No Current Plans for Connie Britton to Return to "9-1-1"
by Michael Ausiello
August 2, 2018

The 9-1-1 crew will have to make due without their trusty call-center maestro Abby Clark. At the Television Critics Assoc. summer press tour on Thursday, Fox co-chairman Gary Newman confirmed that there are no current plans for Connie Britton to return in Season 2.

“We love Connie Britton, but it was always envisioned to be a one-year role,” Newman told reporters. “So it wasn’t a surprise that she left. If Connie expressed interest and had time in the future, I know [exec producer] Ryan [Murphy] would be thrilled to bring her back to the show.”

Britton has since signed on to star opposite Eric Bana in the Bravo true-crime anthology "Dirty John".

I hate that! I really enjoyed seeing her character on the show and watching her reaction to the calls. I liked the way they had dispatch's view, as well as the first responders. I even enjoyed seeing her with Buck.

by Michael Ausiello

TVLine has confirmed that Connie Britton is in talks to reprise her role as former 9-1-1 operator extraordinaire Abby later this season for multiple episodes.

Britton exited "9-1-1" the end of the series’ breakout freshman season, at which point it was revealed that her contract with the show was only for one season. However, at the time, exec producer Ryan Murphy remained optimistic that she might return on a guest-star basis.

Connie Britton is returning to 9-1-1 because her character has "unfinished business" (https://tvline.com/2020/01/21/911-connie-britton-return-explained-buck-reunion/)

Co-creator Tim Minear tells TVLine that Britton's “Abby promised she would come back and she never did. So there’s unfinished business for Abby, and definitely also for Buck. He’s kind of lost at sea right now. He’s still trying to figure out who he is, and his relationship with Abby started to redefine him. Once she left, he had to figure out who he was without her.” ALSO: 9-1-1: Lone Star doubles down on 9-1-1's tragedy porn with Rob Lowe playing "Firefighter Rob Lowe." 9-1-1 boss talks bringing Connie Britton back and tackling coronavirus next season (https://www.hollywoodreporter.com/live-feed/911-season-3-finale-explained-tim-minear-interview-1294255)

With Angela Bassett's help, showrunner and co-creator Tim Minear says he pitched Britton on returning to the Fox drama at the 100th episode party for American Horror Story. "It couldn't have been more simple. Somebody pitched, 'What if the penultimate episode leading into the finale was, for instance, a train derailment?' That was literally the pitch," he said. "And what if Maddie got a phone call from the crash site and the person on the other end seemed to know a lot about what they were calling about? It turned out to be Abby, who was on her way back from Phoenix. So the idea that was pitched was the thing we did." Minear added that it would be hard to ignore the coronavirus crisis as a first responder show, "but on the other hand we do not want the show to become subsumed in it."
