: first she she shows some interest in boys, then she gradually begins to date, then eventually she's invited to the Homecoming Dance as one of the nominees for Homecoming Queen. Eventually, she becomes a model!

Instead of adding the useless character Kelly in the format change of season 5, I wish they would have brought Cindy back as a main character going to Langley with Jo and Blair.

That would have rocked, but I think Julie Anne was playing a bit younger than Lisa or Nancy. Then again, this was a show which didn't show Sue Ann or Nancy graduate with Blair and Jo, so what am I quibbling about?

Seeing Cindy back with "the girls" would have made me feel more like the show was still in its Eastland roots.

That's definitely the age she was playing. She was hanging out with Molly and Natalie, and although she was besties with Sue Ann, she states that Sue Ann is older than her. She certainly didn't look as old as Blair, at least in the 1979-1981 era when we saw her on FOL. But people do change, and by 1983, she might have been able to pass for a college student. She would have been 18 by then, after all.

Nancy O., Sue Ann, and Blair were 15 (though the actresses were 16 during taping), Cindy was 14. Natalie was 13. Molly and Tootie were the preteens of 12.
