View Full Version : Why Batwoman is perfect for The CW's Arrowverse
http://collider.com/batwoman-tv-show-arrowverse/#comics
The Kate Kane character brings more of a supernatural element "rather than the street-level fights that we’ve seen so much of on the CW," says Evan Valentine. "Batwoman fights werewolves, vampires, and other kooky supernatural threats on the regular, spawning from the 'Religion of Crime' and all the strange, darker sides of Gotham. With her military training, and her father still watching her back and mentoring her, there’s a lot there to explore in a new series."

JamesG 08-07-2018, 01:51 PM Ruby Rose Cast as Batwoman in The CW’s DC Crossover & Potential Series
by Nellie Andreeva
August 7, 2018
In one of the biggest casting coups for The CW, Ruby Rose has been tapped to play Batwoman.
The character will make her first appearance as part of The CW’s annual DC Arrowverse crossover event in December, which will include "Arrow", "The Flash", and "Supergirl" (but not "DC’s Legends of Tomorrow").
Rose is also set to play the role in the "Batwoman" series The CW has in development for next season. While the project is still in the script stage, with a star of Rose’s caliber attached and DC Universe architect Greg Berlanti behind it, it is likely to go to pilot and series.
(I hear The CW is not planning to use the crossover as a backdoor pilot for "Batwoman" but instead film a full-length pilot as it did with flagship "The Flash".)
“Armed with a passion for social justice and a flair for speaking her mind, Kate Kane soars onto the streets of Gotham as Batwoman, an out lesbian and highly trained street fighter primed to snuff out the failing city’s criminal resurgence,” reads the official logline.
“But don’t call her a hero yet. In a city desperate for a savior, Kate must overcome her own demons before embracing the call to be Gotham’s symbol of hope.”
If the project goes to series, Batwoman will become the first gay lead character — male or female — of a live-action superhero series.
Batwoman already has been a trailblazer for LGBTQ+ representation in comics. After a long hiatus, she was reintroduced to the DC comic universe in 2006 when she was established as a Jewish lesbian, becoming the first-ever lesbian superhero title DC character.
The prospective "Batwoman" series will be written by Caroline Dries (The Vampire Diaries), who is also executive producing alongside Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Geoff Johns.

JamesG 08-13-2018, 12:29 PM Ruby Rose Leaves Twitter in Wake of Batwoman Backlash
by Dino-Ray Ramos
August 12, 2018
As Hollywood takes the baby steps to become more inclusive for all races, genders, sexual orientations, and anyone else that has been “othered”, there are bound to be speed bumps along the way.
As actress Ruby Rose celebrated her new gig as Batwoman Kate Kane for The CW, people saw this as a great moment as Rose would play the first gay superhero to lead a TV series. This, of course, came with social media backlash which resulted in Rose leaving Twitter.
Rose took to Twitter one last time before exiting saying in a string of tweets:
“Where on earth did ‘Ruby is not a lesbian therefore she can’t be batwoman’ come from — has to be the funniest most ridiculous thing I’ve ever read. I came out at 12? And have for the past 5 years had to deal with ‘she’s too gay’ how do y’all flip it like that? I didn’t change. I wish we would all support each other and our journeys.”
She continued, “When women and when minorities join forces we are unstoppable… when we tear each other down it’s much more hurtful than from any group. But hey/ love a challenge I just wish women and the LGBT community supported each other more.
My wish was we were all a little kinder and more supportive of each other…Sending everyone my love and gratitude, it’s been a rollercoaster of a year, this month especially.”
Rose punctuated her statement with confidence saying, “I am looking forward to getting more than 4 hours of sleep and to break from Twitter to focus all my energy on my next 2 projects. If you need me, I’ll be on my Bat Phone.”

Ruby Rose is the victim of a "left-wing harassment campaign" over her Batwoman casting (https://www.thedailybeast.com/inside-the-left-wing-harassment-campaign-against-ruby-roses-lesbian-batwoman)
"Shockingly, the predictable backlash to Ruby Rose’s recently announced casting appears to actually be coming from inside the house—from fans who seem to love the idea of an out actress playing Kate Kane, but want more from their trailblazing lesbian superhero," explains Amy Zimmerman of the casting the lesbian Rose in the The CW role. She adds: "Recurring sentiments appear to be that Batwoman should be played by a Jewish lesbian, and that the role would have been a great opportunity to elevate new talent. Sample tweets include, 'Ruby is great... But she is not the only queer actress out there' and 'JEWISH LESBIAN CHARACTER SHOULD BE PLAYED BY A JEWISH LESBIAN." Zimmerman points out that users of the #RecastBatwoman hashtag on Twitter have rallied around another actress, Ashley Platz, whose Batwoman audition tape has been widely circulated.
JamesG 10-08-2018, 12:25 PM Greg Berlanti Addresses Lesbian Batwoman Controversy: "Ruby Is Terrific in the Role"
by Chris Gardner
Oct. 8, 2018
Superproducer and filmmaker Greg Berlanti and his husband, soccer star turned producer Robbie Rogers, shared a stage (for the first time in their relationship) on Sept. 22 during the L.A. LGBT Center Vanguard Awards.
It was Rogers, 31, who offered insight into the battles Berlanti, 46, has faced over the years with network bosses as he’s tweaked comic book characters to present more diverse worlds on the small screen courtesy of LGBTQ storylines on shows like "Arrow" and "Black Lightning".
“Greg would say, ‘What good are those heroes if they don’t look like the world they’re saving?’" Rogers explained from the podium.
Earlier, on the red carpet, Berlanti addressed the swirl around his latest casting of Ruby Rose as a lesbian Batwoman, which is being billed as the first openly gay superhero to lead a TV show.
The openly gay actress-model-DJ encountered harsh critics online, which led her to quit Twitter, but Berlanti seemed unfazed. “Whenever you’re bringing change about in any form, there are always conversations that happen. I go all the way back to Dawson’s Creek,” he told THR, referencing the teen drama for which he served as showrunner when the WB series featured a gay kiss between two male stars.
“Twitter didn’t exist, but we would get boxes of letters expressing opinions in all directions from were we making enough change, should we be making more change, or why did we feel like we needed to do these things? It’s always part of the process, so just focus on the story and make the best episode that you can.”
Berlanti was quick to point out that "Batwoman" is still in the pilot stage, but he did tease that, “Ruby is terrific in the role, and we’re excited for people to see the story.”
Rose will debut in the role in The CW’s upcoming crossover event this December.

JamesG 01-03-2019, 05:04 PM Ruby Rose's "Batwoman" Gets Pilot Pickup at The CW; David Nutter to Direct
by Nellie Andreeva
January 3, 2019
The CW has given a pilot order to "Batwoman", its groundbreaking DC drama project starring Ruby Rose. David Nutter (Game of Thrones, Arrow, The Flash) has been tapped to direct the pilot in consideration for next season.
Based on its name recognition and pedigree, the project from Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions, Warner Bros. Television and writer Caroline Dries emerged as an early standout immediately after The CW unveiled its development on the heels of announcing the Batwoman character’s appearance in the annual Arrow-verse crossover at the May upfronts.
The project’s profile got even bigger once "Orange Is the New Black‘s" Ruby Rose was cast as Batwoman this past summer.

JamesG 02-08-2019, 12:12 AM "Batwoman" Finds its Villain: Rachel Skarsten To Star in The CW’s DC Pilot
by Nellie Andreeva
February 7, 2019
Rachel Skarsten has been cast as a villainous lead opposite Ruby Rose in "Batwoman", The CW’s groundbreaking drama pilot from Greg Berlanti’s Berlanti Productions and Warner Bros Television.
Skarsten will play Alice. If Batwoman had a Joker, it would be Alice, the leader of her Lewis Carroll–inspired Wonderland Gang. Swinging unpredictably between maniacal and charming, Alice has made it her mission to undermine Gotham’s sense of security.
This marks a return to DC/WBTV for Skarsten — one of her first major roles was a lead, Dinah Lance, on the 2002 series "Birds of Prey", which aired on The CW predecessor the WB.
On The CW, she played Queen Elizabeth on "Reign".
