Greg Berlanti's "You" Scores Early Renewal at Lifetime
by Lesley Goldberg
July 26, 2018

Lifetime is showing faith in "You". The female-focused cable network has handed out an early season two renewal for Greg Berlanti-produced scripted drama "You", starring Penn Badgley.

The go-ahead comes six weeks ahead of its official Sept. 9 series debut on the A+E Networks-owned cabler.

Picked up to series in April 2017, the thriller is based on Caroline Kepnes' best-selling novel of the same name. "You" is described as a 21st century love story about an obsessive yet brilliant 20-something named Joe (Badgley), who uses the hyper-connectivity of today's technology to make the woman of his dreams (Elizabeth Lail) fall for him.

Season two will follow Joe as his search for love takes him to Hollywood, where dreams can be made or shattered. Kepnes' follow-up novel, Hidden Bodies, will be the focus of the sophomore run.

Production on season two is expected to begin in Los Angeles this year. The renewal was spurred by the June news of "You" receiving funding from the California Film Commission.

Shay Mitchell, Luca Padovan and Zach Cherry co-star.

"You" Moves to Netflix for Season 2 as Lifetime Shifts Focus to Original Movies
by Nellie Andreeva
December 3, 2018

Lifetime’s drama "You" is moving to Netflix for its upcoming second season. The streaming giant already had international distribution for the Berlanti Prods. psychological thriller, whose first season will air as a Netflix original outside of the U.S..

It launches Dec. 26. Starting with Season 2, "You" will be a Netflix global original.

Lifetime renewed "You", starring Penn Badgley and Elizabeth Lail, for a second season in July, ahead of the series’ September premiere. At the time, Netflix already had been on board as an international partner, and I hear the early renewal was done with a move to the Internet network as a possible option.

"You", developed by Sera Gamble and Greg Berlanti based on the book by Caroline Kepnes, garnered strong reviews but couldn’t attract wide linear audience on Lifetime. Meanwhile, its heavily serialized nature makes it very suitable for binging on a streaming platform.

That also was the case with another praised serialized Lifetime series, "UnREAL", which also couldn’t attract large enough viewership on the cable network and made the transition to an SVOD platform, Hulu, for its fourth and final season.

November 11, 2019

Netflix has an after-Christmas present for fans of the Penn Badgley drama "You". Season 2 of the former Lifetime series will premiere on December 26, exclusively on the streaming service.

The show’s sophomore run is based loosely on the author’s second book in the series, titled Hidden Bodies, and will stream under the Netflix Originals banner. It will follow Goldberg to Los Angeles, where he meets Love Quinn (Victoria Pedretti), an aspiring chef that isn’t into social media like his previous leading lady.

Seems love turned out to be no better than Joe. Can't wait to see Shalita Grant on season 3.
