View Full Version : Julie Piekarski's best episode?
RetroGuy2000 08-02-2018, 07:12 PM Julie Pie played Sue Ann. She was in quite a few episodes, and was featured prominently in the first season. She also appeared in seasons 2, 3, 5, and 8, as well as Diff'rent Strokes: 19 episodes, in all. What was Julie Pie's best episode?

Hey, I love that picture. Thanks for putting that up. I also see the Linda Ronstadt resemblance. What is with the horse and Prototype Monica? What am I missing here? LOL.
Tumpy was a fun character who had many possibilities. Could they have reformed her and brought her back for an episode or two?
Helen Hunt wasn't given much to do in that episode, she could have also been brought back.
FOL didn't know what they had with those two.
Apropos of nothing...Here is my Kim Fields story.
I was at an autograph signing session in 1985 in Washington D.C. with Kim, Stacy Lattisaw and Todd Bridges after they appeared on a show called Panorama (hosted by Maury Povich!). Stacy and Todd were very friendly when signing their autographs but Kim didn't make any eye contact and just acted like a diva. I think she is the most beautiful of the girls and at the end of the run she was simply stunning. But in real life, I don't know, she comes off as kind of snooty sometimes like when she was dissing Cloris Leachman on The Truth Behind The Sitcoms special. Do you remember that one?
Snooty Tootie.
Having the nerve to make fun of the name "Tumpy"...:wave:

How can one tell who voted for what? I thought that was anonymous. But yea, I should have voted for "Dope" which was a classic.
Kedgie, we hardly knew ye. Played in my mind by Kari Michaelson. :D

Or even not reformed her, but still brought her back. Yes, that would have been interesting.
But in real life, I don't know, she comes off as kind of snooty sometimes like when she was dissing Cloris Leachman on The Truth Behind The Sitcoms special. Do you remember that one?
I remember one where she was talking about the cast expansion in later years, and she said something like, "I was like, do y'all remember when this show started and you got rid of half the cast because there were too many people? What are you doing keeping adding more people??" or something like that.
Snooty Tootie.

Oh, '80s was doing a parody of the Season One opening credits. "Prototype Monica" is his clever name for the blonde Season One Monica before she was replaced by soap opera actress Marj Dusay.
Tumpy was a fun character who had many possibilities. Could they have reformed her and brought her back for an episode or two?
Well, since she was expelled, they would have had to write her back in somehow: such as the decision to expel her was overruled by the Eastland board (maybe because her parents sit on the board, or something). Then she could have re-claimed her New Yorker poster from Blair's wall!
Interestingly, "Tumpy" had already left Happy Days, and soon after she did this episode, she left Hollywood for good.

Thanks so much for sharing your story. I agree that Kim was beautiful (still is). I have sometimes gotten a diva vibe from her, but after reading her book, I kind of see why: her mom really pushed her to develop this attitude that she could do anything.
But being snooty to fans is just unacceptable! Your fans are your paycheck.
I don't remember the Truth Behind the Sitcoms special (just the Dana Plato one); what did Kim say to dis Cloris?
Snooty Tootie.
Having the nerve to make fun of the name "Tumpy"...:wave:
I'm glad Mrs. G makes the comment that someone named Tootie has no right to make fun of the name Tumpy!
Helen Hunt wasn't given much to do in that episode, she could have also been brought back.
It's interesting you mention Helen Hunt in the same post as "snooty Tootie". A few years back, I saw a message board post by an actress who had appeared in an episode of Mad About You. She was scheduled to play a friend of Helen Hunt's sister's character. I forget some of the details, but she said that for some unknown reason (or at least unknown to her), HH got angry at her, and later in the week, she found that her part had been reduced to a much smaller part. She was supposed to be a recurring character, but then her character never appeared again. She didn't even know what she had done wrong, and HH never spoke to her during the whole week.

Now that would be interesting.
She doesn't really look like Tumpy, though. Then again, not all sisters look similar. Some do, some don't. But I always liked Kari on GAB; I was sad when she and Lauri left the show (and it sucked after that).

Was THAT in Truth Behind the Sitcoms?!? I have been looking for that clip for FOREVER!!!!
Now I thought in that clip she was simply talking about all the random cast additions, not specifically about Cloris. And I've got to say, she made a good point, because the writers kept adding in random characters. But I hope she wasn't specifically dissing Cloris. Cloris had a tough job, "replacing" Mrs. G: no one could replace her!
RetroGuy2000 08-03-2018, 01:34 PM I don't like hearing stories like that; I will tell myself that unfortunately, Kim was just having a really, really bad day. :)
It's definitely possible.
I do know that Kim tired of being called "Tootie", and that's why, in the Reunion movie, she is called Dorothy.
Many actors struggle to put their old characters behind them, and it comes out as rude or whatever. Maybe by 1985, Kim was already tiring of the role.
'80sSitcoms 08-03-2018, 01:37 PM Was THAT in Truth Behind the Sitcoms?!? I have been looking for that clip for FOREVER!!!!
It sure is; I wasn't 100% sure, but thanks to the Internet, I found the quote in context (http://www.televisionhits.com/factsoflife/transcripts/tvguide.html) :)
Narrator: To make matters worse the producers and directors decided to add many new cast members.
Kim Fields: I do recall getting really pissed off because they kept adding these people and it was like remember when we started this in ‘79, you had to cut some folks because there were to many people. You can’t do L.A. Law in a half hour, that is why that show is an hour and we are a half hour show.
Narrator: However, there was one cast addition that Kim Fields was completely behind.
Kim Fields: Hey I was easy having George Clooney.
[Showed Clip]
I was mad that they didn’t you know let Tootie and George hook up, but they weren’t doing the interracial thing so I guess I just had to wait on that.
'80sSitcoms 08-03-2018, 01:43 PM Many actors struggle to put their old characters behind them
Nancy McKeon really struggled with that, as was noted here when the Nancy McKeon Brigade was dominating this board "that little while ago" (respecting Christopher's wishes :) ). She really left "Facts" behind, so it's been nice to see her these past several years finally relinquish that distancing, and embrace the role and show that brought her fame and fortune.

Thanks '80s! Although I saw this show when it came out, I couldn't remember which interview Kim's statement had come from. I thought for sure it must have been the E! True Hollywood Story (which had come out around the same time), but when I recently watched that episode, Kim's comment about the foolishness of expanding the cast wasn't in there, and I began to think I had somehow imagined it.
So thanks to both Anna and '80s!
Now if only I had the video clip itself...
This is also the interview that caused a rift between Geri and Charlotte.

I agree. Getting a few interviews where she talked about the show was pretty amazing. I loved the fact that she even acknowledged the Lost Girls.

I didn't have the E! True Hollywood Story episode for years and years, but I have it now. I had taped it back in 1999, but due to my own stupidity, I accidentally recorded over it. I don't have some others, including the Truth Behind episode. But I LOVED what Kim said in Truth Behind, and have remembered it all these years, since it was very Lost Girls-supportive.

Is it though? When she says "You had to cut some folks 'cause there were too many people!", it sounds like she's with the concensus that there were too many people, and they hired too many girls to begin with. Kind of a "You did this mistake the first time!" kind of thing.

Well, her just pointing out the hypocrisy of firing people because there were "too many" and then hiring a bunch more people was very refreshing.
Ahh...well, they reunited on Hallmark, so that's nice. :)
They did, and also on the TV Land Awards, so it's clearly behind them. But according to Geri, there was a rift for a while, in part because the producers of "The Truth Behind..." edited her comments about Charlotte, or took pieces slightly out of context. That resulted in this awkward piece (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=MsKZ229Gil4).

True, though if you're objective, you can kind of understand where the producers were coming from: "We've gotten to know these 4 girls over 5 years, let's introduce some new characters to interact with them and mix things up."
Only, unfortunately, most of those new characters weren't on par with the girls.

But they could have easily brought back Julie Anne as Cindy, in Season Five, instead of irritating everyone with Kelly Affinado.
Only, unfortunately, most of those new characters weren't on par with the girls.
I'll say! Kevin, who lasted all of five episodes; Kelly, who had no redeeming qualities; Casey; Rick; Pippa...

That's true: she and Emily could have been quite the antagonists. But Warren Littlefield thought there were "too many girls". Margo's sole appearance would have to do.
I could see Kim Fields as being a good director. She is extremely opinionated and probably gets a kick out of calling the shots.
She did direct one episode of Living Single, so I think you are exactly right about Kim liking to call the shots.
Lisa Whelchel was the only one who could carry a tune. SHE should have been Nellie Forbush! Tootie was tone deaf perhaps from that dreaded inner ear infection. ;)

RetroGuy2000 08-04-2018, 06:56 AM Hey! This topic is about Sue Ann! I will not stand for any non Sue Ann related discussion, she deserves full undivided attention! ;)
She definitely does! Sometimes, we get off on a tangent, but Sue Ann deserves our full attention here.
In all seriousness Sue Ann was and always will be my fav. The first ep of FOL I ever saw was IQ and I fell in love with her. She's prominent in so many eps but I tried sticking with ones she was more involved with.
"IQ" has some great moments! That episode is just fun, with the younger girls (Tootie, Natalie, Molly) getting some great comic moments, mostly at the expense of "dumb" Sue Ann. The girls are soooo young, here! Oddly, viewers can even see the physical differences between the girls in this episode and how they would appear just a few months later, when the "back nine" episodes were taped. Those kids were growing quickly!
"IQ" is the last of the first four episodes before the show went back on hiatus and was retooled. I think the direction in this episode was lacking, and it shows. John Bowab wasn't directing the show, yet, and they were using temporary directors.
The other episodes you picked -- "Dieting", "The Facts of Love", "Running", "Dope", and "The Little Chill" -- all have a lot of classic Sue Ann. They really used Julie heavily throughout the first season, and it was a huge surprise when Dope turned out to be her last major episode for the next seven years!
One of the things I liked about Sue Ann was that her insecurities were shown throughout the season. She's very smart, but a little neurotic: whether she's worried about her weight or the track meet, other characters (like Blair and Mr. Bradley) play her like a fiddle. I don't know that we've seen that done to other characters in other seasons. In "Running", Mr. Bradley plays on Sue Ann's insecurities to get her to compete against Cindy. In "Dieting", Sue Ann lets Blair's cruel comments about her weight get to her. In "Dope", Tumpy is able to get Sue Ann to risk her academic career at Eastland with just a little peer pressure.
"The Little Chill" might be Julie's finest moment on television. She's still playing an insecure Sue Ann: one who can't admit she's not exactly hugely successful, yet. This episode wasn't just a tribute to the Lost Girls, it was a continuation of their story, and we see that particularly with Sue Ann.
'80sSitcoms 08-04-2018, 11:12 AM Mrs. Garrett should have gotten the part, as Anna says: Charlotte had released an album in the 1950s.

Why is that "odd"?? They were human girls! They grow when you don't see them!

I wonder how SHOCKED that girl was when she was told she was cut from the show---not only that, but the 2nd one cut! She was one of THE top main characters. It must have been a huge stun! It's very surprising, then, that she agreed to come on board as an "extra" for a few episodes over the next couple of years. Very surprising, considering what the show did to her.
RetroGuy2000 08-04-2018, 11:50 AM This was only for the girls though, and if you had to choose between them, Natalie wasn't as bad as Tootie was.

Not surprising that they grew, silly! It's surprising that you can see they've grown in just a matter of months; surprising that it's so obvious to the viewer.

Julie said in the EW oral history interview (http://web.archive.org/web/20170708130557/http://microsites.ew.com/microsite/longform/facts/) that she was pretty surprised, which... of course you would be surprised when you're one of the top girls in every episode. But she's also always said that that is how show-business works. She recently repeated this in last year's Fox interview (https://fox2now.com/2017/04/25/no-longer-famous-child-star-talks-struggles-and-the-spotlight/): one minute you're in, the next you're out.
Julie's always had a good attitude about the entertainment industry.
Although I wouldn't call the small parts "extras": they were guest stars, and received billing as such. The parts were usually not huge, but extras have no lines (other than crowd-talk), and day players just a couple. "Jenny" (Dawn) was likely a day player, with two lines; "Nina" (in the first episode) was an extra: no lines, just walk out the door. Felice, Molly, and the Julies, even with their usually small parts in seasons 2 and 3, were principals: they got screen credit (and nice ones at that).
But the "demoted to extra (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DemotedToExtra)" has been used to refer to their Fall 1980-1982 roles on FOL.
'80sSitcoms 08-04-2018, 12:37 PM Not surprising that they grew, silly! It's surprising that you can see they've grown in just a matter of months; surprising that it's so obvious to the viewer.
I still don't know why you find this odd. Children grow! Of course you would see a difference in a matter of months. ;)
Although I wouldn't call the small parts "extras": they were guest stars, and received billing as such.
That was nice they were still credited as their characters.
Right, they were reduced to day players if you want to be technical. You will notice I used quotes when I said "extra", where I was merely emphasizing how small her appearances were after season 1, and how in comparison it was almost basically what she became, not claiming that was what her role was called.
But the "demoted to extra (https://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/DemotedToExtra)" has been used to refer to their Fall 1980-1982 roles on FOL.
And it's no wonder...only a few lines, and usually with nothing to delineate their characters; such a waste. Love seeing them, but they did get mostly bland generalized dialogue. This has been pointed out here (not by me) a long time ag- er, make that, "recently", in case our Christopher is reading this. Hi Christopher!

Oh, no, I figured since you had used the word "extra" in quotes, you were emphasizing how small the role had become, rather than saying what their roles were officially titled.
They also weren't day players: day players only appear for a day, and aren't brought in for rehearsals. But it would have been very difficult, or even impossible, to rehearse the scenes the Lost Girls appear in without the Lost Girls actually being there. The scene in "Front Page", for example, without the Julies, would have been missing about a third of its dialogue, which is not a thorough rehearsal.
And it's no wonder...only a few lines, and usually with nothing to delineate their characters; such a waste. Love seeing them, but they did get mostly bland generalized dialogue.
Not Nancy in "Gossip", or Molly in "The New Girl 2", and not the parts in "The Little Chill", but the other scripts, yes.

Well, you knew my gist, lol.
Not Nancy in "Gossip", or Molly in "The New Girl 2", and not the parts in "The Little Chill", but the other scripts, yes.
Nancy and Molly don't count. I'm strictly speaking of the Julies. And TLC doesn't count either, since they were actually written in character for that episode! lol (and had actual parts, haha)

Yes, we're on the same page (The front one ;) ).
You've mentioned this before, and I agree: if they had only mentioned the Julies by name, or had scripted their dialog in any way to identify their characters ("You're not the only one! Sometimes Mr. Gideon makes me so mad I have to jump rope!", or "Mr. Gideon, I plan to do a story for The Eastlander on divorce rates in Kansas City compared to New York."), it would have brought more to those parts.
Still, I'm grateful we got to see the Lost Girls at all after the first season, and in eleven episodes, no less (including the flashback episodes). Still, I wish there were more!
'80sSitcoms 08-04-2018, 02:13 PM Hear, hear!
One thing we can claim as part of Cindy's character in "Gossip", if we want to, is that Cindy has a weakness for gossip. She and/or Sue Ann (but presumably both) spread the gossip about Mrs. Garrett, and in season 1's "I.Q.", as soon as Tootie says "I've got a secret that nobody's supposed to know!", Cindy is the first one intrigued by it, piping up eagerly with, "What is it, Tootie?". So we can use that to say that Cindy was in character in "Gossip", but still, we'd like more, lol.

That's a good point, '80s. Similarly, Sue Ann lectures Natalie and Tootie on eavesdropping, and then says "But as long as you were [there], what else did they say?!" It seems she's got a weakness for gossip, too.

The Little Chill, because it showed a mature and determined Sue Ann. As an aside, I lived
in the St. Louis Area(where Julie is from and still lives) from September 1995-September
2006 and I wished I could have gotten in contact with her. I called her husband's(dentist
John Probst) number a couple of times and left a message, but she never called me back.

I suppose her husband's office is not the best way to reach her.
But I know she absolutely loves St. Louis, and is proud of the St. Louis area. She even brought a bit of the Midwest with her, in the role of Sue Ann.
Sue Ann definitely seemed to be determined to work her way up the ladder. I LOVED her part in The Little Chill; I only wish that episode had been, like, a three-parter. Still, what we got was amazing.

For someone who wondered for years why half the cast members were suddenly, inexplicably, cruelly gone (me), this was long-awaited closure. We FINALLY got answers. We FINALLY got acknowledgement. We FINALLY got revenge... er, I mean, a wrap-up to the Lost Girls' story.
It would have been better with Molly, too, but I'm sure that was her decision, and I have to respect that. If she had done the episode, I bet it would have been a two-parter. Molly Ringwald would have been a huge audience draw in that era.
For me, it is the best episode of the later seasons. It is not without flaws, but I love it. LOVE. IT.

Well, you didn't get answers, at least not to questions like, "Why were you gone?? Where did you go??" But I'm glad it gave you closure when it came along!

That would have been awesome, indeed. You know what else would have made it even better? If Cindy were there!
Yeah, yeah, Cindy was "there", but only in a minor supporting role next to Nancy and especially Sue Ann. Cindy was my #1 girl from season 1, and those of us who held her in high esteem over all 6 other girls that year got shafted with her minimal role in this reunion. [sigh]...
For me, it is the best episode of the later seasons. It is not without flaws, but I love it. LOVE. IT.
Well I'm glad you and other LC fans really get out of what you do. :) For me, it's kind of a case of "too little, too late". Like on Mr. Belvedere when Wesley finally gets a dog after years of wanting one. But by this time, he's a little older, and he says to the dog, "Where were you when I really wanted you?" That's how I feel---I was craving Lost Girls in the cafeteria years because of the little cameos we got from (most) of them, but by the time they finally brought them on for a meaty episode it's all so different. No cafeteria, and most disappointingly, no Mrs. Garrett. :( To me it's a shell of what it could have been without Mrs. Garrett seeing "her girls" again.

I totally see what you're saying, and you make good points, but this was in an era where Facts scripts suffered badly. The writers had changed, and the show was now about random characters being added every six months, and then gone six months later; a show with Twilight Zone parodies, It's a Wonderful Life parodies, 1960s music fad episodes, Night Court tie-in episodes, drive-in nostalgia, mullets, etc. To get a throwback to the first season, with long-beloved-but-missing characters... and featuring them, rather than just appearing as background characters at the back of a cafeteria... For me, it is most excellent closure.

I think she was believable as a senior. I'm always surprised by the men they cast as "boys" being boyfriends with the girls. All the ones I've investigated on IMDB were at least 25, which is crazy. Nancy McKeon was 14 when she was paired up with "Eddie", who was... 25! He was almost twice her age.

Yes, but like you said regarding Hilary, the "men" were often totally believable as "boys". I never thought of season 1's Steve or Jason being over 20, but assuming they were teenage boys. As for Eddie he did seem a little older, but I never pictured "25"! lol

In the Season 2 "Who Am I", Mrs. Garrett somehow thought it was a good idea to leave smitten Tootie all alone with that vending machine guy Fred. While I can't find when the actor who played Fred was born, you just don't leave a 11 or 12 year old girl all alone with some random stranger stocking vending machines. The fact that he is stocking vending machines says that he is at least 18 years old.

I don't think that was the case in the late 1970s/early 1980s. Labor laws were very different, as you probably remember. In those days, many kids did adult work. And in those days, many vending machines sold cigarettes, which is rare to see today (I still see them in Nevada, when I visit Vegas, but that's it, because Nevada is crazy).
Also, I don't think an 18-year-old would be asking a 12-year-old out to dance, nor do I think the show would promote that. Erik Moses, who played Fred, also played Willis' friend on DS.

Yes, i remember him: he was one of WILLIS friends from the Bronx on 'DIFFERENT STROKES'.

Hi Retro
Do you know what's bothering me right now: i finished watching my whole FOL season 6 DVD set, but i was wanting to start watching season 7 (online cos i don't want to buy the DVD set) but they don't have the first episode!
It bugs me, cos 'Out of the fire is actually the only good episode: it still shows you some of 'Edna's Edibles' right after the fire, (when the girls are back from their summer trip) and before the revamp of 'Over our heads', and all the 'nonsense/ useless' characters that come in the scene such as GEORGE CLOONEY and ANDY.....
Any clues where i can watch it other than YouTube?

Wait... What streaming service has missing episodes?!

Funny when the burned-out husk of Edna's Edibles is still better than Over Our Heads.

I know what you mean.

Daily Motion also has FOL videos.

'Daily motion'? I'll give it a try if i can find it, thanks!
PS: it was actually YouTube who cut the first episode (doesn't make any sense to me lol) and to anyone who's seen FOL, it be a little confusing watching 'Over our heads' with new characters added overnight (for instance GEORGE) without viewing how the fire got started in the first place.....
'80sSitcoms 03-09-2020, 10:48 AM Things that are harder to find at YouTube can be found easier at DailyMotion.
"Running" used to be at YT, but is gone. Then I turned to DM for it when I needed screencaps for my screencaps threads. I used DM for nearly all of my episode screencaps for those threads (the threads discussing props/sets/decor).
